My grandfather passed away exactly 30 years ago today (17 November 1988). I have only one brief memory of him as I was too little when he died. I wish I knew him better. Everything I heard about him has some common points: he was working so hard in the fields; he was very intelligent, people of the village would visit him whenever they wanted to buy or sell something, or ask some calculations; he wanted all his sons to leave the village and work in the city (and he achieved that).
The second photo was taken the following winter. That is my grandmother in the photo. My grandfather built that house where she still lives today. She has been living there alone for the past 30 years.
Two years ago, I started to photograph my grandmother. It still strikes me that she is one of the very few people in my family who remained in that village. It is like an epoch approaching to an end as she is getting old.
I document her to understand them better and their life together. I want to understand how my grandfather was, what was his motivations to work, how my grandmother lived after he passed away...
I made the third photograph in March and it belongs to this project. I am returning to the village next week as well. Let's see where this project takes me. So far it has been a journey to myself. It made me discover how much I love telling stories through photographs.
