This glorious specimen is Bain!! Now I’m not meant to have favourites, but this guy is pretty hard not to fall in love with!! Bain struggles and barks when left alone. There are a few factors, he has just moved home and so he may be struggling to settle in. He generally doesn’t settle anyway, he constantly stays busy and so is not comfortable fully dropping his guard at the best of times. He’s also got his loving family pretty well trained, having learnt to bark for attention. Combine all of the above, and it kind of explains it all.
Our approach is to manage the environment to make him feel safe and comfortable so he learns he can drop his guard at home. Encourage calm and settling behaviours in the home and provide plenty of enrichment o help him decompress at times he gets agitated.
Nothing for free, it’s not about removing everything from him, but creating communication patterns that work for us as well as the dog. Consistently ask and reward for calm behaviours, while avoiding rewarding pushy behaviours.
