When I applied for my first yoga teacher training with @ @ I was asked, what is your least favourite pose? Why? For me, Wheel or Urdhva Dhanurasana / Chakrasana is The Doozy. My background is athletics, tennis and hockey so there’s not really a flexible bone in my body 😂😬😕
Physically, I often feel all jammed up and stuck in my spine, shoulders and wrists as I try my best to find sound alignment in this pose. I have to work so hard to stop my breath from becoming shallow and strained. Emotionally this pose can be so confronting as your front body and heart feels like it is literally being blasted open. But oh, this pose. This is such an important asana, an elixir for those of us who spend a lot of time sitting.
For the rest of this year in my Hatha / Vinyasa classes we are going to be working towards it, in some way, step by step. There are so many components and EVERYONE can benefit from starting the journey towards this shape.
Lovingly opening up the shoulders, chest and upper back. Learning to keep the low back spacious and free, drawing the flesh of the bum down towards the backs of the knees. Firing up the legs and thighs and finding the strength to keep the knees from splaying out. Gently massaging into the hip flexors and belly. There is an abundance of magic to discover in wheel. The ultimate backbend. The ultimate energiser. Freedom. 💥💥💥
Join me and see where your practice might be after just a few weeks of dedicated focus, discipline and mindful attention.
Note: this is not me in the pic OBVIOUSLY 😅 @ 👌🏼 @ xox
