This picture was one I cherished, but had put on the mental list of “don’t share on social media.”
It was taken when my friend and I were asked to be extras in a video that was being shot in the US Virgin Islands. When I saw this picture, I did what most women do: criticize every inch of myself. I honestly didn’t think much of it - chalked it up to a super fun experience and that I needed to do extra crunches during my next workout.
Then I re-discovered this picture today. I quickly felt how I felt then - Critical of the way my arm looked, my stomach, etc.
In this ever progressing world of “perfect” images on social media, we, especially women, often feel so pressured to always look perfect in our pictures.
Take a picture of ANY group of women, I can guarantee you that none of the ladies will agree they all like one picture. They will pick themselves apart. Look at any girls photo album on her phone - if she has posted one “selfie” I bet that she has 30 others in her phone that didn’t make the cut.
Why am I sharing this? Because I think it’s BS!
I’m always touting girl power. Self love. Empowerment. But then I fall victim to the same insecurities as we all do. Refusing to share a cool experience because I don’t like the way I look. Enough is enough.
The only way to combat the over saturated market of “perfectly angled thigh gaps and looking sexy, but not too much” is to just be REAL.
I use my page to share my thoughts and ideas, hoping to encourage others to practice self love and live a full life, while also reminding myself to do the same. I always try to be “real” - but even then, some things felt off limits.
These girls in this picture are awesome and smart and funny and have beautiful bodies. And I’m sure all my friends would say “you look amazing,” but I don’t want to share things for an ego boost - I want to share things to help empower others. So here it is: this cool pic I thought I’d never share. And I love it. #realtalk #lifestyleblogger #caribbean #usvi #travelawesome #selflove #motivation #inspiration #goaldigger #bossbabe #girlslovetravel #love #nofilter #bodypositive #throwback #blogger #girlpower @jennakutcher
