Introducing the female, Katipo spider.
This deadly little native hottie is a member of the Black Widow family, which also includes the Australian Redback.
Katipo translated from its Maori name into English, means, Night Stinger! How fucking cool is that?
Picture early New Zealand Maori, asleep on their grass Matt's, on the ground. Not hard to guess how the name, Night Stinger came about.
The female of the species is is gracious host. Guy Katipo comes down for a bootie call, and miss Katipo chases him off a few times when he bangs his front legs on her web. Well eventually she gives it up for her guy, and when the rain and clouds have passed, ( Jappanesse, look it up) 😂 the guy goes to the edge of the web, and uses his front feet to clean himself. Miss Katipo, well satisfied, dosent eat him like some breeds, and she can give birth for the next two years from that one mating. They live on our coastlines, usually on the land side of the beach. They are found on both coastlines, on both the North and South Islands, but only go as far South as Greymouth on the West, and Christchurch on the East Coast.
They are not real aggressive, but their bite will kill children and the elderly. In saying that, it's extremely rare, and I don't recall any deaths in my lifetime. I have a few living in my shed.
These guys are now on our endangered list.
