Starting tomorrow I am ditching caffeine for st least 3 days if not 21 to allow my Cortisol to Reset. Lord knows my Adrenal Fatigue issues involved fluctuations in my Cortisol, which caused blood sugar stabilization issues as a result. The sugar issues resolved BUT I am not sleeping soundly lately. Hence my motivation to FINALLY ditch caffeine. The Dr. Requested back in November but “when the student is ready to learn” finally kicked in 😉. Quality sleep can have a huge impact on your weight and metabolism. I always tend to go up a few pounds each summer and I am convinced that is because I lose 1-2 hours a sleep with a work schedule change. So my body is currently off its rhythm. So here it goes! I will enjoy a herbal tea tomorrow AM! Anyone else ditch coffee? Results?!

One of the most common things I see in exercise is women stressing out over their progress and pushing themselves in an unsustainable way to look like a picture on Instagram. . . What people might not know, is that when we stress out, we trigger Cortisol (a stress hormone) and that creates a whole bunch of reactions in the body that won’t help your fitness journey, especially if weight loss is one of your goals. . . The body assumes (in its cave woman ways) that you’re in danger and might not get to eat. Survival mode kicks in so you will actually hold weight. . . This is why our mindset in exercise is fundamental. Have goals, but do not apply extra pressure to your routine. Just do your routine, and do it as consistently as you can and the results will come. . If you lead with kindness and quiet determination you can’t go wrong. So if you feel yourself stressing over how you look and your exercise, step away from the mirror, get outside and look at the sky and the trees and take a giant breath. I took this lab test towards the end of July. It was an at home saliva + blood test. Tested for hormones + thyroid levels + cortisol. I had to fill 4 different tubes with saliva at different times throughout the day. The blood test was a single finger prick done in the morning. The results are in: • Elevated cortisol 3 out of the 4 times of day. 👎🏼 • Low Progesterone. Most likely due to being converted to cortisol. 👎🏼 • Thyroid, DHEA, Estrogen, Testosterone were all within normal ranges. 👍🏼 I will do a separate post about treatment plan.

If you saw my post from yesterday, I mentioned how stress can cause your body to go into fight or flight mode and mess with your hormones. Well that hormone is Cortisol! Cortisol is released when you are under stress and when you have an infection...I didn't know about the latter but it makes sense. There are a number of ways this stress hormone can affect you including low libido and high blood pressure but one of the most common is you may physically see is that little bit of extra belly fat. I speak from personal experience on this one. When my fitness and nutrition game are on and I look in the mirror and can see that little pooch, I know I need to take a moment and figure out what may be causing me stress. I also realized that it's the reason why I crave potato chips and all that salt! Oh the carbs. When you're stressed, your immune system is compromised and can't work as it should to protect you from illness or infection thus the reason you may get colds at odd times in the year or they take much longer to go away. Did you know 80% of your immune system is in your gut?? Another thing to note is this...Everyone handles stress differently. Some people use food, some people shop, some people drink. If drinking is your way of coping with stress, consuming more than you normally would can also increase you cortisol levels. Here are some ways to lower your cortisol level: 1. Get plenty of rest...you can't function properly when you don't get enough sleep. 2. Proper nutrition... Reduce the cravings with a balanced diet of fruits, veg, protein or veggie options and plenty of water. 3. Exercise...it's a great way to relieve stress but don't overdo it and put extra stress on your body! Yoga is a great option. 4. Mindfulness...Relax, meditate, read. These are just a few ways to lower your cortisol levels and help manage stress! Birthday celebrations two days straight but in a relaxing way. Spa date with one of my lovely besties Kat who whisked me off to dinner at Roxie where I indulged in Seafood bliss and could even drink one innocent glass of wine! Then a full on sporadic day with the baby brother ( from another mother) sleeping in until 11:00 ,biking around town , soaking up the sun, swimming , wakeboarding and checking in on the horses in the evening. All in all relaxing, active, outdoors, laughs, heart to hearts and joy! I am beyond smashed today but I can sleep in, curl up with a movie in this wonderful cooler weather. Easy peasy lunch. I have mentioned that I thrive on a plant based diet - however once in a while my body says “chicken” and I buy some and then I can go a long while without meat again. I call it intuitive eating. I refuse to eat when I’m not hungry and I refuse to be on some strict diet regime whether you wanna call it vegan, paleo or RAW. We all have very different bodies genetically and some thrive on foods others can’t go close to. For instance the nightshade family still makes me tired as if I’ve eaten gluten - so weird but then I know I need to stay clear of too many tomatoes, Aubergine and “ordinary” potatoes. I can’t have too many eggs either that’s also something I eat and then go without for a while. What I CAN eat is steamed green veggies like broccoli , spinach and kale galore with a chickpea or some other scrumptious bean or lentil. I sleep better, digest better, don’t get brain fogs and have loads of energy. It’s been over a year since my #adrenalfatigue crash ( mid June). Time flies I’m still not there yet but at least I can do a lot without being wiped out if I’m just conscious about my energy! Summer .... it’s a lifestyle. Energy is back I am ready to hit the gym again. Sometimes relapses come because there’s something you’re not paying attention to. Hug a pillow.. Day two - it helps. It has to be releasing some serious oxytocin because it’s just like giving yourself a big hug! I suggest you to hug a pillow today. My Depression levels are much better and I was at the stables yesterday so I’m guessing that’s why! Quinto, the horse I ride has had a minor injury of his own a month back from fooling around in the paddock so we have been riding intervals and building up strength. Yesterday we could finally canter again and boy of boy does cantering activate your core and those inner thighs! 😂 He has a big bold stride for a relatively sleek and sporty frame - it’s awesome! Also my lower back pain is looooving being back in the saddle again. Despite the fact that I’ve been so diligent with my strength training before this relapse including lower back and leg exercises riding just takes your lower back stability to another level because a horse’s movements activated every little ligament and muscle in your body! Bloody hot today but I’ve been wearing sweaters because I’m inside in a nice draft. Now that I don’t have hot flashes anymore it’s like a gift to actually be able to feel cold in the midst of summer! All those years where I loathed summer and all due to hormonal imbalance! Mind boggling I tell you... I never eat beef or pork simply because I’ve never been able to digest it properly but I will occasionally have chicken and I’ve always loved my seafood! I find that I thrive on plant based protein like lentils and beans of all sorts but we need to switch it up especially as a #celiac warrior! _____________ I used to have strict eating rules in my 20’s so silly! Now I eat what I want and when I want it. Deprivation is the root of all evil it’s not that one piece of chocolate or creamy gluten-free plate of pasta that will cause havoc it’s your rules! When it’s bright AF and your body is confused because it’s really 4am on the west coast!🙈 #redeyeproblems 😴 Sleep is necessary. Don’t underestimate getting enough! I used to think I was ok getting 4-5 hrs of sleep a night, not realizing I wasn’t letting my body heal and recover. 😴 Not getting enough sleep puts stress on your bod!!!! LEARNING CURVE I’m relapsing but also having what Oprah calls “aha moments” ( I love Oprah - who doesn’t). __________________ My aha moment is that I am experiencing and able to WITNESS this time how #depression and #anxiety are SO intertwined with #adrenalfatigue . Intellectually I already knew that but there’s a difference in knowing and feeling it in your body and it actually comforts me! _________________ This morning I was tired, fed up and depressed like : “kill me, kill me now depressed” (I clearly should’ve done theatre) 😂 totally in the “depths of despair” BUT! I got myself up had a shower stopped the ugly voice telling me how my body will never be the same and that I’ll be trapped here forever, made myself a green smoothie went for a short brisk walk, breathed and got to work. _________________ Guess what it is now noon and the depression as lifted. I am in NO WAY happy-go-lucky right now but I’m neutral ! That fucking voice in our tired out adrenal head needs to get out and go to hell! We adrenals are doing the best we can and I am not a great human being right now at all but I’m still me! Does that make me unworthy ? ____________ I help so many people through work going through hardship and pain why I’m a not aloud to have a few tough times too? Everyday you are affected or influenced by chemistry.⚛ What happens to YOUR body chemistry when YOU wake up? Short answer= Melatonin decreases & Cortisol increases🌞 What the heck does Melatonin do? Melatonin is a hormone that is responsible for making you drowsy. Its precursor is tryptophan (think turkey, gobble gobble). 🦃The amount of melatonin produced depends on the activity of serotonin-N-acetyltransferase (SNAT), which peaks when it is dark outside. Exposure to light through the retina induces a signal to the suprachiasmatic nucleus which signals—> pineal gland which signals—> Break down of SNAT. At night SNAT is phosphorylated (phosphate group attached to protein (or other organic molecule). This prevents SNAT from being broken down and thus increases melatonin production. (notice how I used the word thus so fluidly). What about Cortisol bro?🤔 On average, 30 minutes after waking up from a solid nights sleep, your cortisol levels will be at their highest. This is an avg increase of 50% in the blood stream & is called the cortisol awakening response-CAR (it feels like a car hitting you in the morning am I right?) You may know cortisol as the “stress hormone.” It is theorized that Cortisol is released in the mornings when you wake up in preparation of facing the stress of waking up. By noon, cortisol will fall to less than half their peak (this is why you may want to reach for the 2nd cup of coffee). Cortisol continues to drop to very low levels at night and stay low during sleep hours. Problem sleeping @ night? This could be attributed to screen or room lighting. Maybe switch the colors on your screens to more warming tones to decrease the amount of blue light you are exposed to and dim lights around 8pm. Blue light has been linked to the slowing or complete halt of melatonin production. If you like to have a good workout at night, you like to jump on twitter in a political rage, or maybe you just cant stop thinking about work stress, your cortisol levels will rise and may prevent you from being able to sleep.😴 Did you know about these hormone fluctuations and how you can impact them? When our cortisol levels are through the roof constantly, our bodies begin to store fat and break down muscle. When you’re puffy and you know it! _____________________ It is CRAZY how one day your face and body can feel and be in total radiance and than BAM! You’re puffy and tired all over again! _________________ Adrenals I know you’re feeling me here!! I have been drinking plenty of tea and have been hydrating in lemon water and coconut water, which I discovered is in super close reach. Do you experience the same odd ball relapses? I’m getting suuuuuuper tired of these occasional setbacks I was in such a groove y’all! Then when you get tired your groove kinda ends in the mud.
