Day 4: arrival at Machu Picchu in the clouds. This day started at 3am and we had to go and wait at the check point in the rain until it opened at 5:30am. I played categories with Nick a guy in our group, we did countries and capitals then went on to types of biscuit. It was an odd odd time and the efficiency of this system could be massively improved, but anyway. We hiked through the dark in a line of head torches, except of course mine and Natalie’s had run out of batteries so we had to buddy up with Denisse and Nick to give us light. It felt amazing in the cold and rain and cliff side darkness there was something really magical about our arrival, everyone had gotten to know everyone in the last few days, no one could over take coz it was too dangerous so there was a real sense of team spirit, especially within our group of 4 we all took it in turns to hold each other’s poles so we could keep walking but take layers off as we got hotter etc. We arrived with some disappointment to clouds and my glasses were steamed up so I couldn’t see anything. I just gave up on protecting myself from the rain and accepted the soggy fait. It was amazing when we got there to see this amazing wonder of the world I had been dreaming about this moment since I was 14 and it didn’t look anything like this but in a way it was better, there was so much good vibes and banter with all these people it was amazing. And you can impress people who got the train up and look clean by looking really gross and smelling really bad and having walked 4 days to arrive there, I felt so proud of the team and like we had really got a right to be there that day. And in the end don’t forget to stamp your passport, or your hand in my case!
