Band pulls. First time doing them with only utilising the front hooks. I performed these in a semi sumo/ wide-ish squat stance, double overhand grip and with a 3 second eccentric tempo. If you don’t have hooks you can attach bands around the bottom of the squat rig. Same same. The seemingly endless debate on low carb vs low fat caloric restriction on weight loss is in my opinion fueled by 1. mixed anecdotal claims, 2. Broscience, and 3. mixed outcomes in the scientific literature. As for the latter, limitations to study design and methods such as small sample sizes, relatively short term treatment periods, very heterogenous subject pool, or crude monitoring of dietary compliance and acitvity, introduce confounding factors that could in in turn influence the interpretation of research findings. As a result, we have no real empirical consensus on the low fat vs. low carb debate. However, just recently one of the most comprehensive randomized control trials was published in JAMA. This study examined the weight loss of 609 male or female subjects undergoing 12 weeks of either a low fat or low carb caloric restriction diet. The grouos demonstrated no differences in caloric intake at 3, 6, and 12 months. The data analysis at the 12 month follow up showed no significant difference between the two dietary treatments in total weight loss and change in resting metabolic rate (other variables also tested). This study, considering its magnitude, provides decently strong evidence suggesting that caloric deficit is indeed the main driver of weight loss. In my opinion, macronutrient composition in caloric restrictive diets (at least for fat and carbs... protein 👍) may be more relevant and impactful in already "healthy" weight individuals such as someone with above average body composition looking for a bit more fat loss. The study is unfortunately closed access but check it out on examine.com (a great resource). Next up: are there genetic predispositions to low carb or low fat diet responses?

#tbt to easily the most disappointing lift of my short lifting career so far. This was my opener, 562 #, a weight that should have flown up before we jumped into the 600’s for my next attempt. But when I started pulling on the bar, it felt like a ton. My body was burnt out and I just had nothing left to give on this day. This lift is my fuel for this offseason and next prep. My first true taste of earned not given. I’m not against benching pitchers, but in a team setting we need to be as efficient as possible. The push-up and it’s variations check a hell of a lot of boxes - body control and coordination, scap stability and movement while pressing, anterior core activation, spine positioning, the list goes on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Also shown are some heavy squats, rows, hanging leg raises (another underrated exercise), and a little 90-90 and scap work. SPORTS NUTRITION DIFFERENCES.... or maybe not so different 🤷🏼‍♀️ . For those who may be new: I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none (well, except of exercise physiology technically 😜). I’ve been all over the spectrum- a team sport athlete (lacrosse), a newby lifter (post lacrosse), I power lifted for a bit with minimal/no cardio, I’ve done a hybrid of lifting + running, and currently am running primarily + climbing + a bit of strength training. . What I want to talk about is my nutrition over the years. While yes, it has changed as my knowledge and education have evolved. Each mode of fitness to the naked eye “requires different nutrition” which is not entirely untrue. . However, most people may have the impression runners need drastically different nutrients than lifters. And possibly LESS, like proteins in carbs. . Plot twist: endurance athletes need just as much, if not in some cases MORE protein each day. . Lifting and endurance activities work on two different cellular signaling pathways: 1) lifting- that encourages proteins to be recruited to repair and build more muscle mass (gainz) and 2) endurance- proteins to be recruited to repair damaged tissue and develop the genes to elicit mitochondrial biogenesis (bigger, stronger, and more mitochondria). But in both situations there’s one thing in common: WE NEED PROTEIN. . Similarly, carbs are a primary source of energy for lifting due to the energy systems used (phosph-creatine system + anaerobic glycolysis), with endurance being a hybrid of fats + carbs (aerobic respiration can utilize fats). Here’s the “plot twist”- people doing sustained cardio activities beyond 60-90+ minutes are likely to require MORE carbohydrates, daily, on average, than a weight lifter due to the greater depletion of our glucose stores (muscle + liver), with lifting typically depleting it similarity but likely to a lesser extent. . So, yes, your nutrition will vary from mode to mode. But honestly, between these two extremes my protein is still just as high with maybe a tad more with more of an emphasis now for recovery than what was needed for muscle gain before, my fats the same, and manipulation of carbs based on training.👌

Went for 280x2 on box squats tonight, been dealing with a lil hip flexor/glute pain lately, but trying to stay on track for the meet in March. Second rep didn't quite go as planned... There may have been a reversal on my part, it might not entirely be @darrenlafreniere s fault with the side spot... Still the heaviest weight I've had on my back in the gym, so I'm pretty pleased.
