The library was an idea born out of a conversation with Mr. Dabey Ram, our friend, contractor, architect, designer and philosopher. We were sitting and mulling over what do with the corner space on first level of the land. I hesitated, 'library?' I could see the man panicking. I don't blame him. He had after all lived in a house that resembled a warehouse thanks to the library in Faridabad. 'You are going to make me lug cartons of books,'he mumbled. Dabey Ram and I ignored his panic. 'Bahut acha idea hai ji. Ban jaegi,' Dabey Ram quietly added. And then he went on to build it without as much as discussing it with the man-in-charge!
While it was getting made, people flooded my house with books and Dabey Ram came to the rescue again! He offered space in his home for books till the library came up. It was surreal. Abhigya, the mad woman you see reading to the kids, volunteered to set it upmout if the blue. Before I could let the nervousness of hows and whats get to me, we had set it up!
Today the library at the premises is open all days for all people. You could be staying with us or not. Doesn't matter. Library is for everyone.
Initially the children used to shy away and had to be invited in to come and read. Now, they trot around as if they own the place and very confidently demand that I or any unsuspecting reader, read to them. It is blissful.
