Today is Day 1 of #HolidayAsanas and we are starting off with Garland Pose, or Malasana. This is a fantastic pose to help with a tight lower back and hips. I needed some sunshine today !! Warrior Virabhadrasana I stretches the whole front side of the body while strengthening the thighs, ankles, and back. This is a powerful standing pose that develops stamina, balance, and coordination strengthens and/or builds endurance in the outer hips (gluteus medius and some of the lateral rotators), anterior thighs and outer shoulders (lateral deltoids), and stretches muscles along the inner thighs (most of the adductors). Turn to the left step your feet wide apart, about 4 to 5 feet. Turn your right foot out 90 degrees, so your toes are pointing to the top of the mat. Pivot your left foot inwards at a 45-degree angle. NOTE HEEL IS DOWN ! Align your front heel with the arch of your back foot. Keep your pelvis turned toward the front of your mat. Press your weight through your left heel. Then, exhale as you bend your right knee over your right ankle. Your shin should be perpendicular to the floor. Reach up strongly through your arms. lengthen the sides of your waist, and lift through your chest. Keep your palms and fingers active and reaching.You can keep your arms parallel, or press your palms together. If your hips are very tight, step your front foot toward the outer edge of your mat, so your heels are aligned (instead of heel-to-arch). Step your feet as wide apart as necessary. This will give you more room to square the hips as you work on gaining flexibility. If your shoulders are tight, keep your arms shoulder-distance. Big hold 30-60 seconds ! It’s Wednesday 🤸🏽‍♂️🤸🏽‍♂️🤸🏽‍♂️🤸🏽‍♂️ We’re half way through the work week and I am on Day 4 of intermittent fasting. Can I say it’s been a slightly rough transition to this new process. I’ve come to realize how much we munch and pick at food even when we’re not hungry. And I’m guilty of doing that especially at night. I’d take a few raisins or some crackers and sometimes even cereal when all I might really need is some water to calm my cravings. I also decided to start it at an extremely difficult time 🤦🏽‍♀️. The beginning of that time of the month 😩 when my hormones are raging and I want everything chocolate in sight and so far, I’ve been able to hold my cravings down and stick to my regimen. What is intermittent fasting you may ask? It’s an cycle eating pattern that cycles the body through an eating window and a fasting period. Generally the eating window is a shorter time span eg. an 8 hour window and the fasting period longer eg. 16 hour period. You should try to eat healthy/wisely in the eating window, to maximize the effects of fasting. Why fasting you might ask? Fasting can open the door to a significant reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels, weight loss, metabolic increase, cellular repair, treatment of diabetes, cancer, alzheimers and more. It’s also helped me with planning my meals and knowing my eating schedule and forming a pattern helps me stay away from unnecessary sugars and fried foods that I might have indulged in absentmindedly. Working on full extension of arms. Helps utilize the core more, however balance is a little bit off caused by the way I usually push myself into a handstand. I was just super scared in that nest. Shaking like a leaf in fact. 🍃😉 Wedged in between a couple of tree branches, on the edge of a cliff, with a massive drop down to Kelingking Beach.. I mean I love heights but not being strapped to something was too much for me. My natural instinct was to stay down low and you know.. throw yo hands up in the air like ya just don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️ in reality though, I was probably carrying on like a big baby. Eventually, Andrew (sick of waiting) convinced me to get up and do a tree pose, seeing as I had held up our hike to climb up there in the first place. Happy Wednesday! 👋🏼 How has your week been so far? What have you been up to? Today was day 2 of co teaching with @fit4momsantaclarita for me, and it was a BEAUTIFUL experience. I’m not the best when it comes to speaking to large groups of people, but I can feel my confidence growing just 2 classes in! If you know me well, you know how this incredible community of mothers has impacted my life in the best way. Becoming part of the Santa Clarita team is filling my heart, and building classes is allowing my creativity to run wild. T R U S T T H E Y O G A - It’s time I dove back into my personal practice. - I taught 9 classes last week, which is a new personal record! I normally teach 6 which my body & mind have gotten used to since I feel I haven’t been teaching long. But recently I’ve been a little tight. Especially in my hips. Holding Warrior II made me cringe but I had to power through it. I’ve noticed I’m unfocused on my own body when I’m not teaching. At times we loose ourselves in all the chaos. I love sharing yoga and this beautiful practice is always humbling. But it’s important to remember we also have to give to ourselves. Give love and time, and patience. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I get to sub or even teach at all. A few years ago I never even thought I’d step on a mat in a room full of people and feel confident enough to guide them. It was a constant fear of loosing momentum and standing still. - After subbing a class this afternoon & hearing from these beautiful souls I connect with that they love my teaching, it warms my heart. And let’s me know I’m on the right path.
