AT | Pilgrim | Tinker Creek was a very normal looking creek. Nothing notable, comparatively speaking. I love that. Dillard is talking about her everyday tree—her backyard cedar—here, too. It’s her vision that matters: “I have since only very rarely seen the tree with the lights in it. The vision comes and goes, mostly goes, but I live for it, for the moment the mountains open and a new light roars in spate through the crack, and the mountains slam.” Some have asked what I think helped me stay on the trail. What pushed me forward. The people are certainly no small part of that. What I realized moved me the most were the little things. It’s not only the great mountains that slam that cause my spirit to crack open, but the delicate way water droplets cleave to the needles of pines and firs. And how you can touch one of those suspended droplets with the bridge of your nose and feel it run down your own little drainpipe. What you see is what you get.

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney . Just like this poor trail, I’ve abandoned a number of ideas and business concepts over the years, mainly because of fear. Fear of failing. Fear of not following through. Fear of having people judge me and tell me my ideas are stupid and won’t work. . One of the many things I’ve learned thru-hiking the PCT is I’m strong enough to do anything I want to do. All I have to do is put my mind to it and do the dang thing. . So here I am, working to put together an online concept I manifested while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this summer. Here’s to not abandoning ideas and instead turning them into amazing realities. . . . . . #pct2018 #PacificCrestTrail #P3Hikers #thruhike #hiking #backpacking #thruhiking #thruhiker #hikethepct #HikingAdventures #TakeAHike #HikeMore #HikingFun #HikerTrash #Dirtbag #GoOutside #OptOutside #WomenWhoHike #WomenWhoExplore #werehikers #SheExplores #TrailLife #ChooseMountains #withGuthook #guthookguides

Satisfying my backpacker geek catching a talk by Liz Thomas about her amazing thru-hiking adventures and book (Backpackers Long Trails). I have to admit I was a little star struck. So many terrific and terrifying trail tales and lessons learned. It makes me want to do a long thru hike so badly, I’m betting the book is going to push me further over that edge. . . I could probably use the perfect timing of this talk - the week I’m in Portland for a work conference? - as a sign too. . . . . #backpackers #backpacking #longtrails #thruhiking #beinspired #neverstopexploring #worktravels @lizthomashiking

I’ve been blown down by Santa Anna winds the past couple days, but now I’m sleeping in a warm loft in Wrightwood. I headed out from Hiker Heaven on the morning of day 106 (October 14th) and ate my cold pizza from the night before. I’m a late sleeper compared to everyone else so I hiked that day alone. Basically the entire day was a climb into the San Gabriel Mountains. I had to dodge poodle dog bush (it smells like weed and causes super bad skin blisters) and got freaked out by eyes following me while I was night hiking (this is densely populated lion territory) but I made it to camp where Relish, Tang, Salty, Bee, and Flutter were all set up. That night the winds came. They ripped my stakes up at 2am and my reinforced-with-rocks stakes at 6am, so I just packed up and headed out. Me, Salty, Tang, and Relish stopped at a fire station to get water and we just hung out in the pit toilet to escape the winds coming off of the desert floor into the mountains where we were. Imagine 4 dirty hikers passing around a cup of coffee in a filthy bathroom. It was a windy day and we ended up having lunch at another pit toilet. Luckily, the day ended in a creek bed with no wind and I slept soundly...but the wind was 10x worse today (day 108). A few miles after leaving camp, the wind blew me to the ground. That was pretty demoralizing, but I guess I am just a skeleton with a terrible beard. I kept trucking past Mt. Baden-Powell and got crazy trail magic from a hiker couple named the Homeboys at the base of the mountain. A few more miles and I was finally at the hitch to Wrightwood. A mom and daughter gave me a ride down and I met Juju, Alpine Pat, Salty, Relish, Bee, and Flutter at the Yodler where we indulged in some much-needed calories. Relish had gotten in contact with some trail angels that said we could stay at their house. So here we are. Me, Salty, and Relish are bundled up and warm. Out of the wind in a cozy Wrightwood loft. Back into the wind tomorrow . . . #pct #pacificcresttrail #trekthepct #pctsobo #pctsobo2018 #pct2018 #pctig #thruhiking #hikertrash #ultralight #pctcalifornia #california #latechishere #tinypack #cutepack #cuteboyswithcutepacks #palantepacks

The slickrock slide of Dude Creek along a little-used portion of the 60 mile Highline Trail. The Highline may well be Arizona’s longest non-loop trail by mileage after the 70 mile Tonto Trail and of course the 800 mile Arizona Trail which uses a portion of the Highline. Recent trail work has helped to reduce the traditionally relentless ups and downs as the Highline winds across canyon after canyon here at the base of the Mogollon Rim. The Highline is easier now but a fair few miles longer as a result. This section, just east of where the AZT peels off for the Rim, is very lightly used, with few good vehicle access points in that direction for the day hiking set or loop options for backpackers. The Mogollon Rim Trail conceptual route uses the Highline Trail in its entirety, here as part of a 65 mile section between the resupply towns of Pine and Forest Lakes. #mogollonrim #mogollonrimtrail #rimcountry #highlinetrail #thruhiking

KITCHEN SINK - hailing from #SanFrancisco by way of #Peru , thru hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail 2018* This guy could chill out even the hottest of days with his zen master attitude and infectious laugh. Most hikers choose a trail name to symbolize their journey, sometimes it chooses them. Shot on the trail after many days from their last bath, bed, beer, or burger, somewhere between despair and euphoria, my goal was to catch PCT hikers in all their enduring glory. @mysticvibe86

In celebration of the trail’s 40th anniversary, the CDTC is “sending out 50 dedicated volunteers, or “Blazers” to mark 750 miles of the CDT, including trail intersections, junctions, road crossings, and confusing sections of the CDT.” Historically unmarked or confusing, the trail will become much more accessible and safe. Day 35 (Wednesday, August 29) - 8.3 - Nearo out of Silverton Due to a Hunter S. Thompson movie that booked all the rooms in town, we ended up at a hostel with an odd, controlling owner. I hate rules and chafe under her strict supervision. The only basic rules out on the trail are don’t poop in the water source and don’t burn the forest down. I much prefer the trail. I’ve been craving gluten-free pancakes for over 300 miles now but that’s not an option in these small towns, so at breakfast I order an omelette and hash browns instead. I’ve finished my entire meal before my friends have even finished 1 of their pancakes and I’m still hungry. I order another side of hash browns and bacon. I pile on salt and butter and oddly, strawberry jam, to make it taste good. The trail has officially ruined my taste buds. Ryan needs to charge his phone, so we plan to meet up on trail rather than hitch out all 3 of us and my goodness hitching is easy in this spot/town/with two women. 4 cars pull over in the first minute. As soon as we’re back at the pass and begin hiking, a huge weight is lifted from our shoulders. Town is stressful and weird and expensive but the trail is simple. And today is beautiful. We wind our way amongst huge rock features and gently climb up above the pass. There are herds of sheep across the trail and the miles are easy. We’re only going 6.3 today and have tons of time, so I let my body hike at whatever pace it wants. There’s an ease to just coasting out here, not worrying about miles or water or food or time. Apparently I’m hiking faster than I realize. It’s only 2:30 by the time we get to our planned campsite. I’d been fantasizing about all the things I could do with the afternoon (nap! eat! stretch! write!) but 2:30 is *really* early. We decide to go another 2 miles to what our app says is a “huge” campsite. Just as I’m getting sick of hiking, I see Becca’s pack leaning against a tree. This giant flat spot below the trail must be our home for the night! It’s only 3:30pm! We laze around eating chips in the sun (I’ve converted Becca to my chip life!), then make an early dinner and are crawling in bed by the time Ryan shows up at 6:30. Sweet sleep!

moody afternoon at my most favorite place ever in all of the land. ever. - even though this was taken in the middle of “summer” i remember it being 40 degrees and wearing a winter jacket with wool socks, sooo it’s fitting that it has some autumn tones to it. - i know it’s a boat house but dontcha just want to post up in there with some hot chocolate topped with too much whipped cream and the little tiny marshmallows? i do. - #mybanff | #banffnationalpark | #travelalberta

I’ve been off trail for a few days now. It’s been strange, readjusting to this fast pace world I live in now...it’s really hard not to miss the trail and the people who came with it. While I was on the trail, we would always refer to our pre-trail lives or life after the trail as the “real world” or “real life”. What I’m realizing now is that...THAT was real life. Life on the trail was a real as it could get. Everyone you meet has this light in their eyes, this passion for life and adventure. A zero calorie energy that we all fed off of - it was contagious. Even though the trail was f****cking hard and pushed me to my breaking point (and beyond), happiness and fulfillment were always close friends. Living in the moment and being proud of myself everyday. My life was reduced down to focusing on surviving and finding joy in life’s simplest pleasures. I was falling in love with the truest version of myself. Letting all the hair naturally grow (still no beard) - not wearing deodorant and inherently smelling bad all the time, even after a shower - covered in dirt, mud and god knows what else - having f*cked up looking feet - being in the best shape of my life and not being concerned about what my reflection showed in a mirror. Feeling true, undiluted freedom. The way life should be . For the past half-year I’ve been moving toward one single goal. There was no question of “what I am doing?” “where I’m going?”. The answer was so clear...walk my camp ass to Katahdin! 🕺 But now, post-trail, it’s not the withdrawal of endorphins I’m worried about - but the withdrawal of purpose. I feel very lucky that I have a passion project to work toward. This self-published photography book, documenting my journey on the AT...THIS will be my new Katahdin. So thankful for the people who backed the Kickstarter! For giving me purpose and inspiration through a V weird, and confusing time . And I’m still going through a bit of post-trail depression, my emotions weighing heavy the past few days. I know it’ll take time. But something that’s always helped me rekindle the fire...planning the next adventure...🚪🍃

What do South Sister, Toketee Falls, and Mile 0 of The Siskiyou Peaks Trail have in common? They're each on the Toketee Top 8: Oregon Adventures list. Visit South Sister during a 3 Sisters Marathon, check out Toketee Falls during a thru-bike of the North Umpqua Trail, and begin your Siskiyou Peaks Trail adventure in Ashland, Oregon. But before hitting the trail, check out Toketee.net for gear and keepsakes from the Cascades. If you'd like to see official SPT gear there too, let'em know. To that one time I hiked up to Cispus Pass, took a look around and realized why everyone kept referring to Washington as a “mini” Sierra. The climbs, the views, the climbs, the remoteness of it all, but did I mention the climbs? There was so much climbing in Washington! - With hard climbs comes epic views. And with every climb up, the views kept getting better and better. 😀 . . . . . #TrailTuesday #pct2018 #PacificCrestTrail #P3Hikers #thruhike #hiking #backpacking #thruhiking #thruhiker #hikethepct #HikingAdventures #TakeAHike #HikeMore #HikingFun #HikerTrash #Dirtbag #GoOutside #OptOutside #WomenWhoHike #WomenWhoExplore #werehikers #SheExplores #TrailLife #herPNWlife #mtnchicks #ChooseMountains #withGuthook #guthookguides

Trail Shock - Part 2 of 2: What's the difference between the PCT and the HST? The PCT is only open to hiking. The Hot Springs Trail is a multi-sport adventure where at times you can hike, bike, or pack-raft to make it thru. Due to this factor, there are multiple ways to complete this trail. The PCT is signed with official trail badges. The Hot Springs Trail is completed by following a guidebook that mentions signs which are found along the journey. The PCT is predominately a single-track dirt trail. The HST utilizes a wide variety of trail treads, including trail-less ridge-running, also known as XC. The PCT is loaded with official campsites On the HST, you'll probably wind up camping somewhere that no else has before. If all of this sounds good to you, then the difference between these two trails could be the difference between feeling like you're confined to a narrow ribbon, or feeling like you're out on a wide-open adventure. #trailchat #adventuresoaking #hotspringstrail #findyouradventure #thruhiking #hotsprings #findyourtrail #peakbagging #pct2019

TRAIL SHOCK: What to expect when going from the PCT to the HST. Part 1 of 2. 1. The most noticeable difference between the PCT and the Hot Springs Trail is the wide variety of trail tread that you’ll find on the HST, since it goes directly thru resupply towns, uses roads to connect trail segments, and when ridge-running in Nevada - has no trail to follow at all. Also, the driest parts of the HST can be bike-packed. 2. The second thing you’ll notice is that on the PCT, there are trail badges at virtually every intersection, letting you know which way to go. On the HST however, you’ll have to verify signs using the guide. 3. On the PCT, you’ll pass by a trail camp every few minutes, if not every few miles. On the HST, there are miles with no established campsites and segments where trailside camping is not allowed. These segments have been detailed in the guidebook as well. 4. On the HST, people will treat you differently. Instead of being the 100th hiker they’ve seen today, or over the years, you’ll be more like the first. Not only that, on the PCT, everyone knows what you’re doing, where as on the HST, only you know what you’re doing. For me, the biggest shock between these two trails was all the soaking I did on the HST. And not just in hot springs. I swam in more lakes and creeks than I ever had before while on a long trail. It’s not quite Deep Creek every day out there but compared to the PCT, there were more days spent hot springing than there were spent resupplying. For you, the biggest shock could be the ebb and flow of hiking between extremely desolate and extremely popular places. But this shock – of hot waters and cold, of time spent alone and with others, of finding your way instead of just following it – is what makes this trail a completely different experience than the PCT. Stay tuned for part 2 of this post. #trailchat #adventuresoaking #hotspringstrail #findyouradventure #thruhiking #hotsprings #findyourtrail #peakbagging #pct2019

#UPnorthLoop, DAY 155 – MUCH LIKE LEWIS AND CLARK, OUR CLUELESS LARK THROUGH THE WILDS OF IDAHO has impressed upon us the beautiful brutality of the high defiles, the untrustworthiness of late October weather, and the kindness of strangers. First, deteriorating trail conditions and multiple bitter-cold ford’s along Monroe Creek pushed us up into the extremity-numbing cold and snow of the Lolo Trail. Then the delay made us miss meeting our old friends John and Carrie Reese who drove hours to bring us our resupply. They left it with Doug Schroeder’s camp of local elk hunters who welcomed us with the warmth and generosity of family. . Now we are improvising a reroute around the Selway-Bitterroot and Frank Church River of no Return Wildernesses. This huge block of Wilderness, the biggest in the lower 48, was meant to be the crowning achievement of the UP North Loop. But, much to our chagrin, it will have to wait until another day. All of the challenges we’ve faced over the last five months have pushed us out the back end of our planned weather window. Fortunately, Idaho is loaded with beautiful and historical locales that we can link together to maintain the integrity of our goal: experiencing the American Northwest in a way that few, if any, before us ever have. . What a Blessing to be a Biped! . Give Thanks for Life!

Now that I am back home, Most people ask me "how did the PCT change your perspective on life?". And they expect a deep and thoughtful answer from me. My answer is very simple. The PCT only made my existing belifes stronger. My belifes that life is too precious to be wasted in offices or in concrete buildings, that being close to nature is part of our natural instinct and it helps both body and soul.

“I was there sitting in the airport that morning and just absolutely having a total breakdown. I’m not an emotional person really. I don’t display them that frequently, but just weeping in the terminal. I can distinctly remember... So, I was sitting there in the airport terminal at 6 in the morning trying to fly to Nashville. I just started thinking about all the great times my brother and I had together... The one that really stood out was hiking Mount Lemon as kids. It was one of the happiest times I’ve ever had. So, knowing that and we were planning in 2017 to do the Smoky’s section of the AT... So, combining the plan to hike the Smoky’s and the great memories I had with my brother hiking as a kid, I was just like, ok time to do something really amazing. And the one thing that I always give credit to my brother for was never taking the easy way out of anything. I have always been kind of a slacker in the way that I take the path of least resistance. My brother always set his mind to something and whatever his goal was he would go complete it. So, I just decided what is this impossible goal what is this thing that I have no right to do, but is difficult and because it is difficult I should go and do it? And that was thru-hiking the AT... It really came almost like a lightning bolt. I have no idea where that inspiration came from, but it hit me and from that second I knew it was gonna happen... I’m not a very religious person. It almost sounds like divine intervention or something like that. I don’t know what to attribute it to, but it came at the right place and the right time.” - Two Trails, Episode 07 • • • • #hikertrash #hiking #hikingadventures #hike #thruhike #thruhiking #thruhiker #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrials #appalachiantrail2017 #appalachiantrail2018 #appalachiantrail2016 #northbound #southbound #podcast #pct #pacificcresttrail #awalkinthewoods #awol #georgiatomaine #trail #trails #trailangel #trailcommunity #hikertrashpod #vagabond #vagabondlife #vagabonding

Restless. Coming to terms with my predicament. Matt was my home, and without him no matter where I situate I feel untethered, and twisting in the wind. There is no home for me without him. I have family (both blood and by choice) who even after all this time still haven’t given up on me. They’ve housed me, helped with the logistics I needed to get back on my feet, send me supportive messages even when I’m completely dark, trying over and over again to help. There’s no magic cure for this grief and depression. Some wounds slice through your flesh, muscle, tissue, bone, down to your very core and they simply won’t stop bleeding. And so, I continue prepping to move, and move again. Craving mobility, the constant passage from place to place that was the AT. Perhaps it’s running, or coping with no longer being able to have a home. I don’t recognize this world anymore and I don’t recognize myself. I’ve become pure vagabond, not really knowing what I am running from or to. So I guess what I’m trying to say is... thank god tor contract work and this Jeep. #hikeformatt #mountainsformatt #atthruhike #AT2018 #atthruhike2018 #trektheat #thetrek #thruhike #appalachiantrail #hikertrash #nobo #thruhike2018 #rei1440project #traillife #thruhiking

Finished the Lowest to Highest standing atop a windy, snow dusted Mount Whitney at 14,505 feet!! It seemed like an appropriate way to end an epic ~135 mile hike of extremes and insanely varied terrain. On our last day, I was feeling strong and set the pace for us leaving from Whitney portal at 4:30am. The temperatures were cold enough we didn't take breaks longer than to catch our breaths. As we looked into the distance, we looked back on our hike, seeing some of the more recent landmarks like Alabama Hills and the Inyo Mountains. This was a hike that challenged me and continuously surprised me with its beauty. As I hiked back down towards the portal, it seemed as if fall had suddenly arrived. I breathed in the cold air, smiled at the leaves yellowing on the trees and welcomed the season change and the end of my hike. Want to hear more about my hike and see some of the highlights?! I will be doing an Instagram takeover for @garagegrowngear to share more from the amazing route! 📸 @aladdin_hikes

“These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb.” A recent topic of conversation among my friends group has been business. No, not work, but MY business—what I have control of in my life. I once heard @byron.katie explain this stating, “there are three types of business in this world: my business, your business, and God’s (Buddha/Allah/The Universe/Reality, etc) business.” Much of our stress comes from mentally living out of our own business. If I’m mentally in your or the universe’s business I am separated from reality and out of control—because it was never mine to control in the first place. When you focus on yourself and making yourself happy, your environment will follow. Put yourself first, because no one else is gonna do it for you.

AT | Still bewitched by these damp & dusky October woods. You know you’ve been out here a long time when you’re starting to look like you belong. How can I wear these woods as a Halloween costume?

CT 7. One thing I was disappointed in myself about during my hike of this section was my cell phone use. Since I was just coming back to "clean up" the last few miles I didnt take it as seriously. This led to me spending a lot of time texting people. Ill give myself some slack because Id hardly used my phone the previous month and missed some folks. However, I definitely learned you cant be in two places at once, even mentally. My mind just never got into the hiking zone. This confirmed that for me, off trail life cant mix with actually being on trail. #colorado #co #coloradotrail #ct #thruhike #thruhiking #hiking #hike #backpacking #alwaysbelooking #alwayslookup #adventure #thegreatoutdoors #bigagnes #arcteryx #probar #sawyerproducts #outdoorvitals #sierradesigns #blackdiamond #lasportiva #marmot #darntough #outdoorchanneltv #floridaboy #goldenhour #waymarkgearco #exxeloutdoors #mountains #breckenridge

Used my new @gopro #goprohero7 on this trip. Still figuring it out, the the stability is incredible! It’s almost like it has a built in gimble. I also used my larger @anker_official 21,000 mAh battery pack. I was able to charge my GoPro and my @apple #iPhone8plus everyday of our trip (5 days/4nights) with no problem and still had about a half a charge left on the battery pack. . . . #zpacks #teamzpacks #goosefeetgear #blackrockgear #SafeRingz #tennesseebeardco #goatworthy #backcountry #skratchlabs #865life #tristaradventures #vargooutdoors #bradfordbeans #surftennessee #brysoncityoutdoors #mybeardedself #thruhiking #corapt #hiking #plugitincircuit #greatsmokymountains #anker #backpacking #giveGodtheglory #Godisgreater #followerofChrist

I spent a day hiking on Italy's pilgrim trail - Via Francigena. 1000 km total from Gran San Bernardo to Rome. Do the entire pilgrimage or small sections...whatever works for your schedule! It's a great way to see a different side of Italy in a slow travel way! #ATWS2018 #TuscanyAdventureTimes #thisisadventure #adventuretravel #tuscany #pilgrimage #hikingtrails #hikingadventures #outdoorlife #outdoorwomen #hiking #italy🇮🇹 #thruhiking

#GR5 Day 23. To #wildcamp above Vignols. A nice walk up to the Col du Blainon at 2014m. Then a fairly easy descent to Roya past old ruined buildings and abandoned terraces. Then a climb again up into a gorge, which then opens up into a massive valley with a formidable row of cliffs at the other end. As I climbed up one side, herds of sheep could be seen far away on the other side of the valley walls. At about 2000m. it became very rocky with only blazes on the rocks to guide the way. It looked like no way through the cliffs, so I played the game of guess where the path will go as I approached (I was wrong). There was a slight, very winding path, one of those that you can only really see the next two or three metres ahead at any one time. A tough climb especially towards the top, and I could see huge and ominously dark clouds sweeping in from the other side of the valley. The rain came in then hail, then the lightning. There was no shelter so I continued. Once over the top of the cliffs the lightning was right above me, so, fearing a strike I found rough shelter in the lee of a large boulder below. I waited an hour for it to end, it didn't but there was less lightning so I carried on anyway continuing through the valley above and then over rocks to a scree path to the 2480m. Col du Crousette. It was very tough: as it was wet and cold, everything takes three times as long. At the Col I discovered it was a further climb up to Mt. Mounier, but with amazing views of misty mountains below me. Then down the valley, past the Barre Sud du Mounier, and to a good pitch above the village. 30 km, ten hours. . . . . . #gr5trail #gr52018 #landscape #landscapes #ig_landscape #ig_landscapes #mountains #ig_mountains #landscapephoto #landscapephotography #weather #too_many_hills #alps #agameoftones #hiking #hike #trek #trekking #thruhiking #thruhike #optoutside #optoutdoors #chooselife #choosemountains

Trail Trivia! 🏕⁉️🎒 For how many miles does the John Muir Trail overlap the Pacific Crest Trail? ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ A: Of the JMT’s 210 total miles, roughly 170 of those miles overlap with the PCT. So much hiker trash!

Trail Trivia! 🏕⁉️🎒 Q: What is the popular nickname for the Appalachian Trail? And why did it get that nickname? ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ ⚪️ A: “The Green Tunnel”! Because most of the trail is engulfed in lush green foliage, at least during peak thru hiking.
