If reefs get stressed by environmental changes like temperature/light/nutrients, they expel algae housed in their tissues, making them white. When a reef bleaches it’s not dead; corals can survive a bleaching event, but they’re more likely to die. Above is a before/after. Sunscreen isn’t the main cause but choosing the right kind can help.

#CoralIsles is the best #ReefFriendly, #OxybenzoneFreeSunscreen & #OctinoxateFreeSunscreen!☀️
We are broad spectrum, water resistant, #parabenfree chemical sunscreen that rubs in like a non-greasy lotion.🏝️
Chemical Sunscreens work by absorbing UVA/B rays from the sun, while Mineral Sunscreens sit on top of your skin & deflect rays like a mirror.
🙅♀️ Titanium DiOxide, a #mineralsunscreen ingredient, has been shown to produce hydrogen peroxide in the sea which harms organisms reefs eat. It isn’t Broad Spectrum either.
#ZincSunscreen is better, but only if it is #NonNanoSunscreen (an unregulated term –any company can say they’re #NonNano- but if not tested & proven true, #ZincOxidesunscreen is very harmful to the environment). Additionally, zinc sunscreen has been noted by divers to flake off –since it sits on top of your skin instead of being absorbed– & settle on the seafloor.
🙅🏿♂️ Consumer Reports showed Zinc-based Sunscreen to often have an incorrect SPF claim too – if it says that it’s SPF 30, it might not be.
🦀To top it off, Coral Reefs actually make chemical sunscreens themselves when they are in danger of overheating!
Consumer Reports suggests using an avobenzone-based sunscreen.
Coral Isles is FDA tested to ensure the SPF protection stated on the label. Protect Your Skin AND #ProtecttheReef – why choose? 🐙
In the end, our main goals are sunscreen education & Reef Conservation efforts, so we’re happy if you use any kind of #reefsafesunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Melanoma is no joke, & neither is #ReefBleaching.
