So while you are in Shanghai, be prepared to be gawked at, photographed, openly pointed at and sometimes laughed at. 🤣 Whether it's the metro where local men will unabashedly stare at you (for as long as your journey lasts) or a touristy place like the Bund where photographers with heavy lenses try to capture your distinct features, it doesn't stop. The older generation will make you think you have offended them because of their stern look while they point at you, men will come up to you to click selfies with them and children just let out a giggle that will make you turn on your front camera and check your face for something odd. But there will also be those who just walk up to you and make you smile with their earnest compliments. I know people who get bothered by it all. But don't. Instead, if you have someone walk up to you, engage. Ask questions. Ask them what they found so fascinating about you and usually it won't be a creepy thing like you are used to assuming. It will probably be because of the shape of your nose, or your blonde hair or the color of your skin or just the clothes you wear, your language, your behaviour. They want to know where you are from because of your distinct features. I am an Indian and it is kind of apparent when one looks at me. But, some of the people I interacted with thought I was Mexican or Spanish🤣 So communicate! Learn about them and let them learn about you! Surprise them and I'm sure they will leave you surprised too!
