Whoo’s ready for another #GreatHornedOwl nest series from a couple of months ago? This one started sitting on eggs a whole month later than the previous #owl nest series I posted. Her nest was in a saguaro that is basically in a parking lot right off a sidewalk so getting close up photos was very easy. Today’s Google search: 🦉 Because their eyes are fixed in their sockets - they can't move their eyes up or down or side to side - the owl has to move its whole head to compensate.
🦉 A great horned owl's eyes are almost as big as a human's, and allow a great deal of light to pass through the pupil, allowing the owl to see in dark conditions. If a great horned owl was as large as a human, its eyes would be the size of oranges!
🦉 Owls have a wide range of "binocular" vision (seeing an object with both eyes at the same time). This means the owl can see objects in 3 dimensions (height, width, and depth).
🦉 To protect their eyes, owls are equipped with 3 eyelids. They have a normal upper and lower eyelid, the upper closing when the owl blinks, and the lower closing up when the owl is asleep. The third eyelid is called a nictitating membrane, and is a thin layer of tissue that closes diagonally across the eye, from the inside to the outside. This cleans and protects the surface of the eye.
