It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it. What started as an opportunity to photograph a cute little sea horse turned into one of frustration and sadness as the incoming tide brought with it countless pieces of trash and sewage. This sea horse drifts long with the trash day in and day out as it rides the currents that flow along the Indonesian archipelago. This photo serves as an allegory for the current and future state of our oceans. What sort of future are we creating? How can your actions shape our planet? .

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition opens at the National Museum of Scotland tomorrow! Today, however, the exhibition had a very special visitor: bald eagle Pilgrim, seen here expressing his appreciation for Klaus Nigge's striking photo 'Bold Eagle'. And very appropriately too, as today is in fact #BaldEagleAppreciationDay! . Wildlife Photographer of the Year opens at the National Museum of Scotland tomorrow, Friday 19 January, and runs until Sunday 29 April 2018. Find out more at www.nms.ac.uk/wpy . This image of an avalanche, taken in the Himalayas by #WPY53 finalist Paddy Scott, is this week’s #WPY_Winter image. At first glance this shot might look sedate and gentle, but in reality the snow and ice are travelling at hundreds of kilometres per hour. Paddy was safely across the valley when the avalanche struck, stopping him in his tracks. Dwarfed by the immense backdrop, the snow and ice seemed to tumble in slow motion, billowing across the majestic landscape. Quickly framing his shot with a jagged ridge to give depth and scale, Paddy captured the avalanche’s unstoppable force. Repost from @nhm_wpy Lakshitha was on safari in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, when he spotted an unusual sight – a lilac-breasted roller riding a zebra. Normally they prefer to perch high up in the foliage, but this roller spent an hour or more riding around and enjoying the occasional insect meal. Moose are not a strange sight in the Alaskan city of Anchorage. Around 1,500 moose are thought to be regular visitors - but despite their size, these animals are a sneaky bunch and it can be a challenge to photograph candid moments. Scalloped hammerhead sharks are generally found in the deep waters off Cocos Island, Costa Rica, where the currents are often fierce and the visibility unpredictable. It can be a tough dive with a big camera. Adriana had the advantage of a sunny day and good visibility with ample natural lighting. When a school of cottonmouth jacks came into view she waited to see if a hammerhead might appear. It didn’t take long. This particular shark stayed just long enough for her to capture a full frame with the school of cottonmouths in the background, giving her the unique composition she had been searching for. They say that fortune favours the brave. This is exactly what happened to Wildlife Photographer of the Year alumni Mateusz Piesiak, the 15-17 Years category winner back in 2013. Our #WPY_Winter image this week is of a sleepy long-eared owl taken in Lofer, Austria. Mateusz was out looking for owls one frosty winter evening when he saw a shape tucked into the branches of a spruce. As he approached, he realised that it was a long-eared owl but it was too far within the tree to photograph. The second owl he spotted was closer, but too high up so the angle was all wrong. 'I looked around and there, in exactly the right place, was a bench.' By balancing on the high back, he was able to frame the image he wanted. After 30 minutes, the clouds parted to release the last of the sun's rays. 'I got the photo you could only dream of'. “And we're all to blame, We've gone to far, from pride to shame, We're trying so hard, We're dying in vain, We're hopelessly blissful and blind to all we are, We want it all, with no sacrifice!” - and that’s just the lyrics of a punk rock song #Sum41 #wearealltoblame #Repost @bbcnews (@get_repost) ・・・ How does this make you feel? The spectacle of courting great crested grebes had long fascinated Knut Erik. Night after night he lay on a muddy bank, determined to capture their elegance. The light was exquisite, but he couldn’t get a clear shot. On his fifth and final night two birds united in clear water for a few seconds. Minutes later, the light faded. Every spring, great crested grebes perform a mesmerising ballet, bedecked in black and chestnut head-plumes. Pairs of these elegant birds rise up together out of the water, shaking their long necks. Their grace in the water is not matched on land – their legs are effective propellers but are positioned too far towards their tails for walking. Image: An elegant affair by Knut Erik Alnæs, Norway. Finalist 2017, 15–17 Years Old. Knut's image is on display in the #WPY53 exhibition at the @natural_history_museum, London. #Repost @justinhofman (@get_repost) ・・・ It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it. Our #WPY_Winter theme continues. This week we’re near the Alps in Italy with an image by #WPY53 finalist David Pattyn. Can you see the look of determination on this ibex’s face? Stately in its thick winter coat, with imposing backward-curved horns, the Alpine ibex is emblematic of Italy’s Gran Paradiso National Park. Threatened with extinction more than 100 years ago ibex have returned across Europe thanks to conservation efforts. Recent data, however, suggest numbers are going down again and we don’t yet know why. Peter had spent a long, difficult morning tracking chimpanzees through dense undergrowth. ‘Photographing in a rainforest with dim light and splashes of sunlight means your exposure settings are forever changing,’ he says. Keeping his camera at its optimum ISO setting meant a slow shutter speed, so it was hard to keep a sharp focus without a tripod. The troop of 250 chimpanzees had spent the morning high in the canopy. Totti, named after an Italian footballer, is a favourite with the rangers, but perhaps not the ladies. After trying everything to entice a female to join him on the ground – posturing, gesturing and calling seductively – he gave up and flopped onto the forest floor. Repost from @nhm_wpy Happy 2018! Here's a motivational image for #NewYearsDay. Animal Portraits finalist Jaime Culebras felt this toad had invincible attitude, ‘as if king of the Amazon’. At about 15 centimetres long the smooth-sided (or spotted) toad is one of the biggest toad species in Ecuador. It can also squirt jets of poison from the parotoid glands on its shoulders when threatened. Jamie followed the toad until it sat upright ‘still as a statue’, revealing the white spots on its belly – ‘like stars’ – and giving Jamie time to compose a portrait. Lying prone, Jaime was not only able to place the toad in its moonlit environment but to reflect its size and charismatic presence. Image: Toad with attitude by @jaime_culebras. Finishing the festive season with a visit to the Natural History Museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of The Year. Jaime was looking for snakes when he stumbled across this nightjar, its mottled feathers mimicking the truck’s colours. The next night, he set up his camera and waited for the bird to return for its post-hunt snooze. ‘I was sure it wouldn’t come,’ he explains, ‘but finally, after hours, it arrived and I was able to capture that beautiful moment.’ The cryptic plumage of these birds makes it difficult to distinguish between species and consequently, new species of nightjars are still being discovered. Their colouring is a creative camouflage and allows them to blend into leaf litter (or the mud and treads of a car tyre) while sleeping and nesting. Image: The tyre nightjar by Jaime Culebras, Spain. This is the human madness . @Regranned from @natural_history_museum - For day 3 of our #12days countdown we look back to October when Brent Stirton won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year grand title for his image of a shot and dehorned black rhino. Though difficult to look at, Museum mammal expert Richard Sabin believes it is crucial for encouraging dialogue and debate about international conservation issues. He says, 'The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition isn't just about beautiful images and technical ability - it is also about provoking and stimulating debate. This image is difficult to look at, but what it shows is an inescapable part of the human exploitation of the natural world.’ The #WPY53 judges felt Brent’s image had 'sculptural power' and strong use of light, encapsulating the breakdown of a vulnerable species in one single frame. Our #WPY_Winter theme this week takes us to Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, Canada, which is renowned for its beautiful colour. Wildlife Photographer of the Year alumni Vladimir Medvedev waited for the perfect moment after a snowstorm to capture the light. The milky turquoise-blue tint of the lake is caused by light bouncing off silt suspended in the water – glacial milk – the result of the grinding action of the glaciers that feed it. ‘In spring, the lake vanishes beneath the ice,’ Vladimir says. ‘In autumn, it snowed only twice.’ But on one of those occasions, Vladimir was able to get there in time to catch the brief lull just after one snowstorm and before the next. The light was perfect, he says, ‘with the sun setting over the horizon and on the opposite side, a new storm front approaching’. In a deserted ski resort in the Cairngorms National Park, Hugo watched as a red grouse ambled across the patchy snow, searching for food among the sparse vegetation. Waiting patiently, he took his shot just as the bird appeared in the gap between the fence posts. Red grouse are easy to spot during the Scottish winter, as unlike other grouse, they hold onto their red plumage even while snow blankets the ground. They are often protected by gamekeepers who kill the bird’s potential predators to ensure numbers are high enough for the shooting season. Image: Off piste by Hugo Wassermann, Italy. Observing this female American red fox hunting in a landscape blanketed in snow gave #WPY53 winner Ashleigh Scully the memory of a lifetime. Spotting the fox from the back seat of a car, she shot a series of the fox ‘mousing’, diving nose first into a drift. Ashleigh says 'It was funny and thrilling to see, but also very humbling to observe how hard animals like red foxes and coyotes have to work to find a meal in the harsh winter of Yellowstone.’ Many thanks to @ascullyphoto for sharing the full sequence with us, and for everyone celebrating tomorrow, we hope you're looking forward to the festivities! #WPY #WildlifePhotographerOfTheYear #Nature #NaturePhotography #Fox #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #Winter #WPY_Winter #MerryChristmas #NaturalHistoryMuseum #Snow #YellowstoneNationalPark #Foxes #AmericanRedFox
