I’d only ever seen giant cacti in Hollywood westerns, that is, until my first surf trip down to deeper Baja. It was such a joy to see that such improbable plants exist, to once again be reminded how wondrous this planet of ours is! These (well dusted) cardón specimens, flanking Greg Long’s not insignificant high top 4x4 camper, are probably 10, perhaps 12 metres, some reportedly reach 18 metres, or nigh on 60ft in height! Well adapted to their spartan environment, being able to survive with virtually no soil, they rely on a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen fixing fungi and bacteria. It really is remarkable that something that size could flourish in a desert!
