Would you holiday alone?
Last January, I took a long weekend in Valletta ... solo! I suddenly had a spontaneous urge to go it alone; time out from the tot who was at that point still waking up during the nights; some quality me-time; just that desire to be away from all the trappings of everyday life.
It had been ions since I’d travelled totally alone, and I think I needed to prove to myself that I could still do it. I’d been so used to going away with the entourage of kids, husband, extended family, friends, for so long that I’d kind of forgotten what it was like to just be ME.
So I chose to go to Malta. A great January destination. The weather is usually spring-like, there’s plenty to see and do on the small island, and it’s easy to get around.
I based myself in Valletta, a gem of an historic city, and from there you can jump on a variety of local buses at the main terminus to take you around and get the most out of your island stay. This shot is taken from the harbour at Marsaxlokk, a pretty fishing village on the south coast where traditional luzzu boats leisurely bob on the waters.
And I’d go away solo again in a spark, because it gives you an immense sense of freedom. Your days can be as unplanned as you want them to be, no waiting around for others. There’s plenty of time for reflection and self-discovery, and absolutely no restrictions or restraints! You are in charge – and we all like a bit of that sometimes 😀 I’m just waiting for the next opportunity to escape!
