I am a recovering scale addict on day 29 of a Whole30. One of the rules is to stay off the scale for the entire program and I went into this thinking I couldn’t do it. Of all the challenges put forth this was the most difficult. No bread? No problem. No sugar, fine. No alcohol? That sucks, but okay. No scale? 😱 I have rheumatoid arthritis and had slid into bad habits that impact my disease activity so I was all in on the food restrictions- but the scale? Ridiculous, I know. I have lost so many good days to that stupid number, allowing it to define my worth. For years. Well, somehow I’ve stayed strong by focusing instead on how my clothes fit (better) and the visible changes in my body (hello smaller belly) not to mention all of the other non-scale victories I have experienced these past few weeks. As with the food freedom the Whole30 brings, this, too is freeing. I may toss the damn thing once it comes out of hiding. 🤣 We are so much more than a number. We have so many gifts. Whole30 or not, I recommend a scale detox for everyone. You are all beautiful! ❤️Thank you @melissa_hartwig For making this part of the program rules. Whole30 Day 16. I think I'm going to stop recording all of my daily eating habits. It isn't likely to change a whole lot over the next two weeks, though I'll still check in with some of the new recipes. This one is a hearty vegetable soup with hamburger, that turned out to be more like stew, haha! But it was delicious, and the perfect way to start fall today! Tiger Blood is supposed to kick in soon. Maybe it already has, I'm not sure quite what to expect. I know that I've been cleaning and cooking all afternoon and it's 7:30 and I'm still going, but I'm used to pushing myself, so it might look different for me than others. Day 16. I had my my pre-op doctors appointment today. For anyone wondering, the surgery is exploratory to see whether I have a spigelian hernia, or whether my endometriosis has spread to my bowel. I'm also being referred to another specialist to discuss the possibility of a hysterectomy. Difficult times for me to push through with this weight loss journey, but push through I must! #septemberwhole30 Day 16!! • Who even am I? I made THREE recipes (2 new to me!) in 2 days!! I posted one on my stories, but I'll post it here on my page later. On tonight's episode of "Can Laura actually follow a recipe?" we have: • Recipe #1: Whole30 Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Chicken by Bailey over at @wholekitchensink Y'all, it's pretty amazing!! I didn't have Chinese 5 spice, but looked up a swap. I settled on a little ground clove, ground cinnamon, black pepper, red pepper flakes & some freshly ground anise seed leftover from my Pork Colombo, so I threw it in the grinder. I think the taste is perfect. I also doubled it for plenty of leftovers. Thanks Bailey!!! 🤗 • Recipe #2: Paleo Cauliflower Fried Rice from Jessica over at @jays_bakingmecrazy. It's quick, easy & delicious! I did use frozen cauli rice & a cauli-sweet potato blend instead of fresh with carrots. I've made it with those before & loved it! I just ran out of time & adapted it with a shortcut. Jessica's original recipe is better. 😊 • So... I guess the answer is no. Laura still cannot follow a recipe. But dinner was great & we have lunch for tomorrow & dinner for Thursday! Day 16: tiger blood. Tiger blood is whole 30 term for being over the hump of the hard times and starting the downward slide into the finish line. Typically these days will usually be easier and cravings will be more under control. Today I had bacon and eggs for breakfast. I had salmon, spinach and cucumbers. Chia pudding for breakfast topped with some warm cinnamon apples 😍 chia pudding: 2 TBsp chia seeds, spoonful ground flaxseed, 2/3 cup unsweetened almond milk mixed SUPER well with a fork - just cover and put it in the fridge overnight. DAY 16 MEAL 3: Charcoal-grilled pork chop marinated in @thenewprimal classic marinade. Alongside some cauliflower mash with @fourthandheart Himalayan pink salt ghee (the best ghee I’ve ever had). . . I do have a dirty little secret for my cauli mash that dramatically improves the texture and flavor. For every full head of cauliflower, I add half a russet potato to the boil. Hitting the road again this week so I made this casserole for quick and easy breakfasts in my hotel. I didn’t follow a recipe, just threw in whatever I had on hand - seasoned potatoes, andouille chicken sausage, kale, and eggs. Also had a nectarine that wouldn’t be edible when I get back on Thursday so I cut that up for my #whole30day16 breakfast too. So, Facebook and their algorithms have done it again. This is from 4 years ago. They’ve provided me with a reminder that I do have that gumption to put my mind to getting fit and eating well. Whole30, Day 16! # For all those who say they could never do a Whole30 because it sounds too hard, or who don’t understand why one would WANT to cut out all those food groups, this is why! I am on day 16, my energy is up, I did two workout classes in a row on Tuesday, I’m sleeping through the night (I have insomnia), my clothes are fitting better and I woke up this morning with a clear head. This is my Tiger Blood, and I’m loving every minute of it!

You might’ve seen in my stories that I’m finally being consistent about a bedtime routine for my almost 4 year old. Thankfully, it’s been going really well! He gets to bed earlier, I get time to myself or with my husband, and I’ve been going to bed earlier, too. I’ll be honest, I’ve had to fight off a small rebellion inside myself that thinks I still have to be a night owl. But also to be honest, now in the third trimester — I’m ready for bed at like 5pm. . . . Surprisingly, the best benefit to the bedtime routine (for mom) has been that I wake up earlier. Like 6am, with the sunrise! Don’t get me wrong, I spent years getting to work well before sunrise when I worked in coffee. But waking up not because I have to, but because I actually want to - that’s new territory. All in all, I feel like I’ve ‘leveled up’ as a mom. . . . It’s been refreshing this past week or more, to bundle up and head outside. Before it gets annoyingly hot, and while things are still mostly quiet. Before the sun has completely come over the mountains, but it’s no longer dark. Usually I light some incense, remember to drink water and stretch out the sleepy cobwebs, quietly make a bulletproof coffee, and grab a book. . . . My kiddo has almost always risen between 7-7:30, so by then I’m in a good place to start our day together. Not a groggy, stop kicking me in the face, mommy hasn’t had her coffee, type of place... . . . I am all too aware of how all of this routine is going to be straight chucked out the window when we bring home our newborn. But I’m hoping that by getting a few months in first, returning to this loose schedule will just feel like returning back to ‘normal’ — or as we say in motherhood, the ‘new normal’ ✨ Soon I’ll be watching the sunrise with my baby girl, and navigating that new territory. . . . . #wholeymoleymom #wholeymoleypregnancy #whole30day16 #28weekspregnant #sahmmornings #sahmroutine #whole30tigerblood
