Flash back Friday! Did you see what I did there 😏 As a trainee I cannot stress enough about the importance in which you should place on training the posterior chain. Not only do these muscles hold the key to a strong athletic physique. They also play a huge role in maintaining good posture! If we all focused on the muscles we can’t see in the mirror more often ie legs/ back, we would all be better off. Try this out! - Great for shoulder and core stability. Great way to hit the serratus anterior. - If you don’t have one of these things get a bosu ball. Hold it by edges and slowly rock side to side by rotating your shoulders (not shifting your body). You want control not speed. Keep everything nice and tight. Do 10 side to side rocks followed by 1 push up. Push ups should be controlled with as much balance as possible. Do 5 total push ups with the rocking followed by 5 continuous push ups. - If you have shoulder pain this may be good for you but really focus and control the weight.

Way back weds 🙌🏾 Although it would be amazing to hold this kind of condition year round, it’s not really feasible. Especially if your genetic set point (where your body likes to sit comfortably) is of a higher body fat percentage. Being extremely lean is great for peaking for a holiday, shoot, comp or because you have a goal of getting into the best shape of your life for example. For most of us mere mortals the goal should be maintain a healthy body composition where we can enjoy all the benefits that come with this state for the majority of the time. Ie good energy, labido, being able to progress in the weight room (integral for continued progress), good sleep and all the other benefits. Let’s talk about a muscle that often is forgotten about, serratus anterior. Aka the boxer’s muscle! 🥊🥊 It helps the shoulder blade glide forward along our rib cage, similarly to when a boxer throws a punch. (Video 1 shows it in action!)⁣ ⁣ So what’s the issue? Well, serratus anterior can essentially be “turned off”. It stops functioning properly due to a variety of reasons. More often than not a key contributor to its dysfunction can be related to our posture. An example we all can relate to is hunching over a desk for long periods of time. This position brings our shoulder blades up off the rib cage leading to scapular winging 👎🏼(see last picture). When this occurs our other muscles and joints try to “pick up the slack”. This contributes to faulty movement patterns along the kinetic chain and usually aches/pains. Kind of like we discussed in my previous post 😉🤘🏼 ⁣ So what can we do? First of all, we can re-educate that muscle on how to perform its job. Most individuals have a tough time activating this muscle separately from the other ranges of motions within the shoulder girdle. These videos are great tools to help you start working on how to properly retrain the serratus anterior. Give it a shot and see if you are able to activate this muscle on your own! ⁣

Winging scapula (shoulder blades) are the result of a weak serratus anterior and lower trapezius. The serratus pull the scapula flat to the back and forward around the thorax and keeps them from winging.@jacquelinemonroe is demonstrating the winging in this video. . If your blades are winging, your shoulders are not as stable as they should be. This places you at more risk for shoulder injuries, impingement, labral tears etc. If you are experiencing neck pain take this into consideration as well. The serratus allows the arms to move in a large range of motion without compressing the neck. Engaging the serratus in pushing and punching motions will give you more power as well. . . Pay attention to what your scaps are doing throughout the day and during your workouts. Work on protracting (scooping the blades forward) them in a pushup position by pressing as hard into the ground as you can. Think about trying to reach your spine toward the ceiling without rounding the upper back. . . Start applying this scooping motion to your movements and practice it throughout the day. Pay attention to what your shoulders do and make sure they are not shrugging up to the ears. SERRATUS (science) . 🔴Serratus anterior is the muscle placed right under the side portion of your chest and its insertion points go all the way to the end of the medial border of the scapulae. . 🔴Serratus consists of 3 separated insertion points: SA superior, SA intermediate, SA inferior! . 🔴Primary mechanical role of serratus is scapular movement around thorax. This includes scapular protraction(it acts as antagonist to rhomboids), scapular retraction(synergist to rhomboids), arm elevation(moving scapula laterally and forward), scapular rotation, scapular upward rotation(shoulder joint stabilization during overhead moves) and even in shoulder girdle fixation which means assisting in respiration. . How to develop serratus muscle? 🔵Simply use/incorporate 2 mechanical roles which force the highest serratus activation: scapular retraction and scapular upward rotation. . 🔵Any variation of overhead pressing also activates serratus but if you press your shoulders up at the top of the each rep your serratus will work extra hard to stabilize the shoulder joints. . 🔵Push ups engage serratus quite a bit but if you add scapular protraction on top of the movement you'll push your serratus activation even further. 💡Based on studies using resistance bands on push ups create even higher serratus activation because res. bands increase the requirement of scapular stabilization. . 🔵Also exercises that have high degree of serratus activation are dumbbell pullovers and ab wheel rollouts because they both include scapular upward rotation. Combine that with high resistance and you get killer serratus exercises. . 🔵In order to have prominent visible serratus get leaner!
