💧Pozzo Sacro di Santa Cristina, Paulilatino, Sardinia ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2018. All Rights Reserved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Part 3 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The walls of the sacred well of Santa Cristina, along with the stairway and underground tholos are all made from finely cut ashlar basalt blocks. The isodomic chamber replicates the tholos shape which is a characteristic of thousands of nuraghi, but it is executed here with a symmetry so profoundly different from those rough-blocked structures that at first sight it is does not seem to belong to the Nuragic civilisation at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The well is preceded by a vestibule where cult ceremonies probably took place. Then follows a steep underground stairway in a trapezoidal space which narrows downwards as it approaches the circular chamber containing the water. The staircase is spectacularly “mirrored” by the roof lintels, which are made up of uniform blocks of constant width, creating an extraordinary "inverted scale" effect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The tholos (pseudocupola) is an ogival vault almost 7 m high, also made with basalt blocks finely cut and arranged in neat regular rows. Their diameter, from the lintel of the entrance door, positioned above the end of the staircase, decreases with each row to create a hole of about 35 cm at ground level. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The entire structure of the sacred well is made with very accurate techniques; all the basalt blocks of medium size (about 60 cm long by 30 cm thick) were worked and finished then arranged in horizontal rows taking care that the lower block protrudes about one centimeter from the upper block in order to create an extremely subtle jagged profile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ continued... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Text sources: it.m.wikipedia.org; en.m.wikipedia.org; archeotour.net; mandraedera.cc; sardegnaturismo.it; sarnow.com; advancedsciencenews; onlinelibrary.wiley.com ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maud Webster, Water-Temples of Sardinia: Identification, Inventory and Interpretation, Master's Degree Thesis, Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, 2014 diva-portal.org

💧Pozzo Sacro di Santa Cristina, Paulilatino, Sardinia ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2018. All Rights Reserved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Part 2 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The site consists of three parts: the 11th or 12th century BCE sacred well temple and surrounding stone structures dating back to the Nuragic civilisation of the Bronze Age; a single-tower nuraghe and some elongated stone huts of uncertain date, along with a nuragic village, which is currently being excavated; and thirdly a Christian sanctuary, which includes the small rural church of Santa Cristina, built in medieval times by Camaldolese monks. Around the church is a Christian village with characteristic small "muristenes" dwellings that are still used today to house pilgrims on the occasion of the nine-day "nuinas" prayers. The original church, of which very little remains, was apparently built largely with stones taken from the (now completely missing) architectural elevation above the sacred nuragic well nearby. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The oldest water temples were built in the style of the nuraghe, with rough non-rectangular blocks of stone. Over time they were constructed with greater and greater accuracy. The most common type is composed of a circular well excavated then built with blocks of stone. When complete, it was accessed by steps that descended to the water level. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Santa Cristina is one of the finest examples of the elaborate religious architecture of the Nuragic era. It consists of an entranceway (dromos) with steps leading to an underground circular domed chamber (tholos), all surrounded above ground by an elliptical enclosing wall (teamenos) that separates the sacred area from the profane area. The teamenos surrounds another wall which has a "lock" shape when imagined from above. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ continued... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Text sources: it.m.wikipedia.org; en.m.wikipedia.org; archeotour.net; mandraedera.cc; sardegnaturismo.it; sarnow.com; advancedsciencenews; onlinelibrary.wiley.com ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maud Webster, Water-Temples of Sardinia: Identification, Inventory and Interpretation, Master's Degree Thesis, Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, 2014 diva-portal.org

St Declan’s monastic site, Ardmore, Co. Waterford dates to the 6th century and is one of the oldest of such sites in Ireland. The ruined cathedral is most famed for the Romanesque frieze of biblical scenes adorning the west gable.
