“I've always been a passionate boarder- started skateboarding with my guy friends in highschool and would snowboard in the off season. I've always loved the beach and knew I wanted to try surfing at some point in my life. Strangely enough, I had won a trip through my college alumni anywhere in the continental US back in 2015. I of course had to pick California! I chose San Diego and knew this was my opportunity to take my first lesson. I took my first lesson in Coronado Island area and that's where I fell in love with the ocean and surfing. I've since taken a few more lessons in the Outer Banks and hope to one day live near a beach!” - Laurie Choe @laurie_lei #theoceanisfemale

"Oochh. I have a many wipeout stories.I like to charge myself, so I have a few crazy ones. One of them happened in Mentawaii 2 years ago. I'd been surfing in Lance's Right (HTC) and couldnt make a barrel, got wiped out and suddenly sat on reef. Surfers call that reef "surgeon table.' So it was knee high level water, whitewash from sets, strong current, I couldn't paddle or even move from that place, and for few minutes I was "sitting " on reef. Hahh, I got many scratches on my ass from that wipe out. Today I have a small scar from that day and photo with my scratchy ass in many Instagram accounts." - Galimova Chulpan @chuliefox #theoceanisfemale

• Let’s stop complaining that we have no time! There is nothing we have to do - we choose at every moment. Re-evaluate what is truly important to you, make time for the little things in life; have less clothes, use less dishes, tend the garden, help a stranger, play in the sun... . A great article written recently about overcoming surf fears and anxiety, by @surfgirlmag speaking with @kernowsurfgirl: “What advice do you have for anyone else who may be feeling anxious about surfing? ‘Spend as much time in the water as you can – I can’t stress it enough. Surf with people that you feel comfortable with but who are confident in the water. They will encourage you and inspire you to push yourself outside your comfort zone. Book a one-to-one surf lesson where you can focus on your fears/areas where you want to build confidence. Having an expert by your side will help to push yourself – you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve! Also, push yourself independently but within reason. There’s no point scaring yourself senseless but if you don’t push yourself, you won’t progress. If you’re scared of paddling out in bigger surf, start small and gradually work up to it. It won’t seem as scary and over time, you’ll tackle waves that you never imagined without really thinking about it.’...” Very well said, and something people should talk about more openly! . . . #thefear #surfanxiety #openup #surfwithfriends #womenempowerment #womensupportingwomen #surfgirl #surfergirl #gurfer #sisterhood #surfsisterhood #theoceanisfemale #slideladyslide #surfchick #womenwhosurf #vitaminsea #motherocean #goSLO

“There are so many things I love about surfing. I don't have enough time to go surfing and I’m not very good at it...but when someone tells me to think of an happy place I just imagine myself sitting on a board in the middle of the ocean with this deep silence surrounding me, salt water covering my skin and the setting sun heating my body, while the sky turns from blue to pink and purple. In that moment I feel nothing but a strong feeling of freedom and love for this world.” - Sophie Pramotton #theoceanisfemale

- Teresa Zafra @surferachoquera #theoceanisfemale

There are many layers to the ocean. Wavering temperaments that span from calm to stormy, beautiful on the surface while mysterious and filled with life deep down within. We are drawn to her. We challenge her. We find freedom in her presence. Yet we respect her powers We need to understand the magic that comes from being female. (Pt. 2) “I live and breathe for two things, my family and surfing. It makes me a better human, wife and mother. I recently created a new career for myself working remotely so I make my own hours, I get to surf every morning, work in the afternoon and hang out with my husband and son in the evenings. The ocean inspires my creativity in my art as well. I can honestly say I am living my ideal life right now.” - Danielle Black Lyons @salty_sol_artworks #theoceanisfemale

(Pt.1) “The stereotypical surfer girl image has never resonated with me. I can't relate to her, none of my friends look like her or dress like her. She doesn't represent my idea of surfing. Surfing is squeezing your ass into a wetsuit that's still a little damp from the last session, it's bumming sunscreen off your buddy and all she has is some white zinc and you look like a mime in the lineup. It's not always pretty, certainly not sexy (except when I do a hair flip, that's always on point). There is camaraderie and laughs, there's heckling, drop ins and wipe-outs, stingrays assassin's and injuries. It's the hardest most humbling sport in the world. I will surf until the day I die and it won't always be pretty, but it will be real." - Danielle Black Lyons @salty_sol_artworks 📸 @rszot #theoceanisfemale

“I’d like to think surfing will have a much wider and more diverse and inclusive community. Often all we see in the media of women’s surfing are people who fit into this cultural beauty ideal, we’ve ended up with a bit of a monoculture. Change is happening and I can’t wait to see new role models emerging. The great thing with the internet is if you look hard enough you’ll find it, and I hope I can start to use my platforms to give a voice to women who don’t necessarily fit into the little box the mainstream media promotes. There are women surfing in Gaza, Palestine, Haiti, Senegal, India. All over the world, resilient women from different races and religions, women with disabilities, women from trans and non binary communities. I think that these women being given an equal platform will provide the role models needed for more and more young girls from diverse backgrounds to start surfing. I’d also like to think the aim won’t be “to surf like a man”, which was the most praised thing you could aim for in my younger days as a female surfer. We are different to men, and I believe part of equality is celebrating our differences and embracing femininity.” - Sophie Hellyer @sophiehellyer 📸 @surfaroundireland #theoceanisfemale

“Surfing and traveling have always been a major, major priority in my life.  It’s what fuels my fire. That did not change when I became a mother: I still loved surfing and adventuring. But even after my body recuperated from giving birth, my mind was plagued with fear and anxiety. I was scared of surfing anything over 2ft. I went to Bali where I surfed Uluwatu and Bingin just a year earlier and was so paralysed in fear that I barely surfed.  I broke down. That moment was a big turning point for me. I started reading extensively about the psychology of fear and training my body and mind to handle challenging surf conditions. I swam, I visualised, I held my breath.  This picture was from a couple of years later when I was surfing 4-6 foot waves in Sumatra at @surfingvillage and absolutely loving it.” - Audrey Hills @seaheartssurf @surfstokedmoms #theoceanisfemale 📷@surfingvillage

“During my first job placement was in Bengkulu, Sumatera, I was so sad and lonely because this is the first time in my life I have to live alone far from my family. But then I saw people surf so I borrow their board then try to surf, then I bought some board. I was the only local woman that surf. I was a slow learner, sometimes other surfer underestimate me that they said I would never stand up on a shortboard, but I keep trying and I proof that they're wrong. And I make lot of new friends that feel like family from surfing… I think more women are interesting in surfing in 10 years. And it’s not restrictable even women with hijab can surf. I saw some of my friends surf wearing hijab. I also wanna wearing hijab one day to fulfill my duty due to my religion. And thank God now there are a lot of good hood brands that it won't get screwed up by quite powerful waves.” - Khoirun Nisa Aulia @lasagna111 #theoceanisfemale 📷 @maikelenjel

“Since I began surfing to now, women’s surfing has grown so much. There are always girls in the lineup and sometimes when I surf it’s all girls! I love that. I’m not a big follower of competitive surfing but I do hope that women can have an equal share of whatever spotlight is given to the guys. But most of all I hope that more men can give respect to women surfers in their own lineups. I think every woman surfer has experienced some sort of sexism in the lineup, whether its a guy consciously deciding to drop in on them because they don’t think they will make a wave or having a guy paddle inside of you or around you to get priority. Just general bad etiquette directed towards women. That’s the worst and I always make sure to call a guy out on it if they do it!” - Carly Cappelluzzo @carly.marisa @kaiindiejewelry #theoceanisfemale 📷 @adamkingphoto

"My best surf moment must have been in the Arctic. I remember one sunset when I was out just with a friend, and the waves were perfect peeling left handers, there was snow on the mountain, we saw five massive eagles flying past and a seal popped up to say 'hi' just next to us. So magical... My favorite cold water spot is a long peeling left-hander somewhere in the Arctic, if I could choose one wave to surf for the rest of my life it would be that one. And my warm water favorite is on an deserted island somewhere in the Canaries, haha, sorry for being so specific." - Maria Petersson @miamariapetersson #theoceanisfemale 📷 @surfebeiben | @pontus_palsson

I wasn’t really interested in longboarding then, but I tried it and, oh my god, since then I was addicted to riding a longboard. I feel like I’m dancing on the water and flying like a bird when my toes are on the nose. When everything happens perfectly you just feel so free or even feel nothing, you are a part of nature surrounded by ocean, wind, sun, sea creatures, birds, etc. Once you experience this, your body/mind never forgets it, wherever you are. Now I live on an island and nobody surfs but me and my man. Sometimes people come from the mainland but mostly it's just us... A few months back I paddled out with my man and to my absolute surprise there were girls surfing! Two chicks from Brasil had come to the island and stayed for a couple days. "I’ve had a lifelong affection for the ocean. Having grown up landlocked on the East Coast, I didn’t begin surfing until my mid-twenties when I moved to California by myself. A while back I read a quote that resonated with me: 'being alone has a power that very few can handle.' As an independent person, I do most things on my own. Oftentimes, that includes surfing without my friends. I’m never entirely isolated in the water, but the people around me are strangers. My advice - don’t hesitate to do things alone. Be one of the few who handles the power." - Lindsay Plunk @lyn_marie07 #theoceanisfemale

"Surfing is the congregation of water people that just happened to be born on land. Some people spend their whole lives looking for 'home' and surfers are lucky that we've found ours. It's our way of interacting with our Mother. Each wave is another conversation with our earth... Surfing has 'ruined' my life as a wise man once said to me in between sets at Pleasure Point. Surfing provides the balance in my life. The water is my meditation room, therapist office, and best friend's couch. There is no greater feeling of being connected to the water, even if it's through a gnarly wipeout." - Natasha Brown @nattyb223 #theoceanisfemale 📷's @preston__allen @traveler @kristi_chan

Pt. II. "My man is a local Balinese guy. Living with him in Medewi, Bali for the last few years has left me being pushed into bigger, longggg and better waves. Now we are living back in Oz he is always making me keen for waves and pushing me. Yeh, the guys in the surf make it fun but I guess it's lucky to have them as mates. Surfing in new breaks or locations can always be tricky. Paddling out to a break and the guys look at you like 'your just a chick' is a shitty feeling.. She had us standing up on bodyboards and we would share with all the cousins until I got my first foamie at the age of 7. Stoked for the 13th Joel Tudor Duct Tape invitational, taking place in Huntington Beach during the VANS US Open of Surfing this Friday. Mixing up its format with a roster of women invitees only, sixteen of traditional longboarding’s most stylish women will hit the water with their leash-less single-fin logs.⠀ The contest will not only celebrate progressive traditional longboarding but women's surfing too. As always in the Duct Tape, as an encouragement for surfers to ride the same wave with style and creativity, additional prize money will be awarded for best-shared wave, while honoring the ladies' rule of no interference. • I’ve been meditating on the way we act when we are in the ocean... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It seems to me that because we are exposed, vulnerable and immersed in such a vast element, with all its delicious benefits - it makes us be truly present. Right in the moment. There’s no time to get caught up in all the stress of daily life, otherwise you get caught in the washing machine! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So we tend to be our true selves when we go out there. All the funny faces, our most awkward movements, innocence all around, like babies in the womb - pure feeling, no thought. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I personally smile a lot when I catch a wave, or when I watch the pelicans go by, or witness the glorious light from the Sun’s moves. I also look down quite often and forget to look ahead, but when I do is usually to smile at a party wave rider! (watch 👉🏽) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Feeling super grateful to live right in front of this majestic blue! 💙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ______________ 📽 @wavelengthsphotography #partywave #surfvideo #droneshot #surfergirl #surflife #surfing #pacific #elparedon #blacksandbeach #guatemala #centralamerica #surflessons #keepitsimple #hersurf #saltysoul #theoceanisfemale

As my friend Jade was catching a wave in she said “go get em buddy”. I froze as I came to the realization that it was my boyfriend waiting for me out past the line up. I nervously paddled over to see him sitting on his board with a ring that was tied to a little key ring floaty...he said some super sweet words and put that ring on my finger. “When I was 16, I went on a holiday with my family to Cornwall in the UK. I really loved the rough, wind-and weather-beaten landscape and the beautiful countryside with beaches, cliffs and rolling hills. But the most memorable moment on that holiday was when we drove through the tiny bay of Polzeath on a windy, rainy day. Through the car window, I could see two surfers braving the storm in the ocean. They looked completely at home in the water with their boards. As if nothing could take away their happiness. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to try surfing as well. I tried right then and there, with some old bodyboard I found in the tool shed of our holiday cottage. The following summer, I took surf lessons in the beautiful Southwest of France with its endless white beaches and fragrant pine forests. From then on, all my saving and all my free time have gone into surfing. It is the main ingredient in my life and impacts on all my decisions.” - Inga Panten @germanmermaiddiary 📸 @waveparkmentawai #theoceanisfemale

I subscribe to the theory of walking towards what you want in life, even when it’s dark and you can’t see the path to get there. In my experience if you continue to walk forward the ground will appear beneath your feet. - Ray Collins . . This quote resonates so much with me. I let self doubt cripple me sometimes (ok a lot of times) but what I’ve learned in the past few weeks is that it’s okay to be afraid... to be scared of failing and rejection. Be afraid but do it anyway. Whatever it is - an idea, a skill you’ve always wanted to learn, a project, a job... take the first step, and then two, or three or more until what you’ve been drumming up in your head for years becomes reality. Do it because it will be so worth it. . . In the pic is @noshoes_noworries shot last week in padang padang with @fionapeters :) . . . #blue #ocean #portraits #sonyalpha #sonya6300 #sonyforher #saltedlinehousing #seapixelsph #sonyimages #seafrogshousing #surfphotography #underwaterphotography #seafrogshk #seafrogssaltedline #surfvisuals #travel360 #portraits #theoceanisfemale #bali #padangpadang #travel #travelgram

“Before I turned 30, I got depressed. I was on a trip around New Zealand and I found myself lonely, sad and just crying all the time. It was one of those, "What the hell am I doing with my life?" moments. When I got back in the Philippines, I didn’t want to see anyone, I didn’t want to go anywhere, but I knew I wanted to go surfing. And so I went, and as soon as I got out there in the line up, I had this feeling like I had forgotten what it was I was depressed about. Like all of a sudden, I was healed. The Ocean is my refuge." - Cristina Raposa @marsirap #theoceanisfemale

Thanks @theoceanisfemale “I paint pre-loved surfboards and other items with the intent that they avoid landfills and are given a new lease on life. I want to educate and spread a positive message with my art, to encourage people to do the right thing, and save our planet in any which way we can. Knowledge is the key to success, right?" - Holly Ogden @artgypsea #theoceanisfemale @ Perth, Western Australia
