Casa de les Punxes built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for the Terradas Brutau family in the 20th century. Resembling a medieval castle with towers and conical spikes, this structure was made up of three separate homes built for three sisters who inherited their father's fortune along with their brother who managed the construction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . . . Sgraffito restoration work. Originating from the Italian word graffiare "to Scratch", this style of wall decoration was popular throughout Europe during the Renaissance. Layers of plaster in different pigment are applied before skilled craftsmen apply the design while wet scratching away the superficial layers below to reveal the ground pigments giving the design depth and a sculptured appeal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo by Kirk Fisher. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #barcelonacity #exploretheworldwithus #architecture_hunter #topbarcelonaphoto #amazingarchitecture #architecturephotos #barcelonainspira #facades #art_chitecture #catalunya_arquitectura #designoftheday #homedesignideas #barcelonista #surfacedesign #gothicquarter #sgraffito #ig_barcelona #exteriors #cityscene #lookingup_architecture #barcelonagram #ig_catalunya #exterior_design #stonework #citystreets #visualarts #clayart #walldecoration #plasterwork #craftmanship

Unlike most of Gaudi's curved work and the elaborate ornamentation of the Nativity facade, the Passion facade of the Sagrada Familia is very linear and minimalistic, referencing the sobering end of life and suffering of Jesus. This sculpture work on the Passion side was completed in 1990 based on Gaudi's notes and sketches. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo by Elena Cagianelli. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #barcelonacity #barcelonaart #culturetrip #exploretheworldwithus #visitbarcelona #barcelonagram #barcelona_cat #barcelona_world #architecture_hunter #architecturelover #gaudiarchitecture #topbarcelonaphoto #stayandwander #unescoworldheritage #amazingarchitecture #architecturephotos #barcelonainspira #geometricdesign #structures #naturalism #bcnlovers #stonework #churches #temples #churchesoftheworld #basilica #architecture_best #architecture_view #sagrada #masterpieces

Casa de la Seda in the Ribera district of Barcelona housed the silk sailmakers guild in the 18th century and is known for its beautiful sgraffito exterior. Originating from the Italian word graffiare "to scratch", this style of wall decoration was popular throughout Europe during the Renaissance. Layers of plaster in different pigments where applied before skilled craftsman applied the design while wet scratching away the superficial layers below to reveal the ground pigments giving the design depth and a sculptured appeal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #barcelonacity #exploretheworldwithus #architecture_hunter #topbarcelonaphoto #amazingarchitecture #architecturephotos #barcelonainspira #facades #art_chitecture #catalunya_arquitectura #designoftheday #homedesignideas #barcelonista #surfacedesign #gothicquarter #sgraffito #ig_barcelona #exteriors #cityscene #lookingup_architecture #barcelonagram #ig_catalunya #exterior_design #stonework #citystreets #visualarts #clayart #walldecoration #plasterwork #craftmanship

One of the two original Wallace fountains found in Barcelona. Sculpted of cast iron in 1872 by Charles A Lebourg, 12 public water fountains were donated to Barcelona prior to the 1888 World's Fair by English philanthropist, Sir Richard Wallace. Each fountain includes four human shaped columns (known as a Caryatid) dressed in elaborate tunics holding a dome above their heads with four fish. Lebourg individualized the caryatids with a slight difference in their dress or posture as these four were intended to represent different virtues; including, kindness, simplicity, charity, and sobriety. Sobriety being an issue at this time as alcohol was less expensive than clean water. These public fountains allowed everyone access to clean drinking water. The Wallace Fountain can be found in abundance in Paris and London and throughout the world. The two remaining sculptures in Barcelona can be found where Gran Via meets Passeig de Gracia and the other on La Rambla at the wax museum. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #barcelonacity #barcelonaart #culturetrip #exploretheworldwithus #barcelonalife #barcelona_world #architecture_hunter #topbarcelonaphoto #amazingarchitecture #architecturephotos #historyfacts #barcelonagram #barcelonainspira #architecturephoto #architecturaldetails #wallacefountain #cleanwater #19thcentury #urbanplanning #monuments #waterfountain #caryatids #castiron #cariatides #fountains #philanthropist #philanthropy #cityscene #cleanwaterforall #landmarks
