Kiki wasn't ever much of one for car rides. In her very young days, we actually used to board her and Bud when we would go on vacation. Unfortunately, there just wasn't anyone nearby who could watch the dogs while we were gone. Bud LOVED being boarded, but Kiki hated it. I think she probably wound up associating car rides with either the kennel or the vet. Still, after we lost Bud, I wanted to change things up a bit for her and get her to experience some new things. I was living in an apartment about a half hour away, very close to Glendora. So, I decided that to change things up for her, and to try and get her out of her depression over Bud (and my own), I would take her over to my apartment on the weekends. At first, she did not like being in the car, but after a few trips, I think she got used to it. Still, even until the end, there was always that very clear apprehension about being in the car for those first few minutes. What really got her to enjoy the car rides though was opening the windows for her. That way she could get all of the new smells along the way to my apartment. So, this is where she would usually sit, right behind the driver's seat. Usually, she would either place her head on my shoulder and watch the road, or she would hover near my head with her nose in the air, smelling whatever she could. I was still doing these car rides for her as recent as last week, taking her and the rats around the local farms with the windows down so they could catch all the livestock smells. She hadn't shown much interest, this last ride though. Even though she's gone, I will continue to do this for the rats. They still enjoy it.
