Anyone here a horror fan? I'm not usually a big fan of horror books, but I picked this one up on a whim because I was intrigued by the premise. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, The Girl With All The Gifts by M R Carey is about Melanie, who spends her days locked in a cell before being transported at gunpoint to a classroom in which she and several other children like her are strapped to their chairs. Melanie loves class, and tries her best, but can’t understand why the adults keep looking at her like she’s going to bite. •
I can’t say too much about what happens without giving it away, but suffice to say that this is not a traditional zombie book (not that I’ve read that many of those). The story centres around a group of survivors who are trying to escape various hazards – everything from zombie gangs to mad scientists and crazy government officials. The tone is almost philosophical, and asks the question: what does it mean to be human? What makes us “feral”? How do we really determine what is right and what is wrong? There is plenty of action in this one, and the fast pace kept me hooked right until the very end. The zombie aspect is creepy, chilling and at times downright terrifying. Melanie’s character in particular was haunting and thought provoking, and has stayed with me long after I finished reading this book. I really, really enjoyed this one and would recommend even if you don’t usually like this genre 🌱
Has anyone read this book? What did you think? For those of you who are horror fans, how does it stack up against your faves in this genre?
