1951 Fender Nocaster - misc repairs
As we reassemble the guitar we'll be looking for any problems that should be addressed.
Nearly all of the screw holes on the body are stripped to some degree or another - including the strap button holes.😬 We'll fix all of these. And no, we won't be using toothpicks.
The jack cup on early "teles" has a knurled diameter and is press-fit into the wood. This one is coming out.. A little steam in just the right spot will swell the wood to give the cup a nice, tight fit again.
The bridge/saddle adjustment screws are getting pretty rusty and difficult to turn. We take everything apart, clean the corrosion on the threads only, and reassemble without affecting the age and patina of the parts. The little rubber "springs" for the bridge pickup adjustment screws are solid as a rock. It's a good time to change those out too.
Some years ago when the guitar was refretted, the "luthier" thought it would be a great idea to shim the old nut with a piece of cardboard - because that's really going to help with tone and sustain, right? 🤔 Even worse, in recent years someone has been using the baking soda and superglue trick to "fix" the nut slots as they've worn down. It's ok as an emergency repair, but it's not a solution. TIme for a new nut - and we'll age it appropriately so it doesn't look out of place.
Whoever plays this guitar definitely likes to do some bending 😉 These frets don't need leveling or even crowning really... we'll just smooth them out and polish so it's playing perfectly. Because... why not? It's here. It's apart. Let's get it right.
Everything removed from the guitar goes in a Ziploc and back in the case. Some of it is original to the guitar - and it's not our place to decide what gets tossed.
And a shout out to #todeogomez for crafting such awesome guitars for Fender back in the day.🤘 ..
