Honesty time: Lately I've been giving myself a hard time about doing things the "travellers way" meaning that I shouldn't be opting to do tours and instead going out and doing things on my own. Tours are seen as the touristy way, the easy way, and sometimes I feel like I'm cheating myself doing them.
It's all this pressure I put on myself to be the best traveller I can be but the truth is that TOURS ARE OKAY TO DO!
Sure they cost more money but they do make things easier and I do learn a lot more from them than I do on my own. See that mountain? It is a folk story behind it or this road? It's been rebuilt 3 times because of roads, stuff like that. I like to know the fun facts and I don't always share them with you guys because you still need to learn stuff when you come to these places too!
Another reason why I've been doing more tours lately is because I haven't been connecting with as many people in hostels so it's another way to make friends (and I've met awesome people lately doing them including a girl who steers cruise boats and a girl who runs G Adventures tours! (dream job right?)). Another reason, I don't feel totally comfortable getting to many spots in the Balkans on my own because it requires me to rent a car and navigate by myself which some people are totally okay doing but I choose not to (I'm all about gazing longingly out the window). So while you guys may or may not agree to go on tours or if you ever push yourself to not them like I often think then I'm here to tell you that you can travel how ever the hell you want. Tourist or traveller? Who really gives a shit as long as you're enjoying yourself, not damaging nature or the places you visit and you're learning. Some things that have a price tag are really priceless and I can say that some tours were the best days of travel on this trip thus far.
