#Repost @shawnheinrichs ・・・ Iceland, you need to choose. Whale watching or killing whales. You can’t have them both. It doesn’t make sense that you’re killing off the species we are traveling to see. It’s time to make a decision. But in the meantime, I am not visiting your country until you put a stop to this unnecessary hunt. TAKE ACTION to #StopTheHunt - link in bio. 🚫🐋 My colleague is bringing all of your names to the 67th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Brazil next week. 76,675 have signed. Let's get to 100,000! Already signed? Please tag 3 friends who 💙🐋 and urge them to join us in telling Iceland to please choose tourism over whaling. #stopicelandwhaling #iwc67 #worthmorealive

"The Great Whale" - 🔵@maestro320 Notes: This post courtesy of our friends at The Oceanic Preservation Society @oceanicpreservationsociety - There are only approximately 10k remaining on earth. This is 93% LOWER than their population numbers during the middle of the 20th century. @greatwhaledoc is shedding light on the serious issue of blue whales and ship strikes. With your help, we can make sure their population rebounds for generations to come! 🐋💙 ・・・ Learn more about the project here >> bit.ly/greatwhaledoc • The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whale parvorder, Mysticeti. At up to 29.9 metres (98 ft) in length and with a maximum recorded weight of 173 tonnes (190 short tons), it is the largest animal known to have ever existed. Blue whales were abundant in nearly all the oceans on Earth until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over a century, they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 blue whales worldwide, in at least five groups. The IUCN estimates that there are probably between 10,000 and 25,000 blue whales worldwide today. Before whaling, the largest population was in the Antarctic, numbering approximately 239,000 (range 202,000 to 311,000). There remain only much smaller (around 2,000) concentrations in each of the eastern North Pacific, Antarctic, and Indian Ocean groups. There are two more groups in the North Atlantic, and at least two in the Southern Hemisphere. As of 2014, the Eastern North Pacific blue whale population had rebounded to nearly its pre-hunting population. - #Conservation #Education #Research #OneOceanGlobal #OceanOptimism #BlueWhale #TheGreatWhale #StopIcelandWhaling #SaveOurOceans

Did you know that whale watching is the number one tourist attraction in Iceland. It generates about 20M a year. But in that very water there is another company killing them. Which doesn’t make sense because whale meat is not in high demand. Iceland needs to stop!! #stopwhaling #stopicelandwhaling #racingextinction #endangeredspecies

As @captainpaulwatson always says, the camera is our greatest weapon! We feel it is our job to keep the world aware of what is happening when it comes to whaling. For those of you asking what you can do, please email or write polite letters to Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Jakobsdóttir and her party, the Left-Green movement, are opposed to whaling. . There is one company responsible for whaling in Iceland and they can be stopped. Parliament just needs to put tourism ahead of this barbaric industry that has no place in 21st century. . #Repost @oceanicpreservationsociety (@get_repost) ・・・ 😡 Some 1,500 tonnes of whale meat and related whale products were sent to Japan last Saturday, MBL reports. “The ship carrying the meat set sail from Hafnarfjörður last Saturday, and is reportedly taking the northeast route, meaning the ship will be traveling through the Arctic Sea. Not everything that was hunted over the summer was sent to Japan; there is still plenty of whale meat in frozen storage in Iceland. 146 whales were hunted by Hvalur hf., Iceland’s last fin whaling company, during the summer whaling season. This includes not only 144 fin whales, but two blue-fin hybrids. As reported, the killing of a blue-fin hybrid sparked outrage from around the world. Hunting endangered blue whales is flat-out illegal, even by Icelandic law. Any company that killed a blue whale would have their operations grounded immediately, and it could result in additional penalties. Inexplicably, though, hunting a hybrid of a blue and another whale is perfectly legal by Icelandic law, even if the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (@CITES) expressly forbids the practice. Whether or not Hvalur hf. will still be in operation next year remains to be seen.” #stopicelandwhaling #stopthehunt #worthmorealive #racingextinction

@Regran_ed from @maestro320 - "The Humpbacks Of Mo'orea" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: This incredible video edit was filmed on location in Mo'orea, French Polynesia with @pierre.serreli @teheiw @k.toerau courtesy of Travel and Tour Company, Mo'orea Ocean Adventures @mooreaoceanadventures - This whale season has been incredible. Watch the full video on our Facebook page! • Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 km (16,000 mi) each year. They feed in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth, fasting and living off their fat reserves. Their diet consists mostly of krill and small fish. Humpbacks have a diverse repertoire of feeding methods, including the bubble net technique. Like other large whales, the humpback was a target for the whaling industry. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, its population fell by an estimated 90% before a 1966 moratorium. While stocks have partially recovered to some 80,000 animals worldwide, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships and noise pollution continue to impact on the species. Recently, incidents of humpback whales protecting other species of animals such as seals and other whales from killer whales has been documented and filmed. Studies of such incidents indicate that the phenomenon is species-wide and global, with incidents being recorded at various locations across the world. In September 2017 in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, two adult humpback whales were observed protecting snorkeler and whale biologist Nan Hauser from a 4.5 m (15 ft) tiger shark, with one whale pushing the woman away from the shark while the other used its tail to block the predator's advances. This may be the first recorded incidence of humpback whales acting protectively over a human. - #Conservation #Education #Research #OneOceanGlobal #OceanOptimism #HumpbackWhale #Moorea #FrenchPolynesia #SaveOurWhales #StopIcelandWhaling

#Repost @cristinamittermeier ・・・ While I am honoured to receive the 2018 Leif Erikson Exploration History Award from The Exploration Museum in Húsavík, I cannot in good conscience visit Iceland to receive my award given the lack of action by the Icelandic government to end the barbaric hunting of endangered whales. I made the commitment along with more than 200,000 other people to choose tourism over whaling. If we are going to make an impact, we need to do more than talk or put our names on lists. I will not be contributing to Iceland’s tourism economy as long as the country continues this practice. It’s unfortunate that The Exploration Museum becomes caught in the cross-hairs. Just popping up to check out #Forster on my way down south. As the Humpback whales 🐋 return to their feeding grounds in Antarctica they travel closer to the coast. They have their calves with them so maybe it’s a safety factor. Late September and early October is one of the best times to see these gorgeous creatures on Australia’s east coat either from shore or a boat. Have you been whale watching?

"Armada" - 🔵Maestro's Notes: This amazing footage of a pod of Gray Whales was filmed off the Coast of San Diego, California courtesy of Aerial and Landscape Wildlife Photographer and Videographer, Domenic Biagini @dolphindronedom - I am so ready for whales by the pod 🤙🏻 • The Gray Whale (Eschrichtius robustus), also known as the Grey Whale, Gray Back Whale, Pacific Gray Whale, or California Gray Whale is a baleen whale that migrates between feeding and breeding grounds yearly. It reaches a length of 14.9 meters (49 ft), a weight of 36 tonnes (40 short tons), and lives between 55 and 70 years. The common name of the whale comes from the gray patches and white mottling on its dark skin. Gray whales were once called devil fish because of their fighting behavior when hunted. The gray whale is the sole living species in the genus Eschrichtius, which in turn is the sole living genus in the family Eschrichtiidae. This mammal descended from filter-feeding whales that appeared at the beginning of the Oligocene, over 30 million years ago. The gray whale is distributed in an eastern North Pacific (North American) population and a critically endangered western North Pacific (Asian) population. North Atlantic populations were extirpated (perhaps by whaling) on the European coast before AD 500 and on the American coast around the late 17th to early 18th centuries. However, on May 8, 2010, a sighting of a gray whale was confirmed off the coast of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea, leading some scientists to think they might be repopulating old breeding grounds that have not been used for centuries. In May and June 2013 a gray whale was sighted off the coast of Namibia – the first confirmed in the Southern Hemisphere. The round-trip journey of one gray whale has set a new record for the longest mammal migration, covering a distance of more than 22,000 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean. Her migration has shown new insight into how endangered species are making drastic changes in their life style. - #Conservation #Education #Research #OneOceanGlobal #OceanOptimism #GrayWhale #SanDiego #California #SaveOurWhales #StopIcelandWhaling

If we want to share a healthy future, we must speak loudly and passionately about that dream. We must stand up for marine life. We need voices like yours to #StopIcelandWhaling. Sign the petition (link in bio) pledging not to visit Iceland until the commercial fin whaling industry stops operating. Help us reach 100,000 signatures by September 11th when the petition will be taken to the International Whaling Commission. #StopTheHunt Thank you @cristinamittermeier ! Your photos are so precious!

I’m sure this calf will be a warrior - already bearing an impressive pattern of scratches and scars. Certainly not afraid of us. Such an amazing experience with so many incredible moments. Thank you @pxlexplorer and @darrenjew and the rest of the team who work so hard for many months to ensure every guest has the experience of a lifetime.
