UK based @elephant_tree_band‘s sophomoric self-titled album ‘Elephant Tree’, released on @magneticeyerecords in early 2016, is one of those albums that you can put on loop and listen through multiple times without wanting to skip any songs. This is that lazy lounger or long car drive album that has that easily addictive ear worm property. I catch myself constantly revisiting this album. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some songs I like over the others that I will specifically go out of my way to listen to but when I have the time it’s an all or nothing venture. I get a serious case of frisson from ‘Aphotic Blues’. That transition around 2:40 hits you like a ton of bricks with this thick trudging riff and wide open vocals. The whole album is just beautifully composed. A fantastic blend of doom and grunge with hints of psychedelia create a dreamy trance like soundscape. ‘Circles’ clocks in in at 3:10, the shortest song aside from the intro ‘Spores’, but it slowly washes over you with bluesy guitar and vocals while a wall of sound slowly builds in the background. A true showcase of the amazing songwriting, vocal variety, and their emotional presence in the album. This song really exemplifies the breadth of the album and the bands ability to step away from the typical. ‘Echoes’ is just, well, another fantastic song on an album of great songs and also one I find myself gravitating to often.
Do what’s right and support this release. They’ve got a fair amount of pressings on their bandcamp and in Magnetic Eye’s store. I have a second pressing edition of 125 but I’ll probably buy more versions down the line. Maybe a first issue.
I highly recommend checking out this album.
