#SeptemberWhole30, Day Thirteen: Sweet dreams are made of cheese ... and Twinkies, ice cream and fast-food french fries. Wait, what?⠀ —⠀ If you've been chowing down on non-compliant foods in your dreams during your #SeptemberWhole30, you're not alone. This is a common occurrence among Whole30'ers.⠀ —⠀ Why does this happen? Our best guess is that it's your brain's last-ditch effort to drive you back to the foods that you used to comfort and reward yourself with. Because your relationship with food is deeply rooted and strongly reinforced throughout your life, changing them can be a difficult process with surprising effects.⠀ —⠀ There's not much to do about these dreams other than entertain each other with them so... please, tell us. Days Ten and Eleven of the #Whole30 are known as "The Hardest Days." Statistically, if you’re going to ditch out on your #SeptemberWhole30, you’ll do it today or tomorrow. Click the link in our profile to read an article from @melissa_hartwig about WHY this might be the case (hint … it includes the amazing term “extinction burst”).⠀ —⠀ By this point, the novelty of the program has worn off, and you've already experienced most of the unpleasant physical effects. But, you've yet to really see any of that "Whole30 magic." Come on! Is this worth it?⠀ —⠀ Everywhere you turn, there's a chance to ditch out on your #SeptemberWhole30. Bagels in the breakroom. Brownies you baked for your kiddo's classroom party. Oh look, an old friend just texted to see if you want to grab a drink this evening. You are impatient, you are so over it, you are an adult human who is allowed to eat the darn brownie if you want to eat the darn brownie!⠀ —⠀ It's true. You're absolutely right. At any moment, you have the choice to eat that brownie and end your Whole30. But we really, really hope you choose not to, because of what's actually happening in your brain on days 10 and 11. You are starting to experience the psychological power of your food choices and habits.⠀ —⠀ You are learning not to use food as reward. You are learning that food can not give you true emotional relief and support. You are creating new habits and strategies for dealing with stress, pain, loneliness, boredom, rejection, and more. You are realizing that you can be happy without your favorite fill-in-the-blank (diet soda, after-dinner ice cream, nightly glass of red wine).⠀ —⠀ These days are hard, but YOU CAN DO THIS. Do you believe you can? We believe you can. In fact, we know you can, because literally hundreds of thousands of people just like you have done it before.⠀ —⠀ Here's the good news. Get through these next two days, and things will get much better. In the meantime, try to find non-food ways to to treat yourself. Go get a manicure, order that new kitchen gadget you've been eyeing, ask your best friend for a bear hug. Stick with us, because the best is yet to come. http://whole30.com/2016/03/day-ten-tantrums
