Mica. Is. Everywhere. It's in the majority of our make-up because it sparkles like the sun - illuminating, adding shimmer, blurring imperfections, making us look bomb. Every single mainstream cosmetics brand uses Mica in the majority of their products. But, Mica has a dirty little secret, and it should rock you to the core.
An estimated 25% of Mica on the market is mined illegally in North East India, by approximately 20,000 children - as young as six years old. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is notoriously difficult to know the ultimate origin of most of the Mica in our products when it is traded on the black market and combined with legal sources. Some brands have taken a stand and vow to only source Mica ethically - Beautycounter is one of them - but most say nothing. And silence speaks louder than words. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PLEASE take a moment to find out if the brands you love source their ingredients ethically, particularly Mica. Check out the Responsible Mica Initiative for other brands that are committed to eradicating exploitation from the supply chain.
I want to glow like I'm literally made of stardust, but not at the expense of child exploitation. Given the choice, I'll just wear a paper bag, thanks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Make wise choices, friends. We are all in this together. ❤️
