WHAT’S IN A NAME? .
The longer we lived in this cottage, the more curious we became of its history. I spent some time digging around in the historical society to discover all I could about its previous occupants.
Originally we believed the house was 1940’s but after accessing some old sewerage plans which were dated 1926 we then realised it was older than we thought.
I then starting sifting back through the old rate books which pre dated 1920 and it kept appearing year after year until we got to 1909. The house details matched our house exactly, weatherboard cottage, room numbers etc.
That made the house over 100 years old, we were thrilled!
This got me curious about who originally lived here, it must have experienced so much in its 100 years! After more searching, I discovered it was a Thomas Dalton, a labourer and his wife, Alice and their 4 children who lived here.
I kept searching forward year after year to see how long they stayed. Thomas Died in 1926 but Alice continued to live here. In total the Dalton Family lived here for over 50 years, so it seemed only fitting that we give them a tribute as they must have loved this little cottage a lot to have stayed so long.
I found a photo of one of their children, Mary who was born in this house.
I sure hope they would be proud of their little cottage now🖤
