The façade of the church in Schöngrabern in Lower Austria or stone Bible, as it is also called, is home to many peculiar Romanesque sculptures from the 13th century. Among them are scenic representations as well as many heads like these. Their calm expression and their placement high up on the façade give the impression that they stare over the heads of the visitors into eternity. These types of sculptures can be found in many places in the Romanesque architecture, including facades, naves and cloisters. But why were they placed there and what should they tell us? Are they simply decoration or do they have a deeper meaning? Much has been and still is speculated about these questions. What do you think?

#church #romanesquearchitecture #historyofart

Featured 📷 and caption by @oldchurchesindy 🕯 St Boniface Catholic Church (still used by congregation, 1902, Evansville, Romanesque). For a hot second, you’d think du wärst in Deutschland zurück. Original building was built in 1881 but on March 30, 1902 (Holy Saturday), the church building was struck by lightning at 11:30pm. A fire broke out and raged on through Easter morning. Only the 12 inch brick walls were left standing, and a few of the valuable articles were saved. Plans were quickly made to rebuild the church superior in beauty and size to the one destroyed. The original walls were used, gables where added, and the steeples were lowered to 175 feet. The construction costs totaled $62,000 and the building was rededicated later that year. 🔥 The St. Boniface grotto, modeled after the grotto at Lady of Lourdes in France, was built underneath the church in 1914. The flood of 1937 filled the grotto with 3 feet of water damaging several statues and caused it to close soon after; it was reopened in 1972. Thanks to my dad (@bflittle3) for these pics from his recent trip to Evansville. . . . . . #oldchurchesindy #romanesque #romanesquearchitecture #romanesquechurch #romanesquecathedral #architectureromane #hey_ihadtosnapthat #Whereareyougoingnext #wanderyearsco #aswediscover #mustvisitplaces #exploreindiana #beautifulindiana #igindiana #onlyinindiana #myindiana #visitindiana #indiana_explored #indianasveryown #historicalplace #instachurch #beautifulbuildings #oldarchitecture historicalarchitecture #churchphotography #churchesandcastles #churchesofinstagram #churchesoftheworld #Churcharchitecture #Religiousarchitecture #Churchhistory

📍: Wicker Park (West Town Community Area) 🏠: Another Romanesque beauty built in 1891. Originally a single family home but has since been split into multiple apartments. The original owner of the house was Ole A. Thorp, a Norwegian immigrant to Chicago in 1880. He ran an import export business and in 1893 was appointed as a commissioner to the World’s Colombian exhibition representing Norway and Sweden.

Travel Tuesday - Photo # 1 Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France . This is a photo of a Stryge on the West Façade of Notre Dame Cathedral overlooking the city. I liked him bc he was just sitting there sticking his tongue out at everyone below. Hahaha . The Strix or Stryge, is a creature resembling an owl or bat, which was said to eat human flesh. The strix appeared in classical Roman literature; it was described by the Roman poet Ovid, who was widely read in the Middle Ages, as a large-headed bird with transfixed eyes, rapacious beak, and greyish white wings. They were part of the visual message for the illiterate worshipers, symbols of the evil and danger that threatened those who did not follow the teachings of the church. . . . #wanderlust #worldtraveler #travel #travelandlife #historic #aroundtheworld #worldly #sightseeing #traveler #travels #helloworld #adventure #adventureseeker #traveltheworld #france #romanesquearchitecture #europe  #paris #notredame #notredamecathedral #stryge #gargoyle #gothic #gothiccathedral #scultpture #cathedral #frenchgothic #medieval #romanesque

📍: Bronzeville/Grand Boulevard. Grand Boulevard (the original name for Martin Luther King Drive) was landscaped in 1874, just three years after the great fire. It became a popular carriage route which drew upper class Chicagoan’s to the area where they then built mansions overlooking the boulevard. 🏠: Built in 1891 in what I believe is the Romanesque Revival style. Some characteristics of this style are rough faced square stones, round towers, pilasters with spiral and leaf designs, low broad arches, and complicated roofing systems.

Gothic architecture is all the rage on the European tourism circuit. Think Notre-Dame de Paris, Prague Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Cologne Cathedral... • But when I’m traveling, I get excited to find lesser appreciated Romanesque gems. Those older and simpler churches, the precursors to Gothic glory. Bonus points if they’re in a small village. • So I love this church in Bidarray. It’s half yellow and half brick, rounded at the back, surrounded by a terraced graveyard, and overlooking a beautiful country view. • One of my favorite churches of all time. Europe can keep its Gothic cathedrals. I’ll take the Basque Country’s Romanesque village churches any time.

Yesterday I visited Cenacolo Vinciano with #famreds (my family!) which was simply magic but not photographable. We also explored Santa Maria delle Grazie and Sant'Ambrogio church where we found this funny and fruity romanesque decoration!

April 27, 2018: Bolzano, Italy. Duomo di Bolzano as viewed from Walther Platz. This 4th C. Cathedral presents both Romanesque and Gothic stylistic elements and sports a unique tiled roof with a green, yellow and white diamond pattern. I saw only the exterior of this church while waiting for a bus to take me to Roncolo Castle. Doing some research from home after my travels, I read that the interior is a peaceful and contemplative space, without any spectacular religious art or architectural details. I’m sorry I missed the experience. Sounded perfect. ******************************* #bolzano , #bolzanobozen , #bolzanocity , #gothicarchitecture , #romanesquearchitecture , #cathedrals , #bozen , #oberbozen , #ig_italy_ , #architecturalhistory , #clocktowers , #sudtyrol , #altoadigesüdtirol , #sudtirol_lovers , #südtirol , #sudtiroloaltoadige , #waltherplatz , #italianarchitecture , #f8photographycollective , #nikond750📸
