“...The instructor took me out to the lineup, yelled, ‘Paddle!’ and I caught the very first wave. Ever since then I want to surf more. In 2015/2016 I went to the legendary North Shore of Oahu during a winter swell. ‘Only pros allowed in water, sorry,’ they told me. How naive of me to think I could surf there. But never say never. Maybe one day I will.” - Ronja Sofia Fürst @ronja_travels #theoceanisfemale

“Surfing affects everything in my life, I will never live far away from the ocean, just thinking about it makes me want to cry. I'm a surf photographer as well so the forecast rules my world, from the time I wake up depends on the wind and tides, the way I organise my day depends on the best moment to go for a surf, or if it's better to take photos or if I have time to do both ;). If I get in the water in the morning whatever will happen the rest of the day to me is just fine.” - Marina Farinos @marinaemerald #theoceanisfemale

“My first nearly barrel... I was in Simeulue, Indonesia, a surf session with only boys and good surfers. Then I saw the wave... I start paddling, the guy beside me also.. I told him I will take it... and I did it! I was happy because it was overhead (and I started surfing only 5 months ago). Suddenly I saw the wave closing and I realized that I was in a barrel!! I was so surprised, and excited that I completely forgot to go faster and I wiped out. After this wave, I had a big smile for the rest of the day. Since that day, I am addict to surf.” - Laurence Papillon @petrybox 📸 @mati.olivieri.surfph #theoceanisfemale

Pt. 2 "I created Noorish Tofino Retreats because I love meeting new people and learning from their stories and experiences. I wanted to create a place that is welcoming to women of all backgrounds, cultures and experiences. A space where people could relax, have fun and connect more deeply to herself and with the nature around us. At the core of Noorish's beliefs is an environment of openness and support so everyone can feel comfortable to try new things, create new friendships and be herself. Whether you're an advanced yogi or never done yoga before, whether you've never surfed or are a shredder, and whether you've ever taken a trip on your own or not, my goal is for my guests to feel welcomed, comfortable and nourished so they can push their own boundaries and discover something new about herself. With my partnership with Liz of Dryft Watersports, we want to create memorable international retreat experiences for all women. We love referring to our mantra of "Encourage, Empower, Embrace" - we are here for each other." - Liv Hung @abellelife | @noorishtofino | @dryftwatersports 📸 @supyogakristy #theoceanisfemale

Pt. 1 "Here in Tofino we have a wonderful community of female surfers. I really look up to Catherine Bruwhiler, one of the first of Tofino's surfers and definitely the first female. She's been National Canadian Champion many times and she continues to push the boundaries with paddle surf and her company, Tofino Paddle Surf. For years when she was growing up, she was the only girl surfing these unexplored waters in the rugged Pacific Northwest, trekking through rainforests to get to the breaks. Wetsuits certainly weren't as technical back then and I'm sure it was freezing cold! That's why I'm so stoked she is going to be coaching our surf lessons for my upcoming Noorish Your Connection Yoga & Adventure Retreat; she's a real pioneer and truly embodies what it means to be a Tofitian." - Liv Hung @abellelife | @cathbruhwiler_tofinopaddlesurf | @noorishtofino 📸 @supyogakristy #theoceanisfemale

“My initial plan was to work as a surf coach in South Africa for 6 months and then go back to the landlocked country that I am from …. that was 4 years ago :) Looking back, I am happy I never left the frigid water, kelpy (seaweed) spots, the seals and therewith constant feeling there might be a shark, divine landscapes, mellow and heavy, short and long waves in Cape Town. Here you find waves in (almost) all conditions and therefore I “suffer” from a constant itchiness to go back out there. Surfing gives me the perfect work life balance and even though one wipe out ended on an operating table in hospital, the feeling I have while being in the ocean will probably never change. As female surfers we are definetely in the minority around here but luckily I see more and more frothing ladies in the water :)” - Janne @jannepauline 📸 Diego González Cabrera #theoceanisfemale

“I spent my 30th birthday learning to surf in Indonesia, and learning to undo everything I was conditioned to believe I was not capable of accomplishing. I had some of the longest hold downs and sweetest waves that kept me craving more. Indo is still my favorite place to surf. While learning, I often asked the surf guides why there weren't many local girls in the lineup. They swiftly responded, “Because they don't want to be too dark. We don't like dark women". That stung, but colorism and men dictating what is attractive about our bodies is nothing new. I am so grateful to see other women in the lineup, especially other women of color, and to the outlets that showcase this diversity. Representation sparks change. My hope for the future of surfing is for girls/women of color to believe they deserve an aquatic life, they won’t need to wait for some epiphany of self-acceptance - they’ll already have it. Our hair can be natural, our skin glow with melanin and our figures be gracefully athletic.” - Chelsea Woody @chel.bythe.sea 📸 Rob Hudson #theoceanisfemale

“Surfing has truly affected so many different aspects of my life - my physical health, my role as a mother and my connection with our planet. As a mum it is an activity that I share with my boys - a time to connect, to chat, to dream. To experience something bigger then all of us together - to sit in the ocean (raw, wild and so expansive) and just "be" observing all that is around us, is one of the most special times in my life. The wildlife we have had the opportunity to watch together and the show that nature provides, it is impossible to describe what it means to share these life experiences with my boys. It is such a privilege to be asked by your teenage boys to join them in the water to go surfing. Really? I don't think I can really ask for more than that as a mum.” - Cheyenne McGlue @cheymcglue 📸 @oasis.surf #theoceanisfemale

I didn’t send it at first, because I thought, well, I’m not looking very fit - although I seriously am. 😄 But today I sent it to a friend, who runs a small Bikini-Label and she posted it and and got so much positive feedback like “finally, not a model sized surfer”. So maybe that’s something for you too: you don’t have to be model-sized to surf - although I’d say that you still need to be fit. It’s just not the same and people tend to forget :)” - Philine @happy_adventurer #theoceanisfemale

I caught a wave and got absolutely trashed, my board snapped in half and I was under for longer than necessary. I took a break for a while after that and that is probably where all my fears started to set in about wiping out....in the last few weeks I have managed to overcome so much in my head and heart. I dont think I could pinpoint an exact moment but being able to pop up and feel the board and myself become one, and ride a wave with pure joy is probably one of the best feelings I could hope for.” - Melissa Jane Wright @melahoneybee 📸 @saskiakoerner | @craigopix #theoceanisfemale

“Surfing has taught me so much and a lot of it I bring into my everyday life. Big components of surfing that I have learned over the years is patience, confidence, empathy, and to love and support yourself. On one hand, having these qualities and mindset makes surfing much more enjoyable, but on the other hand it makes the rough days and sessions easier to deal with. There are days where I surf horribly or don’t catch anything at all, just like many of us. Knowing how to look at the situation differently though and put a positive spin on things is how I grow from the more disappointing sessions. Even on your lowest day, whether you’re surfing or not, there is always something to learn and grow from. I truly believe surfing has made me a better person overall, in the water and out.” - Kaylee Duncanson @kayleedunc #theoceanisfemale

This was never a good feeling. Thankfully, it hasn’t happened in awhile now. I started to build a community of female surfers around me who have been such an amazing support system and have helped me get my skills and confidence to the next level. Living my absolute best life. ☀️🦐 I’m practicing being thankful this week. For being so close to the beach, for the people in my life, for my dog, for my tiny travel trailer that I call home, for my ability to heal people in pain. For the little moments like driving past mountainscapes while listening to a good song. Remember to not let the “bad vibes” ruin your good vibes. Negative thoughts can be addicting & will snowball into panic attacks if you let them - control them as they form, acknowledge them & then ask them to leave. Replace them with thoughts of something or someone you’re thankful for. Remember: YOU are in control of YOU, no matter what’s happening to you externally. Practice exercising this like a muscle; in time, the ability to feel thankful even in the worst situations will flow easily. 💋

“We don't have surf breaks near my hometown, so I didn't grow up loving waves. In fact, I was a little scared of them. When I got a bit older and grew fond of travel, I decided to visit this famous island far away from home. I had to endure a 6-hour bus ride, 1 hour flight, 3-hour boat ride, and a 45-minute van ride just to get to there. Turns out, they had a world class surf break and surf classes were offered everywhere. Long story short, I tried surfing for the first time and I never felt so comfortable in my entire life. All my fears, insecurities, worries, and doubts were washed away by the ocean and replaced with good vibes. This was 3 years ago. The ocean is like the deepest warmest hug from my ancestors and also a huge kick in the ass. The balance is necessary and humbling and beautiful. This is what I seek. The medicine I crave deep in my bones to heal and rejuvenate and bring alive the parts of me I couldn’t feel anymore. This is why I surf. I’ve (re)committed myself to her wildness a little over a month ago. Once a week I paddle out and let everything go. Out here i hold no titles. I can’t check my phone. I take care of no one but myself. As a mama of 3 I want to encourage all of you mamas who struggle with anxiety and depression and confusion about who you are and what the frick your doing sometimes , find something that you do for YOU! Something that lights you up and connects you to your magical self. And commit to it. “I saw the movie Blue Crush which started it all. I wanted to be Anne Marie Chadwick the main character. I wanted to wake up at the crack of dawn and surf crystal clear blue waves. I’d dream of living on the north shore of Oahu just like her and living the island life. Surfing was mesmerizing. The grace and style and strength required captivated me. It challenged me and helped me respect and understand the ocean. Ever since that day, I gravitated more and more towards surfing. It became my number one fascination and obsession. From moving to west coast to the east coast of Florida to San Diego California. Chasing waves has been my priority ever since. Every day I surf and if not, my day isn’t complete. I’ve traveled to Australia, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico just to follow my love for surfing. It constantly challenges me and rewards me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. I wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t for surfing. It is my yoga, my passion, my teacher, my dream.” - Brooke Carter @sea_vibez 📸 @indo.eye #theoceanisfemale (📷 @theoceanisfemale ) . . . I think we're all realizing that the mainstream surfing media (and media in general) isn't going to give us what we want when we ask nicely, and the numbers will never be in our favor, so we have to make it ourselves, and create our own spaces and art to enact the change we want to see. It took Surfer Magazine 60 years to dedicate an issue to women. Isn't that hilarious? I've wasted a lot of time waiting to ask permission to express the way I feel, and the things I want to see are just as valid as anyone else. I think we're all waking up to the potential in our community. The power of the ocean has always been there, we just need to harness it to empower ourselves to create the world we want to see." - Anna Biegalski @waterlogging 📸 @rszot #theoceanisfemale

“Ever since I was a kid, my mother used to waterski and I became interested in watersports. At the same time I was watching surf on TV and I never thought it was possible in Iran until I found that we can surf in Chabahar..... [my best wipeout] was in Chabahar, the waves were 3 per set, I caught the first one and when I saw how high up the wall I was I threw myself off from fear and for sure thought I was not going to come out alive since I was stuck under the riptide on the sand with my leash wrapped around my legs so I couldn't use them. So I ate a lot of water in the end...Haha but seriously I did say goodbye to everybody under there for a moment.” -Narges Barghbani @narges_cb #theoceanisfemale

There was no better way to spend the official start of Fall (and my birthday weekend) then out in the water at the last @surfsetnyc Epic Beach Day! I loved every moment I got a chance to surf this summer and I gotta thank my SurfsetNYC family @dianaygarrett and @aaronthouvenin and @skudinsurf @cliffskudin for all their tips and encouragement. Sometimes you need someone to tell you to stop thinking so much, sit back and just enjoy the ride (and oh man, that last wave of the day was a sweet one!)🏄🏽‍♀️🤙🏽🌊. . . #surfsetnyc #nycfitness #surfwithsurfset #birthdayweekend #ridethewave #gratitude

Precisava de algo para aliviar o stress e nunca mais parei. Posso dizer que surfar mudou minha maneira de olhar a vida. Thanks to @theoceanisfemale for featuring the Surf Senioritas story. All we want is to create more opportunities for women everywhere to get in the water and surf! We show the 'real' surfing world. No glossy mags, no perfect hair, no up your butt bikinis. Just pure joy, happiness and stoke 🏄🏼‍♀️🏄🏿‍♀️🏄🏻‍♀️

"It's so tiresome to see the redundant photos of women and underage girls in full makeup & perfect 'beachy' hair holding their boards on the beach, or to see the persistent focus on body parts instead of skills. Surfing women can be beautiful, but so much more! However, instead of getting bummed out about that (which is really just the mainstream, money-driven side of female surf culture anyway) I choose to follow & support women (and brands) that highlight themselves and other women as multi-faceted people, shapers, mothers, athletes, artists, activists, writers, adventurers..." - Elisa Allen Arias @_my9lives_ #theoceanisfemale 📷 @cuerna

Strengthen your purity of intent. 💪🏽✨ I’ve reflected on this a lot this week: do you wake up with intention? Do you speak with intention? Do you relax with intention? Or do you get swept up throughout the day, only to reflect before bed and ask “where did the time go?” 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve been exercising my intentions like a muscle. I focus on the person in front of me, I choose to forgo phone time in order to be more intentional with my time at the gym, while eating, while relaxing in nature. I’ve become more intentional with my patients. I’ve noticed that because of this I feel more fulfilled. I feel more relaxed. I’m better able to provide health care to my patients. The anxiety of “getting things done” melts away and I’ve become more present in each moment. 💕 This has also caused me to pay attention to emotions I’ve been repressing. This process of building focus is helping me clear out lingering negativity, allowed me to be intentional with my self care and self love. 🙆🏼‍♀️👑 I encourage you to start exercising your focus, reduce your distractions (phones, laptops); you’ll finally be existing & learning from moments throughout the day instead of letting them sweep past you. You’ll become more intuitive, productive, and gain a sense of peace you may be currently lacking. 🕊💫

"Surf senioritas did a tour summer before last around Wales and South West England. We met so many amazing women, we surfed with dolphins, caught so many party waves and I just had the biggest smile for about a month after." - Dani Robertson @missdaniboom #theoceanisfemale 📷 @surf_senioritas
