Even Physical Therapists do exercise we tell patients to do...see! This is a great one for rehabbing the shoulder. I’ve been having some pain with catching objects, 🚴, and end range lifting movements 🏋️‍♀️. Incorporated this one into my routine about a week or two ago. Gotta build up that strength! Did this after my 8k row so that I could make sure to work the reciprocal muscles. It was hard to choose just 9 photos to share! What a gift to spend 3 nights cuddled up against the Tantalus Range. @mtnmonte was able to get in a couple of final training days before his last exam. We climbed the north face of Serratus and rapped the west face. Monte did a stellar job guiding some of the Crosmique Arete as well. When he left, luckily I was able to bum a ride out the following day, allowing for a solo trip of Dione. Do you ever work on shoulder blade push-ups? They’re usually done in a hands-and-knees position (but there are lots of other variations too), and they’re becoming more of a staple movement in many yoga classes these days 👍🏼 . . . These push-ups are a great way to improve our ability to differentiate shoulder blade (scapula) movement from spinal movement - something almost everyone could use! . . . Welllll once you’ve got the foundational scapula push-ups down, it’s time to up the ante a bit! 🔥 . . . In this variation, I’ve increased the stability demands of the movement by placing blocks under my forearms, and my hands are also floating, so they can’t be my supportive base (whoa!!) . . . These changes make the shoulder blade push-ups SO challenging! I don’t even know if you can DO it - they are that challenging. Haha do you like how I said that? It’s mostly just to get you to try it so you can see what I mean 😜 . . . However, make sure you can do regular shoulder blade push-ups well before you try these. . . . (Note: shoulder blade push-ups are not cat/cow, and they are also not normal push-ups where you bend your elbows - know what I mean? 😀) . . . The serratus (along with the rhomboids) pull the scapula flat to the back and forward around the thorax and keeps them from winging.  It originates on the 1st-8th ribs at the side of the chest and inserts along the entire length of the medial border of the scapula.  It is located deep to the subscapularis. . . The name comes from the fact that it looks like the sharp teeth of a saw or serrated knife.  It allows the arms to move in a large range of motion without compressing the neck.  Engaging the serratus in pushing and punching motions will give you more power as well. . . If your scapula are winging you should work on strengthening this muscle!  It’s weak in the majority of people.  If you have neck pain or shoulder pain this is an important muscle for you to pay attention to.  Good exercises to start with are scap pushups and scap pull-ups while focusing on the rotation of the blade that we teach in our videos. . . Your mind feels like a jigsaw puzzle? Too many pieces to be put together? We all tend to get stuck in our heads most of the time - some of us more than others. Although it is wonderful to ponder life and reflect upon ourselves, the truth is that our thoughts usually are not so upbeat. When we are „in our heads“, our thoughts rather turn to what we should have for dinner (or not?), why our partner was a jerk last night (👿), why our colleague took credit for OUR idea today (👿👿), that we forgot to water the plant (actually the last one left), and, shoot, left the wallet at home (dinner problem solved), and so on and on and on... When our minds wander in any direction from what we are actually doing, our brains‘ default mode „kicks in“, meaning that the brain defaults to a rather worry-based thinking and we are less likely to be feeling happy. Do you have issues with front squats? 🤬Have you been told that your lats are the reason why you can’t get your elbows higher? This probably isn’t the case. If you can lift your arm above shoulder height, then your lats aren’t an issue. . . What is? Thoracic mobility and shoulder blade control are probable culprits. Yes the wrist and triceps can be tight, but mobility in those areas generally improve quickly with continued front squat practice. What doesn’t improve quickly for many people is the ability to set the blades in the right position and extend the thoracic spine (upper back). Controlling those two things make a profound difference in getting the elbows higher in a front squat. . . The shoulder blade positioning is explained in the first video above and in last week’s videos. What isn’t explained is the thoracic extension. We talk a lot about maintaining neutral pelvis, pulling your rib boobs down into your belly, and then pulling your blades down into position. For many of you, actively extending your upper back (trying to arch it back instead of letting it round forward) WITHOUT letting your rib boobs flare out is a very difficult task. . . To improve this thoracic extension, hold a dumbbell or kettlebell on your chest and work on aligning your posture, then extend the upper back while simultaneously scooping the armpits forward. These two actions will help to lift the elbows a ton. Don’t let your ribs flare. . . What we don’t want to see you do in a front squat is to just simply drive your elbows higher. If you get your upper back extending and your blades set in the right position, you won’t have to work as hard to push your elbows higher and the chances of shoulder pain will drastically reduce. . . Are there other factors that can contribute to a limited front squat mobility? Sure! A lack of hip and ankle mobility are common issues as well. The name comes from the fact that it looks like the sharp teeth of a saw or serrated knife.  It allows the arms to move in a large range of motion without compressing the neck.  Engaging the serratus in pushing and punching motions will give you more power as well. . . #pushup לאחרונה אני זזה בתנועה חדשה. מנסה למצוא את התנועה החופשית בחדר כושר(?!) לרוב אני זזה בתנועות רכות, במחול, בפילאטיס, בפלייסטיק, ביוגה ולאחרונה החלטתי שאני רוצה למצוא משהו חדש. משקולות, חדר כושר. תנועה חופשית וארוכה כמעט שאני לא מוצאת בעולם הזה אבל זה מכניס אותי למסגרת, שזה מעניין גם למצוא ולהרגיש. התנועה הקווית שחדר הכושר בונה לא מעניינת אותי אבל אני נעזרת בה כדי לחזק תנועות שלמות במעגלים שלמים של תנועה והפושאפ עבורי הוא הוכחה. מעולם לא הצלחתי את הפושאפ. לרדת עד למטה עם המרפקים שהולכים אחורה, עם הסיבוב של חגורת הכתפיים וכוח שיוצא מכל הגוף. זה ברור במחשבה שהפוש אפ הוא תרגיל של כוח מתפרץ שכל הגוף עובד יחדיו - ידיים, שכמות, גב בטן וגם פלג גוף תחתון. אבל ביישום לא הצלחתי למצוא אותו. לא הצלחתי להרים את עצמי לאחר שירדתי וזה היה מבאס התחושה שאני לא מצליחה אבל אני מבינה. לאחר הרבה נפילות והתרסקויות, הצלחתי. הצלחתי למצוא את החיבור של הזרוע בדחיפה אל ה #serratus והתחושה היא מדהימה איך שהסרטוס מתחבר אל האלכסונים של הבטן והדחיפה מעלה זה פשוט מעלה אותך משם. תחושה של כוח ושחרור בו זמנית. מרגש. המשימה עוד לא הושלמה ועכשיו אמשיך לחפש את החיבור לרגלים, הרי אנחנו חליפת לייקרה אחת, ולא יחידות של שריר, שאני הולכת עם המחשבה הזו בתוך התנועה אני יודעת שהמציאה שלה תהיה רק באינטגרציה שלמה של הגוף כולו. שהתנועה הקווית היא חלק מהתרגול ולא עיקרו, שהכוח מגיע מחליפת הלייקרה שבה טמון הכוח, בהרמוניה ולא בבידוד של השרירים. ושזה יגיע זה יהיה הדבר האמיתי. לחיים🥂 12/08/18
