Okay just one more Yellowstone pic, some canyon views from the northern portion of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, viewed from the Yellowstone River Picnic Area hike (a boring name for an awesome hike). A pronghorn friend followed me for the last stretch near Lamar Valley and I barely saw any people during this hike, always a plus when you're seeking solitude! #summerthrowback #yellowstoneriver #wanderwyoming #yellowstonetrails #yellowstoneforever #findyourpark

How could I forget my first sight of a coyote in Yellowstone National Park? It was sunset time, the warm light of the sun was enlightening a big field of grass, and I noticed something moving. From far, it looked like a fox or a wolf, but then I got close and I realize it was too small for being a wolf. It was a coyote! Probably he was looking for food since he was moving up and down checking through the grass. The coyote is typically smaller than the gray wolf, but has longer ears and a relatively larger braincase, as well as a thinner frame, face, and muzzle. The scent glands are smaller than the gray wolf's, but are the same color. Its fur color variation is much less varied than that of a wolf. The coyote also carries its tail downwards when running or walking, rather than horizontally as the wolf does. #yellowstone #yellowstonenationalpark #nationalpark #usa #nature #landscape #wildlife #travelgram #travel #wanderlust #instagood #nationalparkgeek #igersusa #wyoming #canon #photooftheday #picoftheday #igersitalia #montana #visitwyoming #visitmontana #yellowstonenps #wild #wildlife_shots #wildlifelovers #coyote #wildlife_seekers #ExploreOurEarth #YellowstoneForever #carpediem_animals

This is the alpha male of the Wapiti wolf pack. He is the first wolf I’ve ever spotted in the wilderness. While in Yellowstone last weekend I was blessed to catch him out of the corner of my eye as he emerged from the pines about 500 yards out. If he hadn’t contrasted so well on the blanket of white, I probably would have missed him. It’s a memory that I will not soon forget.

I could have stayed in this spot forever if it weren't for the biting cold. Something about water that is so calming. Something about Yellowstone when there are no crowds...peaceful.

Art is imitation. We were all excited about this totally unique shot in the Hayden Valley, then returned to see it on the hotel restaurant menu. And the Instagram of @jacobwfrank. Who wore it better? 😂

A very snowy day today in Yellowstone. Most our @nanpapix group was able to see 14+ wolves of the Wapiti pack, and a few saw an ermine. Other sightings included bald eagles, bison, and a bull elk. Our tour will continue for the next two days, government or not!

Winter in Yellowstone. We’re midway though a Yellowstone and Grand Teton Multiday! After exploring Grand Teton we spent two nights at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, exploring the south loop of the park by snowcoach. One of many highlights was this wolf and two others from the Wapiti Lake Pack! Check out our Instagram stories to see more! 📸@joshmettenphoto #myjhecotour

Bison have thrived across most of North America for over 100,000 years. Today their range has been reduced to just a few small protected areas like Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (pictured here). We restrict their instinctive desire to expand out of Yellowstone, citing disease concerns. Yet bison persist, forcing @yellowstonenps to cull herds every year. In an attempt to find other solutions, the park has established a quarantine program with hopes of transferring bison to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Earlier this week, someone, in a misguided effort to “free the bison,” took bolt cutters to fence, and the quarantined herd was cut loose, putting their return to the reservation in jeopardy. . I empathize with those who want to see wild bison again outside the parks. We should have free roaming bison on our public lands. This action does nothing to help achieve that goal. For now we must recognize that preventing the spread of disease to domestic cattle is important, and also that we can expand our wild bison herds in other, productive ways. . The tangy smell of sulphur as I step into my skis. The trail of coyote tracks, and scat. The three bison peacefully grazing, where thermally heated water keeps grasses exposed year round. The rhythmic swish of my skis as I climb, past volcanic basalt cliffs that harbor bighorn sheep and mountain lions, past waterfalls frozen in ice. The wolf tracks padding alongside me on the downhill run. These are just some of the things that make me feel alive, that reset my priorities. This is the corner of the world that gives me peace. What is yours? Yellowstone is...well, Yellowstone. But there are other places just as magical, spiritual, adventurous. Many have forgotten that these lands are held in trust for all Americans, not just those that would make a buck. But I haven't. When I ski, far away from the depressing dopamine addiction that is Facebook news, I dare to hope that wisdom will prevail. When I'm out here, I believe. That's why we share what we do, so others will learn, know, remember, and protect. #ayellowstonelife #yellowstoneforever #yellowstonepledge #experienceyellowstone #yellowstonecountry #wolftracks #backcountryskiing #keepitwild #keepitpublic #yellowstone

In need of fine relaxing moment with a view? Here's a photo, looking out from the sun room at the Lake of Yellowstone Lake Hotel. First of its kind completed in 1891, with on going up keep and renovations. Stop by for a drink or gaze upon the moment! #Findyourpark

Wolf biting the bum and dust. As the wolf had come up to the old carcass it has passed a bison, and as the bison was just sleeping, the wolf had walked up to it and tried to take a bite. The bison then jumped up and chased the wolf away. The wolf then calmly continued its way to eventually cross the road and end up at the carcass, as seen in my previous two posts. #wolf #wolves #wolfpack #canid #canislupus #yellowstone #yellowstonenps #yellowstoneforever #yellowstonepledge #yellowstonenationalpark #nikon #nikkor #wyoming #discoverwyoming #usa #carcass #bones #earthfocus #wildlife #wildlifeplanet #natgeo #natgeotravel

Terrace Springs in Yellowstone National Park. This was a relatively quiet day in the park on a chilly fall day that ended with a huge snowstorm. By the time we made it around to Old Faithful, we could barely see the eruption through the snowfall (second picture)... but the sounds alone were pretty incredible. There were only about 15 people watching with us. It was a perfect day.
