Life has so many little things that can float around our heads. Beautiful, colorful things that are awesome little gifts we get to experience in life! But if we keep our eyes fixed on them - a career, relationships, talents, you name it - we start to define ourselves by them. Living and dying by having a successful job or not, having a family or not... when we gain and eventually lose those things, we suffer so much loss when our sense of identity is wrapped up in them.
But when we surrender those things and keep our eyes fixed on what lasts beyond them, we gain the ability to enjoy them freely! It's a fun little irony. But it comes with so much relief and joy as you stroll down the path of life 😊
Leaves of three?
We did not see 😬
The summer heat's finally on its way! Are you ready for it?
No big novel today, just a reminder to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. When we focus entirely on the darkness we're facing, it can consume our entire vision. But when we turn from that darkness and see crazy, limitless light, the dark spots don't look so big and bad anymore ☀️
I think pictures of people will always carry the most story and the most appeal for me, but once in a while it's nice to just walk and find a story around you. Like a rusty red river, a rusty red boat, and a rusty red sun in the windows.
It's a bed of flowers 🥁 ✨
It's a neighborly day in this beautywood
A lot of people want to get to heaven, but how many people are wanting heaven to get inside them?
Next post will be a goofy one, I promise. But today I want to ask myself, and ask you: how many times have you looked in the mirror and saw something that God doesn't see? Moving forward through life, but driving while looking in the rearview mirror?
It's one thing to recognize something you wish you never did - whether that's an old battle, or something you said a minute ago you wish you hadn't. But what happens when you turn that into a patch job - when you then have to DO stuff to believe you're okay, versus BELIEVE stuff so that you can actually be?
Jesus paid a price for us to be something. If we realize who we are in Him, your doing is gonna flow naturally out of who you are. There's nothing you'll get out of people appreciating you. Nothing you'll get out of a mental checklist of good deeds for the day. Nothing you'll get out of good/bad feelings that shift all the time. If you don't know who you are, you'll gain who you are through so many countless things we put our worth in. But when you DO know who you are, it's so simple! "Christ accepted you ... in accordance with His pleasure and will ... to those who believed in His name ... that we should no longer be slaves to sin -- God's special possession ... children of God ... one with Him in spirit" - mishmashed Bible verses 😄
Where Darkness Meets The Light .
Man, what would it be like to have no skeletons in your closet? No hidden junk in your basement that you'd be ashamed to bring out into the light?
That's the life I want to live and press on with. Being unashamed of the past and of weaknesses, that they only serve to show how awesome and transformational living in the Light can be. Being honest about something that I was, as a testimony to what I've been made into.
It's nothing I have to un-learn. Nothing I have to rework. Just owning the past and living on in new, absolute joy that old battles have no power today. They could pop up again, sure. Do I have the strength to face them now? Nah - I never did. Not on my own. But the Ghosts of Jacob's Past, Present, and Future can't lift a finger to a Ghost that's Holy, am I right? 😂
Never got around to posting this before, but now is better than never! Gotta admire the detail @blasted_ellipses puts into her fits when a meetup comes around!
Bring it all to peace
Can't wait to share more of Bethany with you all. I get so much more out of our shoots than just pictures worth posting - I get challenged creatively, wonderful conversation, and a friend to walk with! She's super expressive in our shoots and has an awesome array of emotions, but I think this one captures the Bethany I get to see off-camera best 🙂
I was talking with some friends the other day about how pictures can tell a story. When I post on here, I don't only want to share my story - things I happened by, people I've met - but others' stories too. Sometimes our stories intertwine for a moment, and I'm blessed to be able to capture a lot of those moments. Powerful emotion, and peace. Fun and creativity. Or even just something out of the ordinary. And believe me, I have SO much fun stuff that I'm incredibly behind on posting! Glad you're all along for the ride 😄
More stuff coming from the film meetup! Thanks downtown Milwaukee for all your cool framing possibilities 🙏
Learning a lot about the gift of friendship and family lately. Who I am isn't defined by either, but both allow opportunities for growth and experience in unique and amazing ways. Letting my family know I love them, and spending time in real, heartfelt conversation is a great chance to be love. Investing in friends and walking with them, even if only for a short time in the grand scheme of things, is a great way to be love.
I've overlooked so much of this, but a maple tree is still a maple tree, even when it's just a sapling. I won't condemn myself for not seeing these things earlier, rather, I'll pull back those clouds in joy and be thankful for the sun, water, trials, and ALL the gifts I have in life that are like miracle grow for the sapling that is me ☀️🌴
Let's kick off some more posts shot with film, shall we?
