Things I learned from my father. (And my thoughts). 1. George was worse than Maria. (Maria followed the debt crisis, la junta, promesa & Irma). 2. Albizu Campos didn’t DO anything. (He has and continues to impact change and change makers). 3. “They” will always win. (“We” will ALWAYS resist. We won’t go down without a fight). In preparation for tomorrow, today has already been particularly internally tumultuous. Reminders: 1. Our tragedy, trauma, triumphs and healing belong to us and do not require validation by being measured or compared to others. 2. When the work you do comes from a place of love for el pueblo it speaks for itself, never let others influence you into doubting your authenticity. 3. Just gonna leave this here. A year later and people on the island are still trying to recover. Agent orange said P.R. Was a big success and it was for those who seek to privatize and gentrify the island. People are dying from lack of resources and yet all the higher powers Can think of is how cheap they will get the land and how big their profits will be. To all those looking to profit from the disaster on my beautiful island: Me cago en la madre que los pario!! #quevivapuertoricolibre #4645 #fuckdisastercapitalism

By @nuestra_patriapr Trauma is instantly tearing up realizing a year has almost passed since Hurricane Irma hit the archipelago of Puerto Rico battering Culebra and Vieques! Hurricane Irma opened the floodgates to the negligence and devastation which has caused an undetermined number of deaths (over 4,000) and the displacement of thousands of Boricuas. Today we find ourselves in a crisis, we find our nation and people under full attack from both the US and PR governments, everything from our nations education system to the future status of our nation is at jeopardy. We find ourselves powerless and voiceless in a time where we are screaming the loudest and no amount of “political representation” will change that. We are colonial subjects, subjected to the tyranny and repression of 2 governments who’s end game is to rid our nation of its identity and people. We are a people fighting while being attacked from every possible angle while trying our hardest to continue resisting! Somos una nación en pie de lucha, even if we don’t see justice or freedom we will always stand and fight for our dignity even if it’s only the few we will stand! QUE VIVA PUERTO RICO Y LXS QUE LUCHAN POR ELLA Y QUE VIVA LA LIBERTAD DE NUESTRA MATRIA! #HurricaneIrma #HurricaneMaria #PuertoRico #OneYearLater #Boricua #EnPieDeLucha #QueVivaPuertoRicoLibre

I’ve arrived in Puerto Rico con @descolonizapr y @laura_rodz - pa’ tres semana. The island has changed and so have I. All of the stress of getting here manifested in my connecting flight because as a dear friend said, “They knew it couldn’t get to me once I landed.” Traveling can be exhausting. It will take 10 years for the crops to grow back in Puerto Rico. What will I grow in 10 years? Today marks 9months since Hurricane Maria. Can you believe it's already been 9months? There are still thousands with blue tarp on their roofs? A "temporary" fix back in October. Her dad's name is Robert. Say his name🙏🏽 Here she is telling me how her dad suffered a stroke due to the trauma he experienced in the aftermath of hurricane Maria. He was desperately waiting for FEMA assistance that he applied for back in October that never arrived. She had just returned from visiting him in the hospital. During this clip you can hear her optimism, her pride, and pain all mixed together. She says "En Pie De Lucha" which means "Ready To Fight" She reported that he was recovering and couldn't wait to return to his land so that he can start figuring out ways on how to rebuild. He even asked her "did they start putting up the cement blocks yet" This was 6months after the hurricane. They had no electricity and FEMA still hadn't come through with any plan to help him or his neighbors rebuild. His house was completely destroyed. A house that the barrio leader Palo explained was one of the standouts in the community. He was proud of the work he put into building that house. The entire community was in love with that house. Built from scratch with his own sweat and money he saved up. It was known as "El Chalet De Robert" A chalet is a house built on its own land. When we returned a month later to check up on this community we found out that Robert never fully recovered and had passed away. This is the brief story of just one of the 4,645 confirmed deaths due to hurricane Maria and the lack of aid given to the people in Puerto Rico. The hurricane has exposed a deeper plot to uproot the people of Puerto Rico. We are learning about ridiculous laws, taxes, and austerity measures that have crippled the economy since before the hurricane and most recently the Harvard study that has confirmed 4,645 deaths which Trumps their original claim of 64 deaths due to the hurricane. Friday 6/22 there's a vigil for PR in LES by @Viajero ⬅️ #FreePuertoRico #EndColonialism #QueVivaPuertoRicoLibre #4645 #HumanRights #Inhumane #RIP #StepUp4PR #KeepTheConversationGoing #WhatAreYouFightingFor #Overthrow

Preciosa seras sin bandera, sin lauros, ni gloria. Preciosa, preciosa te llaman los hijos de la libertad 🇵🇷🎵🇵🇷🎵🇵🇷 they will never break our spirit ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 today we celebrate our culture with a parade because 61 years ago our flag was illegal, even back home. Thousands of Puerto Ricans including children were sentenced to prison because Law 53 (aka the Gag Law) made it a felony to display our flag, sing the anthem or speak a word towards our independence. The very first PR Day Parade was held in 1958, following the repeal of this unconstitutional law. Our struggle as a people is not over and I'm moved to see so many Boricuas around the world coming together on this day. Whatever your political stance is, we can all agree our island and our people deserve better and we'll continue to fight for that change #borinquen #puertorico #preciosa #quebonitabandera #neverforget #despiertaboricua #4645 #quevivapuertoricolibre #laborinquena#lolarodriguezdetio

I've said before that El Salvador and Greece is the blood that runs through my veins but Puerto Rico is the heart that pumps it. It's native inhabitants, The Tainos, called the island, Boriken or Borinquen which means: "The land of the valiant and noble Lords". Today, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Marches along 5th Avenue. As the flags wave, people dance in the streets while the music plays, and scream, "Weeepaaaaa! Que viva Puerto Rico!!", studies indicate that the Puerto Rico death toll associated with Hurricane Maria is at least 4,654, over 70 times the original official count of 64. The Puerto Rico Department of Health raised its own estimate by at least 1,400. Right now, over 10,000 families on the island are still without power and in need of food, clean water, resources, supplies, and adequate medical care. I pray today's march be a show of solidarity in a move toward an indepenent Puerto Rico and big FUCK YOU to the Trump administration!! Que viva Puerto Rico Libre! #QueVivaPuertoRicoLibre #PuertoRico #PuertoRicanParade #PuertoRicanPride #NationalPuertoRicanDayParade #FuckTrump #SimplyRob
