This is a van Gogh painting at the State Hermitage Museum. It is titled “Landscape with House and Ploughman” by Vincent van Gogh. He composed this in France on October 1889 using oil on canvas. It measures 33 x 41.4 cm. This original artwork is being held here at this museum in Saint Petersburg. This landscape is unusual in its elevated, almost bird's-eye point of view. Such an angle can be seen as an attempt to look at the world in the Japanese way, natural for an artist obsessed with Japan. However, we cannot speak of serious influence here: Van Gogh's view was individual and came from his own impressions. The dynamism distinguishing this canvas is alien to Far Eastern landscapes. The painting has an enormous internal energy. The crossing diagonals forming the borders of the fields and the ploughed furrows, the contours of the roofs, the row of cypresses - such vectors strain the composition, but not so much as to disturb the unity of the whole. It is a study from nature. The colouring of the painting and the action of the figures show us that it was executed in autumn, a time when Van Gogh worked not only on the hospital grounds, but outside them as well. #painting #palette #palettes #санктпетербург #vangogh #oilpainting #canvas #россия #russia #painters #россия🇷🇺 #vincentvangogh #museum #paintings #statehermitagemuseum #vangoghmuseum #arts #dutch #oiloncanvas #artworks #landscapepainting #landscapepaintings #landscape #painter #paint #landscapes #artist #artists #art #artwork

Matisse in Hermitage: today is Sunday and I chose this "A game of bowls" to conclude our week with Matisse. Painted in 1908, this painting is part of a series of work on the theme of the Golden Age. Pétanque is a popular game in the south of France. But Matisse reinterpreted this daily scene in a primordial setting with mysterious nudes. The composition is extremely simplified with the usage of green, blue and red. I like the expression of the boy on top right: a mixture of content, calmness and naivety. Matisse wrote in 1908: "What interests me most is neither still life or landscape: it is the human figure ... The simplest means are those which best enable an artist to express himself." Maybe this will help you better understand the Golden Age in the mind of Matisse. Happy Sunday! #typartsharing #typartlearning #typartlove #typartcruise #hermitage #hermitagemuseum #statehermitagemuseum #artwork #art #arthistory #modernart #matisse #henrimatisse #matissepainting #goldenage #petanque #blue #green #red #paintingcomposition #bowlgame #humanfigure #nudeart #nudepainting

Matisse in Hermitage: today you will see an unusual work of Matisse with tender and soft colors instead of the bright and explosive ones. "Bouquet of arum lilies" was painted in 1912 during Matisse's stay in Morroco. The light was magnificant but very different from the south of France, and this is reflected in the artist's creation. This is an oil painting but looks more like a watercolor because the composition is so light and airy. Matisse chose to leave some areas unpainted so the white canvas stands out and strengthens the effect. Different from the "Gardens of Luxembourg", the artist came back to drawings. With only brief and simple lines, Matisse captured the elegance of the causually arranged lilies. #typartsharing #typartlearning #typartlove #typartcruise #hermitage #hermitagemuseum #statehermitagemuseum #artwork #artist #arthistory #art #matisse #matissepainting #henrimatisse #oilpainting #watercolorpainting #stilllifepainting #stilllife #lily #arumlily #drawings #morroco #elegance #flowerarrangement #lightpainting

Matisse in Hermitage: you may not expect a portrait in green, but Matisse did with "Woman in green", painted in 1909 during his stay in Provence. We don't know the identity of the woman in the portrait but she looks calm and confident in her gesture. With her green sleeves, she somehow melts into the profond and intense green color background, which reminds us of the lush vegetation in the south of France, but also echoes with the wonder and mystery of life. The bright red carnation she wears on her light green blouse jumps out of the green and catches our eyes. This is why the painting is also called "Woman with a red carnation". #typartsharing #typartlearning #typartlove #typartcruise #hermitage #hermitagemuseum #statehermitagemuseum #artwork #art #arthistory #matisse #henrimatisse #matissepainting #portraitpainting #womanportrait #portrait #green #red #womaningreen #redcarnation #provence

Matisse in Hermitage: Today we will look at another early work of Matisse, The Gardens of Luxembourg, painted in 1901. It is not a classic photo-like painting: the colors define the form and create the space. The trees are simplified silhouette without detail of individual leaves or branches. We are seeing the garden in the eyes of Matisse, a world full of colors, colors that reflect the feeling and the mood of the artist. Despite the unreal colors, I can still feel the season of the real world: I imagine it is early autumn when the sun still shines and the vegetation still has its lush. Matisse in Hermitage: sunflower is a preferred subject in still life paintings, because of its radiant yellow color and strong link to the sun symbolizing light and energy. We have all seen the sunflowers of Van Gogh. Today I want to share with you an early work of Matisse painting the sunflower. Vase of sunflowers was painted between 1898 and 1899, during the artist's visit of Corsica. Awaken by the intense light of the south of France, Matisse changed from the flickering and floating style of Impressionist to the heavier and more energetic brushstrokes emphasizing the form (probably under the influence of Cezanne?). The colors still remain true to the nature. But the fauvist is not far away as we will discover in the painting tomorrow. #typartsharing #typartsharing #typartlove #typartcruise #hermitage #hermitagemuseum #statehermitagemuseum #matisse #henrimatisse #matissepainting #stilllife #stilllifepainting #oilpainting #art #arthistory #artwork #artist #modernart #modernartists #sunflower #sunflowers #yellow #light #sunshine🌞 #impressionist #cezanne #vangoghsunflowers #colorpainting
