It’s hard to be a fan of old wrestling and not enjoy several subtly or not so subtly racist gimmicks. It’s like enjoying Tom & Jerry or Al Jolson, you just have to put good taste to one side for a little bit as long as it’s not causing a race war or truly offending anyone. I loved the Machines! The gimmick was adopted by Andre after a feud in NJPW with masked wrestler, Junji Hirata (Super Strong Machine). Andre had been “suspended” from WWF at the request of Bobby Heenan for no showing a match. Not long after, The Machine vignettes began showing on T.V. The whole point was that it was obvious who were under the masks, which just infuriated the heels! They hailed from “The Orient” and had a limited vocabulary of Japanese related words like Hyundai and Sony so it made sense to add the ever eloquent Captain Lou as their guiding light! The Machines disappeared after Heenan got Andres suspension lifted. The price? For Andre to turn on Hulk and challenge him at WM3! Jakks released a Giant Machine in Classic Superstars series 26 but it was a poor attempt. My friend had to paint long tights onto him since he was only released with the regular Andre singlet but it was an easy way to get extra Machine masks! The new Mattel Giant Machine is generally much better. I would have preferred a painted singlet but it allows for the 2 in 1 WM2 Andre figure. The mask should also have a nose hole but it’s a very minor gripe. I think it looks better MOC with the interview set background.
