We share a lot of beautiful happy #queerfarmer faces on this page, and we know that a lot of you wouldn’t be doing this work if you weren’t proud of it, didn’t love it. But it’s certainly not all sunshine smiles, and Pony’s last post for @countryqueers was too good to not pass along. Check out the whole takeover for more! .
“Animals don't know what weekends are, and they certainly don't exist for livestock farmers. There is no 'TGIF' or 'Mondays, amiright?!'. I wanted to share so much more of my day with you. I wanted to show you the hens in a raptor feeding-frenzy, how silly the little burro looks trailing behind the giant old draft horse, how precious the lambs are when they all play chase. I wanted to share with you my story of why and how I became a farmer, how I wanted to say 'fuck you' to Big Ag and how much I've learned, how many perspectives I've gained over these past two years in operation. I wanted to go on a ridiculous rant dispelling common phrases and myths, like, whoever came up with 'count sheep to fall asleep' is an asshole and certainly wasn't a shepherd. Counting sheep is no cup of chamomile tea. And, 'the rooster crows at dawn'? No, he doesn't. He crows whenever he damn well pleases. He'll crow at 3am if it tickles his fancy. But now it's well past 11pm and there's still a lamb in the cooler that needs deboning, grinding and packing and all I can think to say is this: I own three pairs of shoes; riding boots, muck boots and scuffs. I make the choice every morning to put those boots on and work myself hard. I may not feel it every moment of every day, but I'm so proud of what I do and at the end of each long day, when my feet are soggy and sore, when my hands are stiff and my eyes are tired, nothing feels more like bliss than a pair of lambskin scuffs.
This is Pony Jacobson with #sugarfield posting for @countryqueers. Goodnight to y'all and sleep well.
