53mm X-Pert tips for Black and White Portraiture.
Inspiration is the Intention
Here are the first of a set of entries that Knut has picked out as being great exemplars from the current collection of photographs from our final contest so far.
They exhibit the sorts of shots that present a depth to portraiture that invites the viewer in as well as saying so much about its subject. In some cases, there is also strong reference to the environment captured too and the relationship between the both of them.
These two shots, the first from @grumpyxtrastout and the second from @petewands demonstrate this dimension to portrait photography.
To help you further with your entries, here is the first instalment of photography tips from Knut to assist you getting the most out of your entries for the remainder of the competition. For more info check out the 53mm bio.
A portrait should represent a meeting. That’s what makes it a portrait and not just a picture of a person. I as a viewer have to feel that I meet this person. Therefore the photographer has to “meet” the person and catch that with the camera, so I as viewer forget about the photographer and believe this person in the picture is talking to me! This is for me fundamental and at the same time THE point that photographers most often miss.
