--+Do you carefully curate what people in your life know about you?  How so? - "His light eyes gleamed as he inquired, 'Why do I get the feeling I’ll never know more about you than you want me to?' - She smiled and countered, 'Because it’s true.'" - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Do you ever think back to words spoken by a loved one and see them differently?  Tell us about it in the comments. - "Like lightning to rod, her thoughts flashed back to where she’d seen the phrase before. She immediately reached toward a small stack of books by her bed and began sorting through it until she located a worn red book of her mother’s that was filled with Cherokee poems and stories. - She opened the book to the inside cover where her mother had handwritten an inscription: - Zoë: Do as did Pandora, save don’t leave hope inside. In bocca al lupo. - Mother" - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Has a person close to you ever silently feared for you?  Tell us about it in the comments. - "As Lula walked her into the bathroom she could see that Lula was alarmed, but it wasn’t until she looked at herself in the mirror that she understood why, seeing as there were bits of moss and leaves threaded throughout her hair. She didn’t look at Lula and instead, disrobed then pushed the shower curtain aside. Without a word Lula left the bathroom and shut the door. - Stepping into the shower, she let the water rain down on her as dirt and forest debris fell onto the porcelain below. Her gaze drifted to a tiny leaf floating toward the drain, which she swore was twisting and moving in objection to being washed away. - She washed her hair, soaped off a last few bits of dirt then turned off the water and stepped out of the shower. Grabbing a fresh towel, she submerged herself into its clean cottony comfort and dried off. Without the energy to dress, she turned out the light, left her bathroom then dropped her towel and crawled into bed. - Body clean, mind numb, she retreated under silken covers, closed her eyes and hoped that she and Lula would never speak of what had happened that night." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

—+Has a moment in the present ever brought you back to a time in your past? Tell us about it. - "She ducked under the scaffold and saw a small dark-haired girl swirling her finger in a slushy puddle. The girl’s mother was next to her and busily fumbling through her purse as the little girl looked at Zoë. As if a being sucked into a vignetted flashback, she was the little girl’s age and a younger version of her own voice rang in her ears, 'Mom, why does it rain?' - 'To cleanse our shadows.'” - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

—+Have you ever accurately perceived a person’s circumstances even though you'd just met? Tell us about it. - "Patiently, he waited for her to continue. In observing her attempt to describe her role, he understood how crucial it was for her to have one. She needed to be defined and she demanded things around her be as well, all a telltale sign that her safety had at one point been in question. On some level, she had been betrayed, robbed of a childhood, tricked by fate; at least, that was his instinct." - ~Dr. Lawson, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

—+Do the words of your parents--good or bad--ever haunt you? Tell us about it. - "Focusing on the street, she kept walking and let light from the moon surround her like an old friend. She recalled her mother saying that the moon cleanses the soul and beneath its incandescent light, Zoë would often find her mother praying to Great Spirit, 'Watch over my little dragon. Keep her spirit strong and her heart pure.' - Zoë twisted the bracelet on her wrist then ran her thumb over the small stone at its center while examining the flood of moonlight shining down and bathing the street’s leafless trees in radiant light. 'I’m strong Mother, but my heart is not pure.'" - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

—+Has something from a dream ever appeared in your waking world?  Tell us about it in the comments! - "Standing carefully on her heels, she eased weight onto her stained feet then walked toward the bathroom, and after taking just a few steps, she noticed the missing brass key lying on her bedside table. Picking it up, she unwound a piece of ivy from around the key’s handle while a disjointed film replayed in her mind: the forest, the dead otters, the smoky demon, all still part of her like shadows. - In an attempt to disarm the images reaching out from her dreams, she closed her eyes and whispered, 'Breathe, Zoë. Just breathe.'” - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Has someone you thought you knew well ever confused or shocked you? Tell us what happened! - "Lula sat in the dimly lit dining room and sipped a glass of her favorite scotch, feeling heavy-hearted and restless. Her loyalty to Mr. Black was unshakeable but his request that she not interfere in Zoë’s current plight was proving to be the most difficult thing he'd ever asked her to do. - It wasn't like him to be intentionally cryptic and despite the sincerity of his letter, she couldn’t understand why his last words had given her so little information to go on. How was she supposed to trust instructions centered solely upon 'In all chaos some order exists,' which to her was a truly careless way to let things unfold." - ~Lula Jade, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Have you ever had a metaphor from a dream change something in your waking life?  Tell us about it! - "The damage to the structure is monumental. The stained-glass ceiling is obliterated, the wall closest to me blown wide open and the gates within the walls of the cathedral, twisted piles of iron. In seeing the cathedral’s grandeur reduced to wreckage, I feel my heart grow heavy inside the confines of my chest. It occurs to me that the structure is a metaphor aligned with my father’s memory, therefore, it makes a crude sort of sense that its stone is now rubble, just as his bones are dust." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Have you ever felt like you'd never find peace?  Tell us about it. - He stared at the floor like the heavy wooden planks beneath his feet were keeping him separate from the ache threatening to unearth itself. 'There are times I think I’ll never find peace.' - His words were resonating inside her so strongly, she felt like her guts were winding in on themselves. 'I believe you will.' - He raised his head and looked at her. 'Maybe. Or, perhaps I’ll learn to live without it.' - ~Bill St. James, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Have you ever felt like an outsider in your own life? Tell us about it! - "But then again, that is who I am: an outsider. These mirrorball talking heads who speak their truths from inside my own mind, some turning vicious while laying their grievances before me like dead animals on an altar, are after all, correct in their assessment. I have always been on the outskirts and skimming along the edge of societal normalcy like a tightrope walker. Terrified that I may fall yet, intoxicated by the risk of taking one more step along a rope that may slip out from beneath my feet at any moment." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

3

--+Has someone you met ever had a paralyzing effect on you, whether in a dream or in real life?  Tell us what about it! - "I hear him walking toward me, the scent of pre-rain growing more intense by the second, but I can’t seem to turn around. Being no stranger to the presence of a man, I find my reaction to him unnerving and foreign. - Now standing behind me, his breath is falling on my neck and in response, my skin raises and forms tiny bumps. Feeling his hand come to rest on my shoulder, I glance right and see that beneath the silvery moonlight his skin is ghostly white as though made of porcelain: he is light in the flesh." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

1

--+Have you ever looked around and questioned your reality?  Tell us about it. - "She felt a sharp chill in her bones like a brutal jab from winter’s knife, and after reaching the street corner, she was just about to hail a cab when she realized the street was devoid of traffic. Looking around, she found it odd that there wasn’t a soul in sight on what was usually a bustling and heavily traveled street; it was almost as though the entire neighborhood was no more than a painting frozen in time." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

--+Have you ever taken your deepest, darkest feelings out on someone else?  Tell us what you did in the comments below. - "The cruelty he craved from her had been turned inward and he found himself wanting to play her role instead. Jerking the laces outward again, he watched the muscles in her neck and back become rigid as she tried to take in the slightest bit of air. - But he couldn’t let her breathe, he wanted her to feel the pain of being alive but unable to suck in the life-giving oxygen around her. Maybe then, if just in metaphor, she’d understand the cruel and weighted inequity of the circumstances he’d been forced to live with every day." - ~Lucas Mann, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

4

--+Have you ever felt perfectly in tune with someone?  Tell us about them in the comments. - "Once there, she laid him down then positioned herself in front of him. Feeling his arm wrap around her waist, she melted into him and let the softness of his breath fall onto the back of her neck. Intertwining her fingers with his, she closed her eyes and swore that his heart was beating inside her own chest. - Tick, tock, tick, tock..." - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

7

--+Have you ever feared for someone you care for deeply?  Tell us about it in the comments below. - “'I know how much Zoë means to you-' Placing the envelope in her purse, Gigi continued, 'Just promise me you’ll keep your distance.' - Steel tears sat behind Lula’s eyes like rusty ball bearings. 'You think she’s in danger?' - Gigi leaned forward and placed her hand on top of Lula’s as she spoke, 'I'm certain.'" - ~Lula Jade, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

4

--+Have you ever let yourself participate in a lucid dream? Tell us about it. - "A gentle smile graced his lips as he spoke, 'I’d like to encourage you to let your dreams happen, participate and immerse yourself. Exploration in, and of, dreams is the only way of crossing into your unconscious.'” - ~Dr. Lawson, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles

3

--Have you ever felt your dark side battling against your light side? Tell us which side won! - "A blast of arctic wind whipped down the street and froze her thoughts mid-stream. She stiffened against the cold while like an icy knife, her mother’s voice pierced her thoughts, 'There are two wolves within us all, the black and the white. The wolf you choose to feed...is the one who wins.' - 'Then I will starve them both.'" - ~Zoë Hall, Velvet Moon Chronicles #VelvetMoonChronicles
