I met a Shadow Mini-Me at a dog park in Connecticut the other day. She wore her blue soccer uniform proudly, telling me she's a Striker because she loves to score goals and run fast.
She was seven whole years old, because she just had a birthday. Her little brother was still just five and a quarter years old. Her sister was only nine and one half.
They had already moved four times she told me with a sigh. Her Dad was a spine surgeon who fixed people, and sometimes he had to fix them for a long time. She thought about growing up to be a doctor...or a soccer player, or a writer.
She was good at writing, she told me with a smile. Her teacher always read her stories out loud to the whole class. She loved to write about EVERYTHING.
In one rushed breath she asked if I'd ever eaten the best sushi in the world and then stared earnestly into my face. I nodded solemnly, matching her serious shift in mood, and told her I used to live in Korea and Japan where people make sushi so pretty you don't even want to eat it.
Her eyes widened and she began to dance back and forth. She LOVED sushi. In class they were learning how to write persuasive essays. She wanted to convince her Dad to take her to Tokyo so they could eat sushi together.
Before she left she gave me one last parting gift. "You should write about this! Write about the puppies and the trees! You could write about me!" And so I have sweet Shadow Mini-Me.
A snapshot of joy.
A reminder of possibility.
A story of heart.
