Just spent four amazing days in the Alladale Wilderness Reserve: a 23,000 acre wilderness conservation and restoration project in the highlands of Scotland lead by maverick environmentalist (aka wolf man) Paul Lister. The plan - replant native tree species in a region deforested centuries ago while also managing native red deer populations so saplings can survive. Without apex predators like wolves, deer have overpopulated the region and dramatically altered the landscape (similar to what occurred in Yellowstone National Park). The next evolution of the project - reintroduce wolves to the highlands after being hunted to extinction in the area long ago, causing a beneficial cascade effect on the ecosystem. It’s an uphill battle to change hearts and minds but bringing the land back to its original condition is priceless. Also, Alladale is an amazing place to visit and stay with activities and landscapes like no other . Learn more through the link in my bio.
