@brianskerry captured this beautiful photograph of a turtle beginning its journey back towards the ocean for Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Leatherbacks are the largest, fastest, deepest-diving and widest-ranging sea turtles. Much of their lives are spent at sea, shrouded in mystery. • 📷: The ancient ritual, Brian Skerry, USA | #WPY53 #turtle #oceanhealth #oceans #diving #environment #conservationphotography

@justinhofman It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it. What started as an opportunity to photograph a cute little sea horse turned into one of frustration and sadness as the incoming tide brought with it countless pieces of trash and sewage. This sea horse drifts long with the trash day in and day out as it rides the currents that flow along the Indonesian archipelago. This photo serves as an allegory for the current and future state of our oceans. What sort of future are we creating? How can your actions shape our planet?
.
thanks to @eyosexpeditions for getting me there and to @nhm_wpy and @sea_legacy for getting this photo in front of as many eyes as possible. Go to @sea_legacy to see how you can make a difference. . #plastic #seahorse #wpy53 #wildlifephotography #conservation @nhm_wpy @noaadebris #switchthestick

In this image by #WPY53 grand title winner @brentstirton, Maasai Lion Guardians are tracking radio-collared lions. Traditional spearing by Maasai warriors, often in retaliation for cattle killings, is the greatest threat to the survival of lions in southern Kenya. The Lion Guardians conservation programme recruits Maasai men, many former lion‑killers, to track the lions, collect DNA samples, and produce identity cards for them. This confers a sense of ownership and pride among the men, forming a vanguard to prevent other Maasai from hunting lions. The lives of lions are now inextricably linked to those of humans. Brent’s #WPY50 portfolio highlights some of the ways in which humans regard lions and utilize them. Repost from @waterfox_ Repost from @nhm_wpy As the drought in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park stretched on, the waterholes dwindled to pools. Charlie was working in the remote Machiguenga community of Yomibato when he came across Yoina and her pet tamarin. Every day, she would go for a swim taking her tamarin with her. ‘I have no idea why,’ says Charlie. ‘The tamarin hated it and spent the whole time clambering onto her head to escape the water.’ Yoina’s tribe have inhabited the protected rainforest of Yomibato for generations and have earned the right to hunt animals (without guns) for food. The tribe consider themselves part of nature and take just enough to ensure their and the forest’s survival. When monkeys carrying young are killed, the babies are often kept as pets and later released. Image: Children of the rainforest by Charlie Hamilton James, UK / @Chamiltonjames. Finalist 2017, The Wildlife Photojournalist Award: Single Image. Recent studies have claimed that if we continue to use plastic the way we do currently, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. World governments are slowly waking up to this reality and banning single-use plastic. While this is a great step, let this powerful image by @justinhofman be a reminder that we are all part of the ecosystem. The five-metre baitball was constantly changing shape and moving. The mackerel’s defence strategy seemed to be working, as for the hour Jordi followed them, freediving, no predators attacked. As the ball sank deeper, he captured a top-down perspective, highlighting the graceful choreography that belied the simmering tension. By swimming in a tight, coordinated school, the slender mackerel confuse their predators, striped European barracudas and broader bluefish. Barracudas are skilful hunters of fish, as are the aggressive bluefish, which often attack shoals as well as hunting other animals such as squid. Image: Circle of life by Jordi Chias Pujol, Spain. Repost from @sujanluxury Repost from @nhm_wpy Lying on his stomach on the river ice, Fred was watching carefully. It was the first time he had seen an otter. It kept diving and resurfacing with frogs, and each time it went back in Fred slid closer across the ice. ‘The sound of the otter’s sharp teeth chewing through a frog as if it was a sandwich was unforgettable,’ he says. Frogs can form a significant part of an otter’s diet, especially in winter when hibernating individuals, like this moor frog, make for easy pickings. Otters will keep feeding holes open and ice-free through the cold weather – their dense, oily coats act as both insulation and waterproofing. Image: Cold catch by Fred Zacek, Estonia. Undeterred by the turbulence shaking his tiny Cessna plane, Angiolo surveyed the beautiful scene unfolding below him. The endless dunes of the Namib Desert glimmered and glowed as the last of the day’s light filtered through the clouds. Each ray illuminated a bewitching pattern, ‘like the painting of a great artist’. The Namib is one of the world’s biggest and oldest deserts – at least 55 million years old – and is largely devoid of surface water. Yet if you look closely, the smooth contours of the sand are roughened with vegetation. These plants are able to survive on groundwater and moisture from fog swept inland from the coast. Thomas Peschak's sublime #WPY53 portfolio is a beautiful escape into the remote worlds of the Seychelles. See it on backlit display at the @natural_history_museum, London, until 1 July. Visit the link in our profile for more info and tickets. His collection inspires an appreciation of the archipelago’s 115 islands and their flora and fauna – including the bohar snapper, one of the Aldabra Atoll’s top predators. Working with a group of scientists who were deploying BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) systems, Thomas had to cling to the camera’s steel cables to get this compelling split-level shot. Using one hand to take pictures, the other attempted to repel the bold and inquisitive snappers – and their incredibly sharp teeth. Couldn’t say it any better than this. We have so much more to offer, at such a low cost to the government, that would provide off-the-beaten path towns and communities income and a genuine incentive to protect their environment. 👍 - #Repost @iriekyle ・・・ Look how Jamaica sweet and has or I should say had so much wildlife and endemic animals and flora that we should of been capitalizing on yet all we do is destroy and sell out. @tourismja keeps talking about eco tourism yet they only know about big all inclusive hotels and cruise ships. Dhyey was planning to photograph vultures when he spotted this scene: black kites gathering to roost as the setting sun turned the sky a vibrant, dusky red. Inspired by last year’s competition to experiment with silhouettes, Dhyey feels this image brings together ‘the beauty of all mother nature’s elements – sun, sky and wildlife’. The carcasses of cows, camels and horses that are dumped at Jorbeer attract migratory and resident vultures, as well as black kites. Black kites are probably the most abundant birds of prey in the world. These raptors eat carrion, as well as live prey – even hovering around bush fires to pluck fleeing insects out of the air. Image: Black kites, red sunset by Dhyey Shah, India. Finalist 2017, 10 Years and Under. Paddy was safely across the valley when the avalanche struck, stopping him in his tracks. Dwarfed by the immense backdrop, the snow and ice seemed to tumble in slow motion, billowing across the majestic landscape. Quickly framing his shot with a jagged ridge to give depth and scale, Paddy captured the avalanche’s unstoppable force. Despite being smaller than its sisters, the steep faces of K6 make this mountain a formidable opponent. Conditions can change quickly with avalanches taking little more than a minute to reach the valleys below. Although Paddy’s shot may look sedate and gentle, in reality the snow and ice are travelling at hundreds of kilometres per hour. Celebrate #naturephotographyday with the best wildlife photography in the world! Wildlife Photographer of the Year is now showing at HMNS and is included with admission to the permanent exhibit halls. Photos like David Lloyd's "The Power of the Matriach" are best experienced in person. He took this photo while waiting for a herd to return to their waterhole in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve park. This female led the dozen-strong herd, and the mellow-yellow light for the rapidly setting sun helped to emphasize the textures of the elephants' trunks, mud-caked ears and tusks. #WPY53 • • • #elephant #naturephotography #naturalhistory #naturalscience #naturalsciencemuseum #elephantsofinstagram #wildlifephotography

Grilled, pickled or boiled – around two million protected birds die each year for the traditional Cypriot dish of ambelopoulia. Poachers catch the unsuspecting song birds by coating branches with a sticky glue and luring them to the trap with recorded sounds. Once stuck, the birds are left to die agonising deaths. Although the practice of bird trapping is illegal, the poachers, dealers and restaurants serving ambelopoulia are rarely brought to justice. The toll of this horrific practice continues to rise with populations of nearly 40 migratory songbird species in decline. For Bence, it is ‘one of the biggest conservation failures of our time’. Although the international trade in rhino horn was banned more than 40 years ago, horns still have a higher value on the black market than gold or cocaine. From the poorest of poachers to the richest of ranchers, this illegal trade is ultimately driven by human beliefs. Dawie Groenewald proudly breeds valuable game, including rhinos, for sale and hunting on his farm in Limpopo province, South Africa. He is a driving force behind recent efforts to legalise the trade in rhino horn, arguing that farming could supply demand without the rhinos being killed. Although the ban remains, the debate – like the poaching – continues. Image: The rhino horn farmer by @brentstirton, South Africa. Winner 2017, The Wildlife Photojournalist Award: Story.
