#weightinmonday Don’t get sick, fall and clobber your head from an #adrenalcrisis and in the process lift your #stresshormone tablets to cope with the stress. #Cortisol the #weightgain kingpin of #hormones revealed that I had experienced a higher loss the last few weeks than thought. Loss this week: 800 grams. Total loss - 18.6kg. Don’t underestimate the power of adrenal hormones. Life sustaining, when you don’t have enough in your engine; the body simply breaks down (hence fainting spells and a bruise still evident on the back of the head). This also occurred after giving the body a break for a week, to recuperate from the head punch. #Remembrance more movement is not necessarily better with #weightloss This week has scaled back to the ten minute exercises. 1.4kg to go ❤️

This is basically what you do post #adrenalfatigue you go looking for sunshine .... life can be quite ‘beige ‘as you step back into it anew. Because you still can’t do that much in the beginning. ____________________ I am now 10 months in on my healing and I am still trying to balance work life with staying healthy and fit ( via exercise) attending social events and having energy for friends and doing the activities and hobbies I loved doing once apon a time ( horses, surfboards and more). I’m not going to lie, it’s challenging at times. But I have a whole new respect and love for my body who always knows best. I listen more. On days it tells me to rest - I rest. I refuse to force my energy!! ✨ _______________ The things you can’t have: I have given away most of my expensive wine bottles from South Africa ( alcohol doesn’t resonate with me anymore )though I’ve never been accustomed to drinking that much . I control my caffeine levels and go for alternative options like teas and matcha lattes. I have been so squeaky clean in terms of my #celiac I am so proud of that because that’s serious business and has a huge impact on my health! ________________________ I still try to go on the walks that saved my life last year and remember that no matter what comes my way I am just a human. I am just an animal on this planet. Nothing more and I refuse to chase external things that won’t add to my overall happiness , health and energy levels. _______________________ You need to find out who you are without all of the “status frills” in life. Who are you without your job? Who are you without a partner? Who are you without your friends? Once you can answer these questions healing becomes easier - it’s not just about supplements. They can help boost your body internally but my loves you also need to do the work to find your sunshine again❤️🌻 . . #adrenalfatiguerecovery #healing #healthygut #healthylifestyle #happyhormones #hormonetherapy #hormonebalance #hormoneimbalance #recovery #chronicillness #autoimmune #autoimmunedisease #stress #stressless #stresshormone #cortisol #loveyourself #selfcareissacred #cannabiscommunity #happiness #healthiswealth

EXISTING vs LIVING ___________ I am doing it! Back at riding consistently two times per week plus the occasional extras. I worked out yesterday morning and ended my day with this beautiful fella who is a real cuddle bug too I’ve discovered! Wow! You feel alive when you take time and prioritize doing something you love with all your heart! I can’t begin to tell you how much inner peace , energy and joy being around horses gives me. Its always been a first love of mine since I was five. When I was 10 ALL I talked about all day long was horses - drove my mom nuts!! 😂😂 Nice to have a body that is finally able to do activities that I’ve missed and didn’t prioritize pre #adrenalfatigue - don’t ever cut out those important hobbies or interests ! That’s your zest of life you are slowly drowning and we all deserve joy! My sleep was so disturbed last night I woke up multiple times because of the ‘party people’. Do you know how important sleep is for your hormones? Your appetite is regulated by two called leptin and Ghrelin. If you’re sleep deprived the production of ghrelin increases - and you turn into a gremlin 😂 While if you’re in balance leptin keeps your appetite in check! __________________ I did manage to dream of horses though when I finally could go back to sleep....a long time since I’ve done that! This is from a barn I used to pass on my morning runs back in 2014 when I lived in Vermont. I was pretty in love with that place it was pure magic. I wish things could’ve worked out I was so ready to move into a townhouse in that tiny town. ______________ Being in the middle of nowhere is an addiction! It’s almost romantic - I remember all my nursery rhymes and my favorite children’s books and I’ve been to many places that could’ve been described in those same stories. You enter a bubble and could care less about the outside world - you don’t need it. Happened in Whistler, happened in Vermont, happened in Cape Town and hey Bermuda is really a tropical bubble on its own really so maybe that’s why I feel at home in the middle of nowhere. Places that feel like their own tiny world ... yeah I like those sorts of places! 💜 Such a load of mumbo jumbo from me but that’s what Sundays are for....I hope you enjoy yours 🌻 . . #adrenalfatigue #adrenalfatiguerecovery #happyhormones #hormonebalance #stress #stressless #stresshormone #travel #wanderlust #healing #recovery #relax #healthylifestyle #happiness #lonewolf #countrygirl #countrylife #balance #sundayvibes #chronicillness #autoimmune #autoimmunedisease #wildchild #sleep #hormonetherapy #hormoneimbalance

Now that I’ve covered the pros and cons of cortisol, it’s time to wrap things up with my recommendations in order to elude from chronically elevated cortisol Levels! . . Phosphatidylserine: Is present in every single human cell and it is critical to the maintenance of all cellular function, especially in the brain. Studies have shown that dosing with Phosphatidylserine can reduce prolonged elevated cortisol levels that comes with stressful exertion. With that being said, my two recommendations that I’ve personally have found to be helpful are Cort-Eaze by @nuethix_formulations and CortiSolve by @mpasupps! . . Magnesium Citrate: As mentioned in my last post, chronically elevated cortisol levels will lead to inadequate activity of your Parasympathetic Nervous System (“Rest-and-Digest”) due to the supremacy of the Sympathetic Nervous System. This is important to note because our Parasympathetic Nervous System relaxes muscles in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in order to digest food. Therefore, if the Sympathetic Nervous System is continuously active, our muscles within the GI tract won’t have time to relax—inhibiting us from properly digesting food. Dosing with Magnesium Citrate helps by relaxing the muscles within the digestive tract and help with regularity!

You may have heard a lot about athletes or body builders taking growth hormone- but there are hidden ones too! Cortisol, Estrogen, and Testosterone, all increase growth of something- especially weight. Cortisol (our stress hormone) increases blood sugar, and can put weight around our belly. Too much estrogen contributes to weight gain, water retention, and bloating in men and women (our fat cells also make estrogen, so we're fighting an uphill battle), and testosterone definitely makes things grow like muscle mass, bone mass, increased hair, and height (think of these last two hormones around puberty). Dairy too can be considered a growth hormone (such as how it makes babies grow quickly in the first few years of life), so nixing this from your diet is a great place to start. In addition, mitigating stress, and getting to bed around 10:30pm are also super effective! #weightloss #hormonehealth #weight #loseweight #growthhormone #estrogen #testosterone #cortisol #stresshormone #toomuchestrogen #balanceyourhormones #adrenalhealth #endocrinehealth #stressresponse #goodsleep #eatyourveggies #healthylifestyle #gettobedearly #nixdairy #nomoredairy #dairyfree

Recall from my last post cortisol is referred to as “the stress hormone” which is best known for helping fuel your body’s Sympathetic Nervous System (“Fight-or-Flight”) in response to stress (survival mechanism). With that being said, chronically elevated cortisol levels will lead to inadequate activity of your Parasympathetic Nervous System (“Rest-and-Digest”) due to the supremacy of the Sympathetic Nervous System—leading to a cluster of conditions such as improperly digestion of food, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance! . . To put this into perspective, when the body detects or is posed to a threat/stressful situation, one of the main jobs of cortisol is to increase the glucose concentration in the blood to make more energy readily available to muscles. Therefore, prolonged elevated cortisol levels result in sustained elevations of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) which can lead to type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance due to the fact that the body won't efficiently respond properly to insulin (remember, there's a "cap" to insulin secretion). . . There’s a cluster of problems that stem from chronically elevated cortisol levels, but I do my best to keep my post short and simple. If you need more information, feel free to DM me or comment below. Tomorrow I’ll be posting insightful tips to help combat prolonged elevated cortisol levels.

What is cortisol? . . Cortisol is often referred to as “the stress hormone” which is best known for helping fuel your body’s Sympathetic Nervous System (“Fight-or-Flight”) in response to stress (survival mechanism). For the purpose of this post, I’ll be highlighting the positive effects of (normal levels) cortisol which include regulation of blood sugar and insulin levels, and aid in fat, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism—to name a few. . . For example, during exercise, one of the main jobs of cortisol is to increase the glucose concentration in the blood to make more energy readily available to muscles. Therefore, cortisol levels remain elevated throughout exercise when the muscles create a demand for energy. Ensuring the regulation of energy by tapping into the body’s fat stores and delivering it to the working muscle and/or breaking down proteins into usable carbohydrates in the liver for fuel. . . Lastly, it should be noted that natural fluctuations of cortisol levels are peaked (highest) first thing in the morning and begin to decline afterward (second picture). Hypothetically, this is why the belief of fasted cardio is said to be beneficial for fat loss (IF normal levels) because as previously mentioned, cortisol will tap into the body’s fat stores to deliver energy to the working muscles.

Just like we can't out supplement a crap diet, we can't out exercise a crap lifestyle. Hell, even I wished it sometimes could (anyone else for those wild & crazy nights..?). Calories come from foods and beverages with carbs, fats, protein and alcohol, with different caloric values, 4, 9, 4, and 7, respectively. They can get filtered into a variety of cycles depending on our lifestyle, muscle mass, etc., and then our thyroid helps control that speed. **Here's the tricky part- blood sugar issues, where we tend to gain weight, hormone imbalance (e.g. high estrogen messes with thyroid), poor sleep, genetics, and other underlying health concerns that are causing issues in our body are jacking up our stress response to you guessed it- throw off our thyroid! **Further, the more we pay attention to nutrient dense foods that provide our body with the proper fuel, we'll naturally consume less calories (because we still need a deficit at the end of the day) & lower all that inflammation. Then if things are still not going accordingly, consider working with someone to tweak those ratios & calorie counts (yes, still a thing as drinking empty calories- aka where you're not full). Even doctors need doctors! :) #calories #listentoyourbody #eatyourmacros #knowyourbody #findyourdiet #knowyournutrients #fitness #motivation #findyourteam #notallaboutcalories #instahealth #food #health #chooseyourfood #healthyfats #stayaccountable #ownyouractions #eatyourprotein #thyroidhealth #nourishyourhormones #bloodsugarbalance #stresshormone #enhanceyourmetabolism #weight #weightloss #carb #eatclean #fitspo

ADRENAL FATIGUE & DIET ______________ Unfortunately if you have first developed #adrenalfatigue it can take anywhere from 6 months to two or even three years to heal all depending on how depleted you are. Depleted adrenal glands and #hormoneimbalance can cause a wide range of symptoms. From hot flashes and night sweats to skin conditions, hair thinning, brittle nails, mood swings, low libido , food cravings and painful periods ( I could go on with more). Gradual improvement and healing of your adrenals will lead to gradual improvement of above symptoms. ________________ When it comes to food though women are a bit silly ( sorry ladies we are). Many including myself think in the beginning the key to healing is a detox program and living off of vegetable juice. Wrong! One of the most common mistakes we make is to : * Eat too few calories. * Eat too few carbohydrates * Still be too stressed when we think we’re not. Why this matters : research suggests that reducing carbohydrates can in turn reduce T3 and T4 production in many people. This reduction will end up causing a dysregulation of our HPA axis . Now #cortisol also helps regulate our blood sugar which is why many health practitioners would advise adrenal fatigue sufferers to graze and eat regularly throughout the day. If you are too low or too high in blood sugar your need for cortisol will increase to keep the balance. But when you have adrenal fatigue your cortisol levels are already out of balance so once again you’re putting a demand on your adrenal glands. The less demand for cortisol production the more healing you’ll achieve. So ladies no deprivation eat your carbs with a smile and get enough of the healthy fats ! 💚🌱 . . #hormonetherapy #healing #happyhormones #functionalmedicine #chronicillness #naturalremedies #cannabiscommunity #cbd #cbdoil #healthygut #hormonebalance #hormoneimbalance #stress #stressless #stresshormone

Some of my favorite herbs, here in @yogitea are mint and licorice. Mint is a wonderful herb for digestion, aiding in an upset stomach or indigestion, as well as encouraging bile flow (helps us digest fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K). Licorice also helps our gut health (though you’ll find the deglycerrhized form which doesn’t affect blood pressure), and a powerful adrenal support herb improving energy levels by inhibiting breakdown of cortisol, our stress hormone. It’s also anti cancer, anti viral, great for our liver & heart health. #antiviral #antibacterial #heartdiseaseprevention #hormoneimbalance #hormonehealth #liverhealth #drinkyourtea #yogitea #licoricetea #minttea #adrenalfatigue #adrenalhealth #herbalmedicine #guthealth #improveenergy #botanicalmedicine #drinkyourherbs #cortisol #stresshormone #healthylivestyle #anticancer #sogoodforyou #thursdaythoughts #knowledgeispower #hormonesupport

Cortisol - a hormone students in health may have elevated pretty often 😅 This hormone, released by the adrenal glands, is essential for SURVIVAL as humans. What does it do? It helps to think of someone running away from a bear. With elevated cortisol, that person will probably concentrate better, increase their blood pressure and blood sugar (food for our organs to function - or run away!) Your pain sensitivity decreases in order to help with fight or flight situations and your immunity decreases as well. Ever gotten sick after a long week of exams?? It was probably because you had high cortisol 😉🤷‍♀️🤔

#RamadanTip How is lack of sleep correlated with #weight #gain or #loss? #SleepDeprivation Causes Weight Gain. The more sleep-deprived you are, the higher your levels of the #StressHormone #Cortisol, which increases your #Appetite. Though most research confirms temporary weight loss for most (which typically returns after Ramadan), studies conducted in volunteers in Saudi Arabia reported a significant increase in #caloric, #fat, #carbohydrate and #protein intake, as well as a significant increase in body weight, despite a significant reduction in meal frequency during Ramadan. This can be attributed to the result of  #excessiveeating during the night. Such excessive eating, particularly prior to sleep, leads to sleep disorders and increased acid reflux into the esophagus, which affects sleep quality. So if you wish to sleep well during Ramadan, you are argued to eat even more moderately during this month than during any other.

I was talking to someone the other day about life balance and stress. I gave her this analogy: -- Imagine you're at a cottage and decide to go swimming in a lake (warm water for me, please! haha). When you jump off the dock you get mentally and physically ready. You're psyched. You might even be excited. Or, you may be nervous. Either way, you need to jump. 🌊 -- Then you're in the water and in order to get back to the dock you need to swim. Let's say you need to swim a fair distance. It takes work, your muscles work hard. 🏊 -- When you get back to the dock you need to rest. How long do you need to rest? 30 min? An hour? ⛱ -- Let's say instead of resting, you jump off the dock again. Then swim again, maybe a bit farther. Then again. And again. Each time, one after the other without your rest on a lawn chair. ** After a while, you'll feel like you're drowning. Your body can't catch up to the amount of effort you need to keep going. ** This is how we deal with stress. We jump off the dock with work, deadlines, screaming kids, lack of sleep, taking care of family, etc etc. Each time, our body prepares to jump off the dock. Maybe we load up with caffeine or sugar to do it but we keep jumping. How much time in a lawn chair does your body need? 🤔🤔 📷 @christoffere #rishmawalji

Tbh.. this is the 3rd time I've written this out.. note to self: don't write big Instagram posts on shitty apps that close without warning 😣 Throwing a thought out there to be real ~ everytime I post something like this it terrifies me. I usually almost delete them. The only way I get myself to push post is by pretending no one I know will see this.. and hope like hell no one will hit me up about them in person 😂 But also because I have a small hope that someone out there needs to know that other people get it. So for those people: This place has a huge significance to me 🌿 The first time I was here, it was with one of my closest friends. The type of friendship where you can say anything and everything. That can withstand busy spells and life's distractions. 🌹 The last time I was here I was broken, confused, angry and alone. With the brutal truth of reality setting in. That friend is really gone. I thought I knew loneliness. Those who've experienced times of anxiety and depression only know this too well. The past couple of months have been difficult and tbh a bit scary. Slipping back into the negative thinking that used to rule my life. My brain was telling me I had no one. I went back to the me who withdraws socially, loses hope and considered moving home to reset for the 3rd time... The good news is that I am choosing to stick it out. I'm figuring out that I had people all along and most of my isolation was self imposed, all part of the vicious cycle that is mental illness. I think my biggest take away I want people to get from this is that you should always challenge your negative thinking. Your brain is NOT trustworthy in these times and... you do not have to be alone. Looking back I had so many offers of help, so many people willing to listen or hang or just be there and my mind screwed me over everytime, telling me it wasn't true. I'm still learning, but so so thankful for these legends. I'll finish on an interesting thought: a crazy study I read about recently, that when someone feels truly alone, without a real connection, they have as much cortisol in their system as someone who's been physically attacked!? Worth pondering ❤🌹🌿👩‍🔬

The human mind is so dumb 😩 • I’m at a point in my training where I don’t know how to rest. I’ve built up the habit of working out everyday, and sometimes I worry that if I take a break, then I’ll snowball back into not working out. Odd isn’t it? I feel like most people struggle to get to the gym, yet I struggle to keep myself away from the gym. It’s hard because I don’t feel like many people can relate to this particular struggle or don’t think it’s a big deal, but it mentally takes a huge toll on me. • I know it’s silly, but it’s still a thought that I have often. We all have stupid thoughts like this that make no sense when we really think about them. If I take a moment to think it out, to talk it out, it makes me feel so much better. It’s just a matter of whether or not I allow these dumb thoughts to have control over me. I struggle so much, so often, but I try to reevaluate these stupid thoughts and that seems to make all the difference for me. Our mind is something we have to train and work on just like we do our bodies. • So with that being said, I’ve been doing a lot of research about what rest does for the body, and also about the concept of overtraining. I’ve found out that the body can’t tell the difference between stress from exercising and regular stress. Stress has a drastic effect on your cortisol levels, which has affects many things in the body. It increases our heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, respiration, muscle tension. It also shuts down some of our bodies systems that aren’t needed. It turns out that that just like anything balance is key. Too much of a good thing is actually unhealthy. • So here’s to respecting my body and telling my mind to fuck off you’re taking a damn rest.

It’s crazy how much stress takes a toll on your body. This past month I have been overloaded with stress and it definitely showed. In my mood, weight, skin & sleep routine. - - See, when the body’s stressed out it makes more cortisol (a stress hormone). This can lead more cravings, bloating, breakouts, irritability & more. - - Since I’ve gotten the majority of my work done for the end of the semester, these past few days I’ve been prioritizing taking more breaks, enjoying this weather and just trying to de-stress in general. My sleep has already improved & my bloating has significantly gone down. - - It’s inevitable to avoid stress in life, so when it does come around, knowing how to tackle it is key. Meditate, be around people you love, go for a walk, exercise, read a book, just do something you enjoy. Goes to show ya mental health is just as important as physical.

Sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, and stress hormone cortisol are derived from cholesterol. . Our liver can produce cholesterol if not taken from food. But liver can be easily sluggish if it’s overwhelmed with autointoxication, busy digesting, environmental endocrine disrupters, and more. . If there isn’t enough cholesterol available to produce pregnenolone, which is precursor to progesterone, then testosterone, estrogen, and stress hormone will be depleted as well since they are all converted from pregnenolone. . Testosterone is primarily the male sex hormone that provides a sense of power and control. It is responsible for sex drive, energy, building muscle, boosting mood, etc. . Estrogen is the hormone that provides the essence of femininity. Estrogen is responsible for bone density, smooth and softness of the skin, moist in vagina, etc. . When hormones are out of balance, our vitality and reproductive ability decline. . No matter how much organic food you eat, how many supplements you take, how much exercise you do, your physical and emotional health won’t be its potential unless your hormones are balanced. . . . #balanced_within #hormoneimbalance #hormonebalance #estrogen #estrogendominance #estradiol #testosterone #androgens #cortisol #stresshormone #cholesterol #progesterone #pregnenolone #sexhormones #gapsdiet #hormones #holisticliving #holisticlife #quaileggs #allergyfree #yyj #islandlife #eattoheal #foodasmedicine

True! Food was my first addiction thanks to #steroids ! I developed a very unhealthy relationship with food after a few rounds of #prednisone at 7-9yo. Steroids sharply increase #cortisol levels (that lovely #stresshormone ) and cause your body to constantly craaaavvvee and craaavee comfort food. I wasn't old enough to understand this process and ate everything in sight and when the fridge ran dry I'd eat ice chips or just mayo sandwhiches because I never felt satisfied. Roids make you bloat AND make you eat so it's a double edged sword of medication induced fatness. In a short time I became #thefatkid and immediately learned how cruel the world is to overweight people. Other kids shunned me, treated me like I had the plague, mocked me and unfriended me right quick. My big brother and cousin were on the ready with every fat joke in the book. My adult family members tisktisked amd demanded I diet and return to normal - never concerned that it wasn't my own doing. After all- i was only an uneducated, impulse control lacking child and I was being guided by side effects, not my own free will. But they didn't seem to realize or care. I was fat and it was shameful to be fat so just DONT BE FAT, alright!? Food is still my go-to drug when I feel #stressed but thankfully I've also learned to exercise and what foods to eat and which foods to leave alone when I'm like that. I don't always utilize this knowledge to the fullest but at least I have it. 7yo me didn't have a clue or any help attaining a clue. . . #rheumatismproblems #rheumatoidarthritis #majordepressivedisorder #majoraccomplishments #juvenilerheumatoidarthritis #momlife #chronicallyillmom #chronicallyill

Not only does CAFFEINE make you pull ridiculous faces..... but it could also be CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR WEIGHT GAIN..... 😱😳☕️☕️ . . I touched on the detriments of post workout caffeine, but these hormonal imbalances aren’t limited to the post workout window. . . Caffeine elevates your CORTISOL levels, a stress hormone that can lead to WEIGHT GAIN if chronically elevated. . . An imbalance of CORTISOL will: 😈 increase the risk of insulin resistance 😈 raise your blood glucose which then crashes causing you to crave sugar laden food 😈 impair your ability to burn fat 😈 increase the rate of fat storage, particularly around the waistline. . . Maybe time to swap some of those copious cups of the good stuff for a decaffeinated version or herbal tea. . . Also worth considering that the optimal time to consume caffeine is between 7-9am when your cortisol levels will have naturally dropped. Perfect time for your daily cup ☕️

Adrenal fatigue is a real issue - it is when the brain isn’t speaking to the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands release several hormones and one of them is your stress hormone cortisol. • Cortisol is supposed to be higher in the morning to wake you up and gradually lower as the day goes on to ensure you have a restful sleep. • Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include drained, anxious, depression, irritable, mental fatigue and cravings for salty foods. • If you’re feeling any of these symptoms - makes sure to pay close attention to your diet. Include copious amounts of fats to optimize brain function and decrease inflammation while balancing hormones. Cruciferous veggies are your new best friend, as they contain lots of sulphur to enhance methylation.

Saturday Vibes! Trust the process. Not happy with where Im at right now and trying to stay mentally focused which is HUGE to any growth. Mental stress can hinder progress greatly. Elevates CORTISOL levels, helps control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism, help reduce inflammation and aids in estrogen/testosterone balance along with others... learn to balance cortisol or supplement to knock it down and preventing crazy spikes. Mind Set Is Everything! Just because you go to the gym daily doesn't mean your mentally into your reps, sets to really change your physique. #mensphysique #nutrition #allnatural #trust #the #process #sculpting #cortisol #stresshormone #balalnce #mindsetiseverything #manningfitness

When your sister's a nurse stress is definite and the loss of a loved one is inevitable. We are forever changed after the sudden loss of our father. Our hearts are broken and our kidneys were killing us. An ER visit later diagnosed me with broken heart syndrome and adrenal fatigue. When the body is under stress the body produces cortisol otherwise known as stress hormone. This can play havoc on your cardiovascular system. Incl: fatigue, weight gain, high blood pressure, anxiety and depression to name a few. When you're so consumed with stress, shock & grief you don't have time to breath. Let alone exercise, or go get a massage. In time I will start to do all the right things but this Cortistop saved me and is a must! If you are stressed you need this in your life. It helps the body maintain its Natural Balance and harmony and supports the glandular system. I'm so blessed to have such a good support system with a loving sister that's a nurse & chooses to be a Young Living Advocate. She always make sure we have just the right things that our bodies need. Thanks for Saving me🙌🙏💖🦅 #cortistopforthetest #blessed #health #nutrition #nursesknowbest #meditation #breath #excersise #anxiety #depression #lossofalovedone #lovemyfamily #sisterlylove #youngliving #cortistop #adrenalfatigue #cortisol #stress #stresshormone #silentkiller

When you immerse yourself in all things “health and fitness” I think it becomes really easy to focus on the “fitness” part and to often let the “health” aspect go by the way side. Truth is they go hand in hand and there are so many facets to health that we often forget about. Recently I’ve been super motivated to smash my fitness goals and nourish my body but I’ve honestly just been emotionally and physically exhausted. I think we, not just as fitness junkies, but as human beings, forget to take time to look after our mental health (as cliche as that sounds). The thoughts we conjure up so often lead to stress, and stress is an absolute KILLER on the body. So to reduce those pesky Cortisol levels (stress hormone) and spike Serotonin, try adding in some “mental health care” into your fitness regime; it may be as simple as meditation, reading a book, or going to your favourite place with a friend (like I did yesterday) . . . . My ❤️. #Repost @health.beat with @get_repost ・・・ Have you hugged a dog today? Research about the benefits of pet ownership comes from the American Heart Association, #PurdueUniversity, the #JournalofPsychotropicMedicine and others. In general, the studies show that owning a dog may fight heart disease. Owning a dog has a positive impact on blood pressure, which is one of the main factors in heart attack and stroke, according to Dr. Boyden. The American Heart Association reports a link between pet ownership and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Studies also show you’ll be more likely to survive a heart attack if you have a dog. A study published in the journal BMC Public Health said the average dog owner walks 22 minutes more per day than those who don’t own a dog. Daily walks have lots of added benefits, from controlling chronic conditions to burning weight and improving moods. They add purpose. Having a dog or any other pet can give you a reason to get going in the morning. Size doesn’t matter. In fact, cats, horses and birds can all have a similar effect. Even tiny pets—hamsters, mice, fish, insects—can imbue you with a sense of purpose. In one study, elderly people were asked to care for a cage of five crickets. After eight weeks, the people who had the crickets in their homes were less depressed and had better cognitive function than those in the control group. Additional benefits of owning a pet includes relieving stress. “Being around pets, and dogs in particular, actually changes your body at a hormonal level,” Dr. Skillings said. Of course, it’s not a cure-all. “Getting a dog won’t cure depression or clinical anxiety, but it certainly can help.” Pet ownership also reduces loneliness. Dogs provide unconditional love. They’re caring, excited to see you and glad to be by your side. Need to talk? “Dogs are good listeners and they’re not going to argue with you,” Dr. Skillings said. Dogs improve sociability. There’s also the added benefit of the camaraderie among dog owners. “Having a dog can connect people to other pet owners, which can reduce isolation, too,” Dr. Skillings said. The bottom line? If you’re thinking about a pet—and you’re ready to take on the expense and the responsibility—go for it. What’s more healthful than a multivitamin and as beneficial as exercise? Fido. Or Cooper. Or Bella. Or any other fur baby. Medical research shows that owning a dog is one of the best prescriptions for reducing your health risk. And dog-owning doctors agree. “People who live alone but have a dog have a 33 percent reduced risk of death and an 11 percent reduced rate of cardiovascular disease,” according to Thomas Boyden, MD, MS, Spectrum Health program director of preventive cardiology. Dr. Boyden owns Juju B, a miniature pinscher-Chihuahua mix. He knows from personal experience that dog ownership can also reduce stress and improve your mood. “Getting a pet actually works faster than psychiatric drugs,” said Jared Skillings, PhD, ABPP, Spectrum Health chief of psychology. “The health benefits of playing with a pet begin in just five to 25 minutes, while psychotropic drugs may take weeks to become effective.” Dr. Skillings’ household includes two cats and three dogs.
