I’ve had a lot of conversations with people saying, “Why do you have to ‘parade’ it down the street?”
Or “Why dress up and announce it to the whole world?” Let me break this down.
There is constant judgement stemming from inside and out of the community. Right now, marriage is legal in all 50 states which is a HUGE win for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans* people. Being able to marry who you love is a basic American right.
While marriage is legal, discrimination STILL is legal in 31 states also.
So while the parade is a way to celebrate having won the right to marry, there is still work to do. And the act of me marching in the parade is our way to say, "I'm here, I'm human, I am just a man trying not to be fired for being me." "But it makes me uncomfortable." or "It grosses me out to see that," you say.
I'm sure were many people in the 1950's & 60's that seeing a black man as equal made them uncomfortable.
I'm sure there were people that were "grossed out" by the thought of a white woman with a black man.
So while the thought of treating people equally might be hard for some people to accept, it's imperative to show support that we are equal.
For me, I just want to be treated like any other guy. I don't want special treatment or my own bathroom. I just want to be treated EQUAL.
That's why we march in parades. That's why we are showing our Pride.
Not everyone loves dressing up in rainbow unicorn outfits. Not everyone in our community loves glitter.
But if someone wants to dress up in a glittered rainbow unicorn outfit, then by all means. If that's how they express themselves then how can I judge them for wearing what they want?
Who am I to judge?
With all this being said, this year will be the very first Tri-Pride.
Kayla and I got to march in the parade. And I'm proud to be able to march in not only my first parade, but also the first one of this area (Tri Cities, Tennessee). We are here.
We are loved.
