Niner Estate 19.05.18 Paso Robles.
Oxymoronic. Deep & dark, yet bright. .
This is how I describe the wines of this family winemaker.
Tasted quite a diverse range but the ones below drew attention. Tough fight between the Malbec & Syrah Reserve 2014.
**Malbec 2014 Such a big & dark wine, yet so bright
Aromas get interesting - funky mushrooms, chocolate, wax/crayons
This wine is big, opulent, deep & dark, yet the amazing acidity comes into turn the lights on! Lots of grip & amazing structure. Opulent and juicy dark fruit.
**Syrah Reserve 2014 *** My Fave
One whiff, and you know this wine has to be paired with a big juicy fat pepper steak
Aromas of black pepper steak & mud. Time opens up to reveal blueberries & licorice
Again, a deep & dark wine with bright acidity with very silky velvet tannins. Smokey BBQ.
**Fogcatcher 2014, Niner's flagship & Bordeaux Blend
On the nose, Sarsi soda, inky, chewy ripe cherries. A beautiful & attractive soft nose.
A deep & dark wine, even with some meanness. Soft on the front palate, but aggressive tannins on the finish. High acidity. Too young but definitely a cellar wine.
Watermelon kiwi fruit-bomb, Ripe strawberries, rose, cherries, waxy wine
Salty, ripe strawberries, watermelon, good grip - not a challenging rose.
Loved the tertiary aromas of umami, soy sauce, plum, eggs, mint, lavender, chocolate
Fantastic acidity, good structure, hand brewed coffee, chocolate & spice, graphite, good grip.
Reserve Super Paso 2015 , super Tuscan style.
Sangiovese Barbera, these 2 wines were cofermented together, making up 5 blends,
Chalky, bright red fruit, mineralic, soft floral white fruit, smoke
In the mouth, texture is soft and silky Juicy, - very structured but refined.
