20 years ago on this day, a show on the then relatively unknown network known as The WB entered our lives. Millions of outcasts were suddenly immersed in something beyond comparison. Something...different yet welcoming. But In actuality this was a show that almost anyone alive (or undead) could relate to. The concept of life as a literal HELL was masked in metaphors and it was executed wonderfully by a brilliant cast of actors and an even more brilliant assembly of writers. Buffy The Vampire Slayer transcended all expectations. It garnered a cult following that still stands the test of time to this very day. To anyone who was actually PAYING ATTENTION, to anyone who saw through the silly title, this show was not just about vampires, demons and the horrors of high school. It was in fact a metaphor for life itself. The incomparable Joss whedon created a cultural icon in Buffy. She was a slayer in every sense of the word. Slaying hearts and stereotypes simultaneously. But a hero is only as strong as the team surrounding them. Thus the Scooby gang was born. And the greatest metaphor of all was displayed: Friendship is truly more important and stronger than any force on earth. No one should face their demons alone. There is everlasting unity in diversity and there is only one thing on this earth more powerful than evil, and that's us. This show taught me a lesson that I will never forget: The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.
Be brave. LIVE.
