I realised recently I never post any photos of my own home, so I'm making an effort to do that more. A lot of designers I know are reluctant to post their own homes. As the saying goes - "the cobblers children have no shoes" 😂 We spend a lot of time and thought designing for clients, but not always for ourselves.
As an amateur potter, I love the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi, which embraces beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
My own home tends to grow very organically. This space holds items that have a lot of meaning to us - the piano itself - a free craigslist find in the next neighbourhood over when we first moved to the US, rolled home on a dolly with friends. Pottery collected and gifted to us (and a couple of my own earliest wheel thrown pieces) rocks and petrified wood from road trips, a carved wizard and redwood slabs from a roadside workshop in CA, serape blanket from our time living in AZ, handmade metal satellite from my husbands work. The poster I gifted my husband shows the flight paths of all the spacecrafts exploring our galaxy, including the #DawnMission project which was his first 'baby' and has now been adventuring for over 10 years, exploring the protoplanets Vesta and Ceres!
Here's to sharing our perfectly imperfect lives more openly in 2018.
