Many of us are struggling to be in the ‘present.’ Our mind races to every future scenario, every past stumble, and anything else it can think of that does not involve being here now. We jump from task to task, thought to thought, and we bombard our days with distractions that unplug us from being present; dumping hours of invaluable time scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, IG, websites, apps, tv channels, fill in the blank. We check out of our present reality day after day, high on Mary Jane, boozing off the bottle, numbing the mind with impulsive eating, immersing ourselves in social experiences that do not serve, and even though we know all these things, we still choose them.
The present moment makes us uncomfortable, because we are uncomfortable with who we are. We have mastered avoiding it, and in this day and age of endless escapes, we can go a whole lifetime neglecting the lesson of presence.
Yet, the present is the only moment we can experience peace. It’s the only moment, because it’s the only true reality. Peace does not live in the past or in the future. Peace doesn’t come after we’ve achieved something, or after we’ve landed our dream job, partner, body, life. Peace does not come with an external condition.
Peace exists Now. Experiencing the true peace we are all seeking, involves being comfortable with every version of ourselves, being present with love and acceptance for each One.
I spent years checking out, fully unplugged and dissociated from the present; a permeating vacancy that followed me everywhere I went; those were miserable years. This past year I’m observing the peace growing, the desire to be present expanding, the comfort with who I am evolving. It was never peace that had left me, it was I that had abandoned it. Peace has been here all along, patiently awaiting my return. It is beautiful to see how peaceful life can feel, when we choose to be present with the Self.
