70 years ago the Universal Declaration on Human Rights was signed. It states: ✊ Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights ✊ Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security ✊ Article 14: Everyone has the right to seek asylum from persecution. ✊ We are committed to work to make sure these basic human rights are valued and respected, so that people like Anita feel safe and welcomed when leaving her country of El Salvador to pursue a better life. 📷 @oxfamamerica #HumanRightsDay #InternationalHumanRightsDay #RefugeesWelcome #HumanRights #humanitaire #derechoshumanos #oxfam #ElSalvador #hope #womensrights #portrait

Judge Ralph Strother, Possible Olympic Athlete Brock Turner, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. All white privileged men accused of rape. All got off with little to no repercussions because of their skin color and elevated status in our society. When will the benefits of being an American be offered to those at the bottom? Why do my friends worry about an arrest warrant for unpaid parking tickets, while these men don’t have to be held accountable for rape? The way our society treats these matters, you’d think they cared more about my parking tickets than my body being physically violated................ #rememberthesenames #brockturner #brettkavanaugh #ralphstrother #ralphstrothertherapist #accountability #rapists #womensrights

Did you know that on any given day around 800 million women and girls are menstruating? It's a natural function of a woman's reproductive system that happens everything single month, and no, it's not exactly pretty. It's messy and painful; it can cause you to feel irritable and can disrupt your day, but the one thing it is not, and should not be, is cause for embarrassment. This stigma around periods has serious consequences. Opening up a conversation about periods would start to break down the stigma surrounding them. So enough, is enough. Periods need to be talked about. Period.🔴

Today’s #tinytuesday is Fruits of Philosophy, written by Dr. Charles Knowlton in 1832. It is the first popular book on birth control, and the first to be published by an actual physician. Knowlton was the first to describe the various known methods of birth control and discussed the pros and cons of each method in medical terms. He particularly advocated for methods which put control over contraception in women’s hands. Knowlton was prosecuted for obscenity three times between 1832 and 1834 and served several months in jail, but he continued to revise and republish the book between 1832 and 1839. . Across the pond, Charles Bradlaugh and Annie Besant republished the pamphlet after the first British publisher destroyed the plates and his stock for fear of imprisonment. The information within it had been published before, but Besant and Bradlaugh were selling it for sixpence, meaning that everyone, including those of the working class, could afford it. 500 copies sold out in 20 minutes. Bradlaugh and Besant were arrested and charged for publishing obscenity in 1877. Both conducted their own defence, which was almost unheard of for a woman, and the court ended up ruling in their favor. . This book is a really cool example of the importance of book materiality -- it’s only a few inches tall; easy to read sneakily and conceal in a pocket or drawer. And, once Knowlton begins describing methods of birth control in detail, the already tiny type gets ~even tinier~ . #iulillylibrary #miniaturebooks #birthcontrol #womensrights #feminism #bookhistory #publishinghistory #rarebooks #specialcollections #obscenitytrials . Very appreciative of our neighbors right now for taking a risk and being transparent about their values. #kindnessiseverything ——————————— We practice a unique and perhaps, controversial form of therapy that puts our values forward. We are transparent about our social justice beliefs and work to help educate our clients on systemic issues that are impacting themselves and others and are likely working against building empathy and shared humanity. ———————————- We are not blank slate therapists. Our clients get to know us. Who we are. What and who we care about. And even some about the painful experiences that have shaped us as individuals. We believe in relationships that celebrate MUTUAL vulnerability, transparency, and risk taking. Why would that not apply in therapy?!? ———————————— We are available for therapy with individuals and intimate partnerships and have some exciting groups on the horizon. “Classifying the stars has helped materially in all studies of the structure of the universe.” - Annie Jump Cannon . . . Annie Jump Cannon (11 Dec 1863 – 13 April 1941) was an American astronomer, who was born #onthisday in 1863. Her work cataloguing stars was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification. Cannon worked with Edward C. Pickering to create the Harvard Classification Scheme - the first serious attempt to classify stars by spectral type and temperatures. . . . Along with other women in her profession, Cannon was criticised for being out of a “woman’s place”, as typically women were expected to be housewives and to not rise above assistant level. Throughout her career, Annie Jump Cannon was almost deaf. Her work was highly accurate, and with a magnifying glass she could even classify stars down to the ninth magnitude, which is around 16 times fainter than the human eye can see. Pickering admired how fast Cannon worked. He said, "Miss Cannon is the only person in the world—man or woman—who can do this work so quickly." ✨Cannon classified the most ever stars in a lifetime, manually cataloguing around 350,000 stars.✨ In 1914, Annie Jump Cannon became an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society, and in 1921, she became one of the first women to receive an honorary doctorate from a European university (in math and astronomy from Groningen University). In 1922, the International Astronomical Union passed the resolution to formally adopt Cannon's stellar classification system, and with only minor changes, it is still in use today. Clearly a very intelligent woman, Cannon was also a suffragist and a member of the National Women’s Party. ✊ . . . #historicwoman #AnnieJumpCannon #birthdaygirl #thisdayinhistory #todayinhistory #UShistory #womenshistory #herstory #astronomer #astronomy #science #scientist #womeninscience #womenscientists #womeninSTEM #STEM #hardworker #suffragist #suffrage #womensrights #stars #star #beastar #shepersisted #kickasswomen #empowering #deafawareness #inspirationalquotes #pioneer
