This is my dad. His name is Joseph Benjamin Powers, which is one of the greatest names ever given and I will always be angry at my oldest sister for taking it to name her son (Ben is a cool kid though, so I guess it’s fine). I inherited a lot from my dad. He taught me to love music, specifically Bluegrass and Blues and a lot of Elvis. He taught me to cook and to love food, to season well and remember that the point of cooking is to feed others. He taught me to appreciate words and the importance of good pillows.
Dad is quietly creative man. He grew up as a barefoot kid in the backwoods of Virginia, running around with his brothers eating fruit and nuts they found growing wild. They left the house at sunrise and went back at sunset.
He also sings about what he’s doing constantly, which I do too.
Lastly, Dad is very tall man (used to be 6’5”, is now 6’4”) and has an incredible head of hair. I’ve always been very proud of both of these things.
Happy Fathers Day, Pop.
