WHAT IS SPIRIT?
I don’t know. 🤷🏽♂️ There are a lot of definitions of the word spirit. Depending on our indoctrination into this world - spirit could mean a lot of things due to its influence on us, usage, and application in our lives. To be honest, I don’t know which one is right and I can’t tell anyone which one is right either. I can offer thoughts up about it - but that is about it. Spirit for those that believe in the idea and concepts surrounding it is personal - like many things. Personally - I feel spirit all around me - for me it is simply a name that is given to something that is so incredibly vast, abstract, cathartic, life giving, life taking, and undefined. It’s a name that has been given to something that connects all of us. We almost diminish it by naming it. It’s nice to just be with it and experience what we may think or feel it is.
Words have a way of changing throughout history and time - so I thought I might take a few moments to look up what the word Spirit means and where it is derived from. It turns out the word spirit is a Latin word derived from the word “Spirare” which means “to breathe.” This made me smile. The word “spiritus” came later on which came to mean: “soul, spirit, courage, and vigor.” While I am sure there is more back history to the word spirit - we are limited by what has been researched and shared and also because war throughout time has destroyed history/records.
If I took anything away from it - spirit simply means to breathe. The breath - is life. Life is always breathing around us. The breath is perhaps god, the breath is you, it’s me, it’s our ancestors, and it is all of those that will come after us. To be with spirit for me is to simply breathe. The word may change and evolve again in the future - but in this moment for me - the breathe is what gives me spirit, soul, courage, and vigor.
It’s great to look words up and uncover their roots - especially ones that we use often. We may connect to them differently and live more vibrantly through them.
